About the property

Le Manoir du Bout du Pont

Set in three acres of gardens, our charming historic Manoir and its apartment, is within walking distance of the quiet village of Le Sauvetat du Dropt; just a five minute stroll across the 23 arched roman style bridge takes you to a bakery, grocery store, tabac, the excellent Ma Maison restaurant, and a post office.

The house has three floors and boasts six well appointed bedrooms, all ensuite.

The apartment is above what used to be the stables for Le Manoir and overlooks the pool from its large terrace. It has an open plan living space with two ensuite bedrooms, all with air conditioning.

The swimming pool, which measures approximately 12m x 5m, is surrounded by a hedge and very private. There are umbrellas, seats and eight sun loungers for the pool area. The pool is protected when not in use by a remote controlled retractable cover. The temperature of the pool is between 24 and 26 degrees during the summer.

A variety of games are provided and include a table tennis table, and two sets of golf clubs. Golf Boissec, a small nine hole course, is just along the road. Chateau Vigiers with its 27 hole golf course is only a 20 minute drive away. A couple of sets of golf clubs are available for your use.

There are many day trips possible from visiting the vineyards of Bergerac, Duras and St Emilion, to the numerous bastide villages around, and there frequent markets. The nearby Escourou Lake provides a beautiful setting for walking.

Notes for Season 2017

• Preference will be given to bookings for the whole property from Saturday 1st July, 2017 to Saturday 2nd September, 2017.

• The property and garden are ideal for weddings and garden parties and we would be able to advise on various suppliers.

• All bedding and house and pool towels are provided

• Both houses are non-smoking.

Le Manoir and its history

There is a certain mystery around the beginnings of the house and some articles even make reference to it being linked to the Knights Templar, which was disbanded in the 14th century.

What is known is that the Pigeonnier in the grounds of Le Manoir dates from the 16th century and has been a National monument since 1953. The existence of such a structure means there must have been some sort of a dwelling at this time. However, the core of the present house is believed to date from the 17th century as the sundial carries on it the date of 1699, together with a Latin saying "Non omnes qui mane micant sub vespere lucent". Apparently, this saying is often found on sundials, and roughly translated means, "not everything that sparkles in the morning light, is found again during the night".

Stone corbels, which would have supported a turret of some description can still be seen in the dining room and from the terrace at the back of the house. This gives the impression that the house was used to defending its position at some period of time and there are other clues around the house that lends support to this theory, including a small round opening, in one of the bathrooms, through which one can imagine firing a gun…

The Pigeonnier is often photographed and appears on the internet. It is one of the best examples in France and has nine columns.

About Angela Sharp

We are originally Scottish but have been expatriates for more than 30 years, mainly in Africa. However, our one posting out of Africa was to Paris and we fell in love with France, and all things French, and were determined, one day, to buy our own piece of rural France; and we did. We are happy to share our French home with you and hope you, too, are captivated by the charm of Le Manoir du Bout du Pont.

We have two other properties which we let as holiday homes through HomeAway and these are in Ballater in Scotland. We felt it important to have a base for our two children as they grew up in Africa. They are now adults, and the eldest was married from Glenbardie, the name of the main house. We haven't had the heart to part with either of the Glenbardie houses and are happy that they are appreciated by the guests who come to stay there. The houses can be viewed on HomeAway or www.glenbardie.co.uk

Why Angela Sharp chose Agnac

Our search for the 'perfect' rural property took us almost 10 years. We were looking for somewhere that had character, atmosphere, gardens, and, ultimately, somewhere we could eventually put down our roots. We found these in Le Manoir.

Although in the countryside, we are within walking distance of Le Sauvetat du Dropt, with a grocery store as well as a bakery, tabac, post office and a wonderful restaurant, Ma Maison. Also, Eymet and Miramont de Guyenne are both 5 kilometres away, with banking facilities and supermarkets.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Le Manoir has its own pigeonnier (a National Monument ), almost four acres of ground with many secluded places to take a nap or read and a large swimming pool. Two large gates and a walled area immediately around the house mean you have also have a very private and secluded garden, as well as the wild area with pond to wander when you wish to.

A wonderful house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The house is even more beautiful than it appears on the website with amazing facilities, loads of space to play games, lovely hideaway corners in the gardens for quiet drinks, easy to get to yet in the depths of the countryside, large bedrooms with comfortable beds, a well equipped kitchen, good sized swimming pool and very helpful hosts discreetly on site to answer any questions. We were only there for a week but can't wait to return for more!

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

3 families of 4 stayed in July/August. An easy drive from Bordeaux or Toulouse. The House is huge and easily accommodated us with space to spare - the photos on the website do not do justice to this lovely place. Fabulous grounds and a great, well sized pool. Outbuildings with Bar (!) and a spacious recent barn conversion which would be ideal for a wedding or other large celebration. The nearby village is an easy stroll with a nice local restaurant and a fun village eat-out once a week. Good supermarket less than a 10 minute drive away.

We cannot wait to return.

So many places to see and not enough time. This is the quandary you will find yourself in when you visit this region of France, the world renowned vineyards, the markets with the delights of the produce of the region especially the foie gras, the bastide villages and the beautiful countryside. A relaxed day trip will take you as far as St Emilion or Périgueux or Sarlat.
