Quiet Yorkshire village cottage in beautiful hill-farming countryside

Updated: 03-Oct-2016
Two bedroom 19th century stone cottage

Anvil Cottage is in the centre of this charming Swaledale village across the quiet road from Gunnerside Ghyll stream and adjacent to the very small village green and rose garden. It has two main rooms downstairs, a living room and kitchen/dining room, plus a small toilet, and two good-sized double bedrooms upstairs with a separate shower room/toilet. A basement contains the washing machine and freezer but requires good mobility to access. Heating is by electric storage heaters in all main rooms; these heaters also have a convection heater facility to boost temperature by day if cold. There is a very small garden area in front of the cottage. The local bus service stops within 20 yards. There is a restaurant and a pub within 50 yards of the cottage and local shopping is available 4 miles away in Muker or seven miles away in Reeth. Telephone is available for incoming and local outgoing calls, and free wi-fi is included in the rental.

About the Owner

We are Andrew and Ita, and we live in Anvil Cottage for part of the year, and in West Cork, Ireland for the other part. Andrew was born and grew up in South Yorkshire and trained as a doctor at Sheffield University. Ita was born and grew up in the midlands of the Republic of Ireland (county West Meath) and trained in medicine at the University College, Dublin. Ita worked in Zambia and Malawi in East Africa for many years, then returned to the UK where we worked together in the National Health Service in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire before retiring.

Comfy home-from-home in perfect location

My partner and I've just had a lovely stay in Anvil cottage which is right in the centre of Gunnerside - a great little village in Swaledale for walks and relaxation. The cottage is well equipped with everything a couple might need for a visit and is warm and snug even without the lovely woodburner, though that's a nice touch too. Only one two-seater sofa so might not suit four people going. We'd go again.

Owner's Response: Thank you! We are already looking for a second sofa to replace the cottage suite two-seater in the living room so hope will be more comfortable for two couples in the future.

Great house ins great location!

Andrew was a joy to deal with, great prompt service.

Anvil cottage is a beautiful house with everything you need for a relaxing comfortable stay.

For a winter stay the log burner was a delight to come home to after a morning exploring the many walks in the dales.

The cooking facilities were more than I expected. As the house has an Esse (aga style) that I would recommend only experts use! I was nervous that as a cook I had a baby belling and a two ring plate.... It proved to me that you dont always need expensive equipment to cook!

Comfortable beds, great shower and fab Wifi.... and the house was always warm even without the stove.

Gunnerside is a great base for many many walks in the dales. The walk to Muker was particularly nice and the walk up either side if Gunnerside Gill was satisfying although challenging with the wettest Dec in years.

The pub is 50m from the house, serves basic lunches and the usual pub food in evenings. Good food at very reasonable prices, and you are made most welcome by Kelly.

Would totally recommend Anvil Cottage as a great base for exploring the remote and beautiful North Yorkshire Dales.

Anvil Cottage was an absolute delight. It was perfect - cosy, comfortable, clean and in an excellent position for exploring. The towels and bed linen were clean and of good quality. The cottage was warm morning and evening. It was the perfect place to return to at the end of a busy day or to just relax and let the day pass you by. The village offers many enjoyable walks and the residents are very friendly. The local pub was very welcoming with good service and good food and was child and dog friendly. The owners of Anvil Cottage were very informative about the cottage and always on hand if you had any questions. We hopefully will return to Anvil Cottage as it was perfect for us and would highly recommend this cottage to anybody wishing to visit this gorgeous part of Yorkshire or to use it as a warm welcoming base to return to from a busy day of exploring this beautiful part of England. Our three year old son cried when we left as he loved it here as much as we did.

Quiet cottage in a beautiful landscape

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The owner was very helpful, despite not living nearby. The village it is in is nice, but very small. The owner provided detailed directions, but it was still confusing. Look carefully at the pictures, as the sign for the cottage is very faded. Inside, it is nicely appointed and has everything you need. Would recommend to others!

From the Owner

Gunnerside is a beautiful and peaceful place and we both love the countryside and interest of North Yorkshire. Gunnerside, as with other communities in Swaledale, has a strong community sense and there are still strong traditional values influencing community life and lifestyle

Swaledale, the most northern of the Yorkshire dales, is beautiful and peaceful. Walking, cycling and sightseeing are the most popular activities, and off-road cycling is particularly well supported and popular. Locally the buildings from old lead mining add interest to any walking or cycling. Further afield there are many historical places and buildings to visit including medieval abbeys (e.g. Fountains and Jervaulx) and castles (e.g. Richmond and Bolton Castle). Sightseeing tours can be punctuated by sampling the many Yorkshire Dales Tea Shops for which the area is well known.

From the Owner

We enjoy living in Anvil Cottage as much because of the surrounding village and countryside as because of the cottage itself. However, we do love it as our home; it feels like a traditional old Yorkshire cottage (although it is now much better insulated than when we bought it!) In winter we enjoy using the wood-burning range which makes a good focal point for the kitchen and which we built into the kitchen as part of our effort to live gently on our planet. It cooks, heats the hot water and provides central heating in winter, but we do not recommend its use during the rest of the year as it makes the kitchen too warm and can be very smoky during lighting. We have planted an area of woodland and a traditional orchard above Gunnerside which we look forward to harvesting for food and fuel in due course.
