Stylish waterside apartment in Port Rive Gauche with breathtaking sea views

Updated: 26-Oct-2016
Light and airy luxury 2-bedroom waterfront apartment with south-facing sea views

Located on the quaint historic port of Marseillan, Salicorne is a luxury waterfront 2 bedroom apartment with breathtaking sea views of the 'Etang de Thau' lagoon from every room. The south-facing sitting room windows slide open completely and disappear into the walls, turning the whole room into a spacious interior terrace where you can almost believe your toes are in the water. The stylish apartment offers elegant and comfortable self-catering accommodation for 4. Marseillan, described by the UK's Sunday Times newspaper as 'staggeringly pretty' and looking like St Tropez before Brigitte Bardot, remains an unspoiled local village with an unhurried nature and no crowds. In the village, its market and in the many restaurants alongside its pretty port you will find some of the best seafood you will ever taste.

Simply decorated in natural hues, the apartment is a blend of traditional elegance and contemporary living. It sleeps 4 people in 2 bedrooms, one with a very large double bed and the other with 2 single beds, both with fitted wardrobes. Both bedrooms have sea views and double 'French Doors' which open onto a covered terrace overlooking the water, ideal for relaxing and outdoor eating. The sunny dual-aspect living room with dining area looks onto the lagoon as well as the port entrance and has an additional small side-balcony perfect for a quiet read or an aperitif. In addition to casual seating, a large comfy sofa is perfect for viewing the passing sails and sea birds. The dining table seats six and there is an additional outdoor table and chairs seating 4 on the terrace. Two deck chairs are also provided.

The open-plan kitchen is small but perfectly formed and has all the modern equipment necessary for relaxed self-catering, should you wish. This includes a dish-washer, large fridge, induction hob and multi-function oven. A kettle, coffee-maker and toaster are also provided.

The bathroom offers both a luxury deep double-end bath as well as a separate walk-in shower with overhead rainshower. Along with a wash basin, there is also a heated towel rail and hair drier. Good quality bathroom towels are provided within the rental cost. There is a separate wc with wash basin.

The apartment has integrated air-conditioning/heating, controllable in the living room and both bedrooms. Should you need to stay in touch, free Wi-Fi access is provided throughout your stay. For leisure, in addition to a small flat-screen satellite TV with integrated DVD player, there is an i-pod dock music system. Other amenities include a communal laundry room with washing machine and separate drier. Secure on-site car parking is available in the garage on request.

The apartment Salicorne is on the first floor and can be reached by stairs or lift. It is wheelchair accessible and is on one single level.

Located in a quiet waterfront spot, the port with its cafes and restaurants is just around the corner from the apartment. The centre of Marseillan, dating back 2500 years and reputed to be the oldest continually occupied village in France, with its myriad of narrow winding streets, shops bars and restaurants is a 5 minute walk away.

For those seeking activities, there are bicycles, boats, canoes and kayaks for hire at the port. There are also water sports such as kite surf, wind surf and water-skiing in the village or close by. Dinghy and yacht sailing are on offer and Salicorne guests can take advantage of the owner's membership of a local sailing association 'Atouvents', enabling them to take accompanied sailing excursions on the etang at very low cost.

Cycle hire on the doorstep and a new dedicated cycleway can quickly get you around the southern edge of the Etang to Marseillan Plage and then along the sandy strip to Sete. For the more enthusiastic cyclist there are many quiet, well-surfaced back roads amongst the vines and foothills to enjoy.

For beach lovers there are miles of soft sandy beach and the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean are good for swimming and monitored in summer months.

Just a little further down the coast lies Cap d'Agde, one of the largest marinas in France where sea tours in glass-bottomed boats can be taken.

About the Owner

Salicorne at Port Rive Gauche was bought from the heart and remains so. I am an artist and I love spending time there enjoying the light and the ever-changing views in all seasons. For me both Port Rive Gauche and Marseillan are rare places with a special touch of magic.

The only word to describe this place. Utter heaven. The apartment is beautifully equipped and in a fantastic location. Restaurants, boulangeries, everything you could need is around the corner. I really can't recommend it enough. Did I mention the view? To die for!

On top of all the amazingness,Hazel the owner was excellent at communicating and went above and beyond with local advice and help. Not forgetting to mention Carole the agent on site who was also really helpful.

We had a fantastic 2 week stay with our children. My heart had always previously belonged to Provence but Salicorne and Marseillan have stolen it. Go! You will not regret it

Lovely apartment in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We found the apartment to be accurately described. It was well-equipped and bright, with a spectacular view of the lagoon. It was in a very central location - easy access to restaurants, food stores and harbor activities, and a reasonable driving distance to beaches and sightseeing.

The owner provided a helpful binder with info on the apartment area, and the local manager was very responsive to our questions.

We would highly recommend this apartment.

We found the apartment well appointed and in a beautiful location overlooking the water. The lift up to the apartment was very useful as my husband needed a stick after a hip operation. It was not far to walk to the village and restaurants were just round the corner. Also it had the best air conditioning I have experienced. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the apartment and our stay in Marseillan.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your lovely review. We enjoy hearing from our guests and we're very happy to hear you thoroughly enjoyed your stay. Good to learn too that the lift proved helpful and that the weather was such that you enjoyed the air conditioning. The latter is a very clever and very quiet system and, if the temperature happens to drop, it automatically warms too. Must work by magic I think.

Fabulous holiday

  • 5 of 5

Salicorne is a beautiful apartment and the views from the living room and balcony were stunning. We were especially lucky as the sun shone every day so we saw some incredible sunrises and sunsets and, in between, were able to explore the surrounding area on foot and by bike; we didn’t use the car once during our stay. Marseillan is a beautiful town and the bars and cafes provided us with ample opportunity to spoil ourselves

Owner's Response: We're delighted to hear you thoroughly enjoyed Salicorne and Marseillan. As you say, seeing the sunrise and sunset across the water is so beautiful - you can often see fantastic moonrises from the apartment too. And how lovely to enjoy a holiday to the full without having to use a car. The shuttle bus that runs to Marseillan from Beziers airport to meet every flight means that car-free stays are quite easy - and, as you found, there's lots to see and do within walking distance as well as good local bike hire too for those wishing to go further afield. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Beautiful stay with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in Salicorne. We were met as arranged and indeed everything in the apartment was clean, tidy and welcoming.

We have stayed in Marseillan before and love the little port and harbour. The apartment has a gorgeous view and terrace directly overlooking the water with the port to one side. There is a great choice of local restaurants and things to do. Hazel gave us lots of useful advice for which many thanks.

From the Owner

Salicorne at Port Rive Gauche is a wonderful place to stay in Marseillan - it is in the best location with unparalleled sea views and having the advantage of cafes, bars and restaurants just metres away but without their noise or intrusion. Our rates are fully inclusive of taxes, end of stay cleaning, linen and towels. Dedicated WiFi is in the apartment and is also included in the price. We discovered Marseillan whilst cycling through on a touring holiday many years ago and instantly fell in love with it. With friendly people, beautiful scenery, fabulous food, delicious wines and lots to see and do, what's not to love?

Apartment Salicorne at Port Rive Gauche in the lovely village of Marseillan faces directly onto the most spectacular salt water lagoon of the Languedoc. Opening into the sea, the “Etang de Thau” is an endlessly fascinating haven whether it be watching the light sparkling on the water or the fisherman's boats passing by at the end of the day. Its eastern shore forms an 11km-long sandy beach, with the Mediterranean on one side and the calm waters of the lagoon on the other, stretching from Sete - known as Venice of the Languedoc - to Marseillan Plage. The western shore is home to traditional activities such as fishing, oyster culture and wine-growing whilst on the southern shore a small lighthouse marks the official end of the Canal du Midi, a World Heritage site. The clean clear waters of the Etang and the protected nature reserves around it are home to a host of wildlife including visiting flamingos.

The local airport at Beziers is 20 minutes away, Montpelier is 45 mins, Carcassone 75 mins, Perpigan 75 mins and Nimes 75 mins. At Beziers there is a shuttle bus costing 3 euros which meets every flight and runs between the airport and Marseillan, dropping you off only 5 minutes from the door of the apartment and scheduled to take you back for your return flight. So unless you wish to go further afield, a car isn't necessary for your stay.

The nearest train station is at Agde, with local and TGV services, just 10 minutes away.

Boasting 300 sunny days a year and one of the oldest villages in France, Marseillan remains an unspoiled place with a beautiful port and an ancient quarter of narrow streets offering shops, church, theatre and bars and a weekly market. With more than 20 restaurants within walking distance to choose from, every taste is catered for from Michelin star dining to take-away pizza. Tasty locally-caught fish and seafood as well as excellent local wines can be enjoyed at any time of year on the pretty port alongside the moored leisure boats. The world famous Bouzigues oysters, cultured on the oyster tables of the Thau lagoon, can also be tasted fresh from the water for a few euros at many of the fishermen's shacks dotted along the water's edge, just a pleasant stroll from the apartment. Or try their Brasucade of freshly harvested mussels cooked in white wine over a wood fire.

As the sun sets you can enjoy a delicious 'Marseillanais' aperitif after a guided tour of the Noilly Prat wineries. Established since 1813 in Marseillan port, this is the home of the famous vermouth used to make the original Martini cocktail. Whilst both red and white vermouth types are sold world-wide, Marseillan is the only place where the exclusive Ambre version can be bought.

Being the largest wine producing area in the world, wine-makers abound in and across the Languedoc. There are five wine producers based in Marseillan itself, the nearest being just 100 metres from Port Rive Gauche. At all of these you can taste an array of the local whites such as Picpoul de Pinet, a perfect accompaniment to seafood, or the many sumptuous warm reds for which the Languedoc is renowned. Alternatively take a scenic drive up to the mountains to Faugères and St Chinian, less than an hour away. Here, on the slopes of schist rock, you can discover the delights of the many artisan producers making wonderful appellation wines full of body and structure.

Marseillan Plage, with its recently renovated palm-lined boulevard is the place for beach lovers, with miles of sandy beach and blue sea good for swimming.

Pezenas, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the south of France, is less than 30 minutes away. Well known as a home of arts and crafts, its centre is a maze of tiny streets which are a delight to wander, discovering the beautiful 16th century stone houses with magnificent façades, staircases and balconies as a well as many artisan shops and tiny restaurants. The large Saturday market is always a bustling hive of activity which brims with local produce.

Sete, the 'Venice of Languedoc' whose twinkling lights on Mont St Clair are visible from the Salicorne apartment at night, is a large lively fishing port with excellent shopping, markets, galleries and museums, and a traditional quayside fish auction every evening.

Saint Guilhem-le-Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage site and designated one of the most beautiful villages of France, is less than an hour’s drive away. This ancient village is surrounded by the wild and rugged countryside of the Herault Gorges. One of the highlights is the 12th century abbey church, sitting serenely below the towering rocks. 3 km away is the Grotte de Clamouse, one of the most stunning caves in the world where guided tours take you along walkways surrounded by limestone crystal structures of every type imaginable, culminating in the magnificent cathedral room with a dramatic sound and light show.
