Stunning location in the hills above Arco da Calheta, this single storey stone-built house offers masses of space, comfort and an opportunity to enjoy glorious views and wonderful sunsets. The house is L-shaped, one end consisting of a huge open-plan lounge/kitchen/dining room with extensive windows/glass doors allowing you to enjoy the scenery .There is easy access to the garden, veranda, barbecue area & pool. The three south-facing bedrooms also lead out to the veranda, pool and garden. Pine trees cover the hills behind and a 'levada' (irrigation channel with footpath) runs below, inviting you to stroll east or west for as much as 20 km in either direction if you like!

REASONS FOR CHOOSING MADEIRA AND CASA ROCHINHA: For nature lovers, Madeira has plenty to offer, with a subtropical climate,fabulous views and a landscape covered with spectacularly colourful plants. Peter and Jeanne, the owners of Casa Rochinha, have established a lovely garden full of interesting plants. Part of the island has been pronounced a World Heritage protected site, this is the area of the Laurisilva forests located 15 minutes' drive away and well worth exploring, especially on foot. Walking the island has become very popular with visitors who can follow long trails along the islands water courses, locally known as levadas. For golfers there are two excellent golf courses and for those seeking sea swimming, you can pop down to the sandy beach at Calheta. The capital of the island is of course Funchal, 30 minutes' drive away. As well as being very attractive and spotlessly clean, it has interesting museums, Madeira wine lodges, an excellent variety of shops and many restaurants for all tastes and budgets.....

This has been a 10/10 holiday. The villa felt like home from day one and we have found it faultless; facilities and equipment have met our every need. The pool has been used most days, warming from a chilly 17ºC to a beautiful 27º today. The location of the villa is simply magical with different themes of the same view every morning and evening. The levada walks are just as good now as they were 18 years ago when we last visited Madeira and the views from the tops have been amazing. The kids have had a fantastic week & they should be pround of their achievement taking on the hard walks their Mums & Dads have done! Having said this they loved the beach at Calheta where they could enjoy a few hours of 'sand & sea'! Boat trips from Funchal to see fish/dophins were great. Rock pools for swimming at Porto Moniz also great. (Note from Charlie: I loved playing football on the sandy beach, swimming, the food and the glass bottom boat.)

Be great in High season

All very pleasant. Definitely recommend this place in high season. Slightly unlucky weather half our stay. Was unaware til we arrived that the pool is only solar heated, so only usable 2 afternoons for us. It is also a 15 min drive, nit walk, to calheta beach. Otherwise, very homey, great view. Had everything you could need. Levado walk at bottom of the garden very worthwhile. Turn right!

Absolutely blissful!

Jeanne and Peter could not have made the whole process any easier! We had the most wonderful three week stay in the cleanest and most well catered for property we have ever stayed in. We were met at a local easy to find location and taken in person to Casa Rochinha, shown around and everything explained. The property, pool and gardens were kept spotless with regular cleans throughout the stay. Jeanne kept in touch through the holiday to make sure we were happy with everything. The house itself had all you need for a self catering holiday, and more! The location is rural and peaceful but only 10 mins drive from the town and beach, just perfect! We will be back! Thank you for a fabulous place to stay on holiday!

Fantastic could not have asked for more

This was our 1st visit to Maderia and it was beautiful would highly recommend. Everyone we met were friendly and helpful, their English was 100 times better than our Portuguese. The villa was amazing we really couldn't have asked for more. The kitchen was fully stocked with every utensil and gadget you could need. The swimming pool was a huge hit with the kids who within 5 minutes of arriving were in their swimsuits and jumping in. Even in November the weather was stunning. I was expecting it to be a lot colder inside the villa in the evenings but it was fine with just a jumper. There were numerous heaters and fleeces around which we didn't need. The location of the villa was perfect for us as a family as we like to be close to amenities but have our own space. The views from the villa are amazing and an ideal spot if you like watching the sunset. Car hire is a must, the roads and infrastructure around the island are very well maintained which made sight seeing very accessible and easy.

Wish we could have stayed longer than our two weeks

The villa is very well equipped with everything to make for a very comfortable stay. It is a lot larger than it looks in the photos and is in a lovely quiet location 600 mtrs above the sea so sometimes we had a lot of cloud cover during out two weeks. This didn't bother us though as if we wanted more sun we could always go down to Calheta Beach. The levadas run at the bottom of the garden so you can go for lovely walks right from the end of the drive. The drive up the villa the first time we did it was a bit frightening as it is up steep hills and the road is narrow in places but after the first couple of times it becomes less daunting. Once you are up there the views from the villa are well worth the climb. We spent a lot of time sat looking out of the patio doors watching the beautiful sunsets and looking at all the lights from the houses below. Worthy of note is the villas garden which had more colour than the Botanical Gardens in Funchal.
