About this property

Charming Sapphire Blue Owls Head Waterfront Cottage

Sapphire Blue Cottage on Mahalas Lane with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.

Maximum number of guests - eight - with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.

Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled near the end of a private lane. A guest of the cottage, the author, Marianne Cushing, has had published (December 2013) her debut novel, Mahalas Lane (the lane of the cottage and hence our address), which uses the cottage as a point of reference for her investigation-romance work of art. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.

Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)

Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Little Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach, Ash Island and Sheep Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, thus the beach is private and unique in that sense as well.

On the south side of the property line landscape by the beach house, there is a walking path that runs through the trees along the south side of the beach house down to the shoreline that residents of the lane have used and are and have been permitted to use for at least going over the past 86 years.

Any other non-guest foot traffic to the shoreline through the cottage property is not permitted. The cottage provides for our guests its own private access to the shoreline from its own private cottage property grounds which run to and meet the shoreline, the perspective of which is captured in the accompanying photographs.

The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, pristine white ship-lap throughout, a number of small, port-hole windows and a built-in, ship's cabin-like bed.

At the front of the cottage, there is an ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space at any time of the day; especially for sitting on the patio for morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the ocean. Then it is also pleasing to stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.

The main house (cottage), approximately 196' from the shoreline, and the beach house, approximately 72' from the shoreline, has three bedrooms which includes two king and two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a built-in twin-sized bed and, beneath one of the two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a trundle twin sized bed.

The first upstairs bedroom is an open-space concept with a built-in twin bed that mimics a ship's bunk, a small, port-hole window and two large casement windows that open towards the ocean. Two twin beds, a love-seat sofa and the built-in twin bed described above. This bedroom also provides a trundle twin-sized bed, from The Bedworks of Maine, that is placed beneath one of the two twin beds.

The downstairs and upstairs master bedrooms have Danforth Mission style platform king beds from The Bedworks of Maine and ocean views and adjoining bathrooms.

The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the ocean and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.

There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom upstairs is an open space bedroom where children and young adults often stay and provides two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a love-seat sofa and one twin built-in bed that mimics, as mentioned above, a ship's bunk. A twin sized trundle bed is also provided beneath one of the two twin beds. This open space bedroom has a view of the ocean and enjoys ocean breezes and the sound of the ocean striking the shoreline - especially at night when reading a book or falling asleep.

This open space provides the sense of breadth, the flow of both natural light and late-night catching-upwith friends or family, peace, relaxation, wing-span and comfort for the bonding of families and friends.

The second upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one Danforth Mission style platform king bed from The Bedworks of Maine with an ocean view with comfortable furnishings

There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers a Danforth queen Mission style platform bed from The Bedworks of Maine, as well as a campaign style desk-table, two slipcovered sitting chairs, a state-of-the-art BioLet 65XL composting commode situated in the beach cottage's exterior closet, an under-counter refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, a flat screen television, cable television, Blu-Ray DVD player and Internet WI-FI, a countertop water dispenser and a spacious deck with a panoramic view of the ocean. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.

The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).

Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine). The General Store in Owls Head offers breakfasts, the famous 7-Napkin Burger and is an authentic, old style general store.

Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).

These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.

The cottage offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, hair dryer, hand held clothes steamer, cable television in the cottage and at the beach house and Internet Wi-Fi connection in the cottage and the beach house. The outdoor patio has a Char-Broil 4 burner LP grill.

Quaint Cottage with Modern Amenities
My husband and I stayed here for two weeks and had a wonderful time. My sister and three daughters with two of my grandkids were able to join us for part of the time. Everyone totally enjoyed the cottage and the surrounding areas. We have been traveling to Maine for a good 50 years and have rented every kind of house, cottage or cabin there is out there! Paul’s home was still quaint but had all the conveniences you could ask for! We had a washer and dryer, dishwasher and even two king size beds! All the laundry and cleaning products were provided and we had a never ending supply of paper products. I’ve never rented a place that was more generous. My 14 year old grandson stayed in the beach house by himself and was elated to have his own space. I found a nearby lobster pound that we visited frequently for fresh lobster at dock prices. We also loved going to Jess’s for fresh haddock and specialty items. Our favorite restaurant was The Happy Clam and my favorite place is Pemaquid Point. Don’t miss them if you get the chance to go there. I would not hesitate to rent this home again if the opportunity arises. We loved it!

Beautiful setting
The place is very much as depicted in the web site -- cozy, charming, peaceful. It is very convenient to Rockland and there is a short walk in the Ash Point Reserve not more than a minute down the road. Paul was very responsive to requests (the woodpile had been depleted by the prior guest and he was quick to replenish it).

Owl’s Head Vacation
The house was charming and comfortable. We were blessed with about five sunny days…wonderful after coming from a very rainy summer. Disappointed that the house was not actually in a private setting on the water…pictures seemed to indicate a more private and picturesque setting. Our host bent over backwards to take care of anything that needed to be taken care of…
