About the property

Sleeps 12 comfortably in 6 king/twin bedrooms, 4 en suites & 2 further bathrooms

An idyllic country house overlooking the magnificent Luberon, yet close to historic cities and villages such as Aix, Avignon, St Remy and Cassis.

On an exclusive private corner of the prestigious Golf de Pont Royal, tennis, horse riding, golf and many other activities are readily available. The main house comprises 4 public rooms, 2 king and 3 twin bedrooms, 2 further bathrooms and an exquisite kitchen. The independent pool house contains a further en suite twin bedroom and pool kitchen.

The large 33x17ft pool enjoys a sunny position with natural stone walling, a fountain and a delightful garden setting. The villa has many furnished terrace areas and a first floor balcony. One of only ten large magnificent residences in a secluded corner of the domaine, the open views are stunning.

A traditional stone barbeque, an outside dining room, and a huge garage/games room sit amid fully landscaped grounds. High quality local materials of oak, marble, ceramics and forged iron create a special ambiance

The Inside Story ‘from the Beginning’:

Designed by award winning local architects and created by skilled local tradesmen, Le Chardon d'or (the Golden Thistle) is the perfect holiday venue.

Natural stone floor tiling, local ceramics, Italian marble, timber detailing, and forged ironwork, combined with air-con, power showers, underfloor heating, lavish kitchens, and delightful bathrooms to create the perfect combination of old charm and today's exacting standards.

On the lower ground floor, the poolside lounge houses the wide screen TV, DVD, PlayStation and library of games and films. Turret stairs lead to a fine hall overlooking the sunken salon and dining room separated by a central cheminee, furnished in leather and oak, but most importantly with incredible open views to the Luberon.

The locally crafted kitchen benefits from a full range of Bosch appliances, including the ice and water dispensing American fridge. An en suite king bedroom sharing the views, and boasting a triple-headed shower and WC completes the story so far.

The Inside Story 'Part II':

...following the circular stairway upwards brings you to the turret en suite twin bedroom, looking to the dramatic Vernegues.

A few steps more and you reach the level containing 2 further twin bedrooms looking out to the Luberon, a working study with doors to the balcony, the full family bathroom, and the magnificent master suite with windows on three sides, including glazed doors to the spectacular fully furnished balcony.

All bathrooms have extensive tiling, and heated towel rails. All bedrooms have fine local furnishings, fully fitted wardrobes, crisp bed linen, duvets and deep pillows to create great sleeping environments!

On The Outside:

On the 1/2 acre landscaped site entered through imposing iron gates, with an intercom facility to the house for your guests, you will find a generous driveway with parking for 4/6 cars. The large garage has been designed as a games room with ping-pong, 8-ball American pool etc.

The garden has fabulous views to all sides, but none more so than the area housing the fully furnished dining terrace and craftsman-built stone BBQ. The house is surrounded by terraces; some covered, others open with comfortable exterior furniture.

The pool house has an independent en suite twin bedroom with TV and kitchen facilities. The 33x17ft pool has an electric safety cover and is surrounded by natural stone paving, grassed areas with olive trees and a feature dry-stone wall complete with water fountain. The pool can be heated out of season.

There are sun loungers, and ample furnishing to relax and enjoy this secluded and sunny spot. In essence it’s your choice between cool shady corners or the Provencal sun.

Guestbook comments from the owner

WOW - What a fabulous villa. We visited with three generations of family, ranging from 4 to 74yrs, and the house worked perfectly for every one of us. The villa has an abundance of space, beautifully decorated, with a fully stocked kitchen.

We loved all the different seating areas - watching the stunning sunset over the Luberon from the decked seating was so special. The kids loved the pool, and were rarely out of it!! When they were, they would enjoy the ping pong and pool in the shade. The golf was a huge hit with the Dads, who took advantage of the onsite discounts to play a few great rounds on a brilliant course.

Gorgeous area to stay, with an array of fab markets to visit, plus a visit to Les Baux is a must. Our children's' favourite trip was to Zoo de Barben!

We have found our little peace of heaven in Provence here, hence the reason we have now visited two years in a row!! Will be difficult to not book this beautiful place every year. Thank you so much Andrew for making the booking process from start to finish an enjoyable one, nothing ever too much trouble.

Winter at le Chardon D'or is just as good as in the summer

  • 5 of 5

Days around the pool are replaced by brisk walks around the domain and in the nearby villages. The daytime temperatures were in the mid teens but with the underfloor heating and log fires in the evening, time was spent reading or watching many of the DVD options or satellite channels.

Lunch at both Mas du Capoun in Molleges and La Salle a Manger in Salon were as usual excellent choices.

Golf was still available to play until late afternoon, and the course is already being prepared for a Challenge Tour event in September 2018 when visitors can enjoy this and the Ryder Cup in Paris National.

We hope to be back at tis time of the year again.

Owner's Response: Yes, I completely agree on the villa being a super winter retreat, the roaring fire and a glass of Gigondas goes particularly well! Glad your weather was so good, with 300 plus days of sunshine each year there is always a high likelihood of being able to walk or golf in good conditions. I look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Fantastic weeks break in luxurious house and surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We loved every minute of our weeks holiday at Le Chardon d'Or. The location of the house allowed us to enjoy visiting many stunning villages in the area.

We also enjoyed afternoons in the pool (in the middle of October), BBQ's and time relaxing around the gardens many view of the luberon hills.

Overall the best accommodation, surroundings and golf we have every visited.

Owner's Response: Great to have such positive feedback, off-season proving increasingly popular - must be the roaring log fire! Though understand some days were 20c - excellent for November.

From initial enquiry to reluctant departure this holiday was wonderful.

The house suited us perfectly-a family group of 12 aged from nearly 2-60.The villa itself is very spacious and well laid out.We could easily all be together and just as easily find quiet places to take off to for reading etc.

The pool and surrounds are lovely.Being there at the end of October,we had some very windy days but the sheltered sun trap near the pool made it possible for us to spend ages in the pool every day.In fact,we hardly left the house and its superb facilities. It suited us to not go far only occasionally wandering up to canoe on the little lake, play(ridiculously expensive!)mini golf and give the little ones time to play on the park and look at the animals in the little farm.

A car is needed as the nearest village for shops etc.is not walkable. However,we found all we needed inMallemort(5mins by car).A little wander up to the Table d’Orientation is worth it for the superb views.

The surrounding area is beautiful and fascinating(My husband and I spent a few days there ahead of our week in the villa ).

I hope that we get chance to join the happy group of returnees!

Thank you so much for sharing this delightful house and making it such a perfect home from home.Thank you also to Karen always just at the end of the phone(or email).

Le Chardon D'Or - Utter Bliss

  • 5 of 5

Our 5th visit, this is the most special and welcoming villa we have ever had the privilege to stay in. Glad to review this stunning place in 2016, all my comments still stand except, of course, that year by year it gets better and better. This summer, we were surprised by yet another lovely landscaped terrace and the upgraded aircon was brilliant!

The villa is privately situated on the outside edge of Golf de Pont Royal and is individually gated and fenced. All ages are well catered for, whether you want peace or entertainment, and there are beautifully manicured and spacious spaces for sharing and an abundance of options for a peaceful escape. All terraces provide fabulous Luberon views and sweet provencal air and at night, the lights of nearby villages twinkle prettily.

Driving or flying, it’s a wonderful relief to arrive to made-up beds, plentiful hot water and ample piles of soft towels. The welcome pack provides an immediate cup of tea or much deserved hit of Cote de Provence! Whatever makes life more pleasurable and comfortable has been thought about at this stunning villa. With quality furnishings (inside and out), it is supremely well equipped and exceptionally maintained throughout. Additionally, the studio, overlooking the sparkling, warm pool and sheltered pool terrace, is great for independent teens or grandparents.

Golf de Pont Royal itself is immaculately kept, as befits an internationally renowned course, with reassuring security as well as on-site restaurants, shops, hotel (and spa!) Moulin de Vernegues, etc.

Delicious artisan patisseries as well as takeaway rotisserie chicken and pizza outlets abound. The nearby Intermarche, in Mallemort, has fuel and a pharmacy and adjacent roadside fruiterers offer locally produced fruit, olive oil, wine, jam, etc. There are so many fabulous places waiting to be discovered from great food options, the wine trail, brocantes and so much more. We never tire of the buzz of colourful markets (day and night) offering amazing, quality products. Our favourite is picturesque Lourmarin, which also has interesting gift shops and restaurants, and sums up everything Provencal.

Local manager, Karen, is a huge asset. She is the fount of all local knowledge and will happily help with any problems day or night.

This is a truly outstanding villa and we can't wait for 2018!

Owner's Response: Not sure I can add to this, it's fantastic when guests enjoy Le Chardon D'Or as much as we do. It is a great pleasure to welcome returning guests, 10 weeks of 2018 is already reserved by regular visitors, this the best endorsement possible.

Fantastic 5-Star Accommodation and Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Le Chardon d'Or was the perfect setting for our family holiday, with the highlight every evening of watching the sun set behind the Luberon mountain range..with a glass of rose of course!

The villa is only 25 minutes from Marseilles airport and is really close to many historic and scenic towns, Gordes, Isle sur la sorgue and Saint remy to name but a few. Many of our days were spent visiting towns on market days and then returning back to the villa for a drink and afternoon swim.

The villa itself is very spacious and has many lovely outdoor areas to enjoy a drink, BBQ or play boules. We all enjoyed the warm pool and spent much of our time there relaxing and sunbathing. The garage even had a pool table and table tennis table. Air conditioning inside the villa meant we could enjoy watching SKY-TV, playing games or reading when it was too hot outside . The kitchen has everything you would have at home to prepare meals any time of the day with areas to eat inside and out. All bedrooms were a great size, with a fantastic balcony in the main bedroom to enjoy the views with a coffee in the morning.

Locally, there were many restaurants to try and the information on arrival gave us many recommendations. The steak restaurant in Mallemort is great and is an easy cycle from the villa. We also spent a day at Chateau La Coste and enjoyed a wine tour, bought some wine and had a nice meal....would highly recommend this trip!

We played golf at the 18 holes course on the domaine. It is a fantastic course, again with great views. Try and keep the ball straight, something we struggled with!

All in all we all had a fantastic holiday, the owners were great before arrival and Karen who lives locally is on hand to help with anything. Needless to say we have already booked for next year!

Owner's Response: Many thanks Chris, not just for your very thoughtful review, but it's great to know that you are returning in 2018. 80% of the bookings for next year are 'returners'! Might be a case to install a golf simulator in the garage, some practice might be helpful before heading out on the course....

With a panorama of views to the Luberon and easy access to the Mediterranean, you’ll find yourself in a region famous for sun, food, wine, beautiful villages, dramatic landscapes and a wide range of sporting and cultural opportunities.

The Roman cities of Avignon, Aix, Arles, Nimes and Orange are all just a short drive from the villa. Take in the remarkable amphitheatres, palaces, and attractions such as Pont du Gard and Les Baux.

Exceptional wines are produced locally, and in the many villages around Chateau neuf du Pape you’ll find memorable tasting tours.

The 'market circuit' rotates around local villages, where you will discover flowers, seafood, fruit, local meats and other delicacies alongside antiques, linens, and Provençal arts and crafts.

Sport lovers are well served by golf, walking, climbing, skiing, paragliding, fishing and most other activities. This is also a gastronomic heaven with an endless supply of fine eating venues from simple to Michelin; you have 5 restaurants within walking distance from the villa.

Other Activities: children's clubs, kids farm, drama etc.

Golf: The villa sits on Golf de Pont Royal, one of Southern France's most highly rated and celebrated venues. A fully stocked pro-shop, and 5-star clubhouse serves excellent food all day. It also has one of the most extensive wine cellars in the region.

A challenging and breathtakingly beautiful course, maintained to the highest standard, visitors are welcome throughout the year. In mid-October, Pont Royal plays host to the Masters event, for professional golfers, welcoming European tour pros.

The Provence and the French Riviera offer many excellent golf clubs, which almost all welcome non-members. Many of these golf clubs are less than one hour away from the villa. We recommend the Provence Golf Pass which offers a great value way to play the region’s best and most spectacular courses, full details on request.
