About this property

Prime Location - Traditional Japanese Home Away From Home

This charming and characteristic machiya townhouse is located on a quiet lane leading up to the Chawan-zaka approach to Kiyomizu Temple (an UNESCO World Heritage site), just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the busy souvenir shops and restaurants lining Ninnen-zaka and Sannen-zaka below the temple`s main gates.

The interior offers a harmonious combination of Japanese design and beautiful antiques with modern features such as hardwood floors with beautiful carpets and a tatami room with a comfortable couch.

Downstairs, there is well equipped full-sized kitchen. The dining area has a traditional Japanese antique "mizuya" cupboard and opens out on to a deck with a small Japanese garden beneath which flows a little stream from Kiyomizu temple. The sound of flowing stream, birds singing and the temple bells ringing give you much joy and set your mind at ease.

There is a Western-style toilet and a full Japanese-style bath downstairs. The two bedrooms are upstairs and get plenty of light. The large, high ceiling-ed Japanese-style tatami mat bedroom sleeps up to 3 people in single futons with extra mattresses to get a good night's sleep. Across the hall, the Western bedroom has a queen-sized bed which is cozy and comfortable.

The neighborhood in the Higashiyama district in which the house is located refers to Kyoto's eastern mountain range, and also the historic area which has been catering to tourists and pilgrims for centuries. Kiyomizu Temple is an especially popular destination for viewing the cherry blossoms and the autumn colors. Visit and explore a variety of temples, gardens, restaurants and coffee shops and the numerous shops selling traditional handicrafts and arts as you wander the steep and ancient back lanes paved with stone north to Yasaka Shrine (10 minutes) or Gion district (10 minutes) where the geisha ply their trade.

Easy access to Fushimi Inari shrine which is famous for its thousands of vermilion Torii gates.
From Kyoto Station, it’s 15 minutes by bus to the Gojo-zaka bus stop, a short walk from the house. Our delightful and charming house in Gion-Kiyomizu is perfectly located for enjoying the best the ancient city of Kyoto has to offer.

Full of character
Wonderful traditional Japanese house in great location. Very quiet but for those who don't like bright bedrooms bring an eye mask! Like most Japanese houses there are no black out blinds.

Stay here to make your Japanese Adventure Complete......
We stayed in Acco's beautiful home for 6 nights 7-13 November 2018. Having stayed in what appeared to be similar accommodation just two streets away in 2014 this accommodation and location was so much better. I was expecting a similar (tiny) set up, however, I was so suprrised to find a whole house to enjoy (honestly in Japanese terms this home is spacious). Walls and floors in Japanese property are this so sleeping was difficult in 2014 but this time I slept like a baby!! Acco met us at the taxi stand near the house. The ride from Kyoto Station is just 20 mins making it easy with Acco's written instructions (in English and Japanese to give to the driver). Acco helped us with our bags and she is extremely helpful and so easy to talk to. In just 10 mins we were in the house located in a quiet back lane. The downstairs includes a generous sized kitchen/dining area, a toilet, a sink area, a utility room and a shower/bathroom. The bedrooms upstairs are tranquil and we woke up to the sound of birds and fell asleep to the sound of cicadas. The views at the back looking down the stream with the back of the Japanese homes make a fabulous photograph for your memories. The whole house Is truly Japanese with beautiful wooden floors (and ceilings), sliding fly screens, windows and Japanese paper screens making it very cool or very cosy depending on your preference. Acco explained the bus system in order for us to visit The Silver Pavilion/Philosopher's Path/Eikando Temple (in 2014 I crucified my knows walking all day to this area). The bus stop is just 10 mins away. We also used this bus to find Demachi-Yanagi Station so we could visit Mount Kurama (see the magnificent countryside views and use the funicular railway). On another day we walked to Gion Corner/Kamo River/Pontocho Alley/Nikshiki Market and used our final day to visit Shoren-in Temple for the day and evening illuminations. We are both vegetarians which, from the last visit, I know is extremely difficult in Japan (what may look vegetarian will have bits of meat, fish or oil oil within the food) so Acco helped us both locate restaurants (quite a few in the area and places we visited) plus help at the supermarket(s) and we made all our evening meals - Japanese style :-) She also gave us a written explanation to give to restaurants or shops (and this came in ultra handy in Tokyo too). Staying in this house, with Acco's support, made our holiday truly memorable. I'd stay here again in an instant.

Quaint traditional Japanese house, perfect stay for a small family
We stayed here for 4 nights during August as a family of 4, kids aged 9 & 13. The location is fantastic being walking distance to main cultural spots of interest, places to eat and convenience stores. A taxi rank is just down the road if you want to travel further afield. At the same time its on a quiet road behind the main street with no traffic. Finding the house is no problem if you follow Acco's clear instructions and recommendations. Acco was welcoming and provided plenty of useful information for our stay, excellent polite comms in the run up to our stay, fluently bilingual. The house is old style with compact amenities, tasteful and quaint furnishings with nice touches. It was very clean throughout. We had a simple meal once in the dining room but didn't cook in the kitchen at all, it had everything we needed though, lots of glasses, enough plates, etc. Typical for old style Japanese houses, the stairs are very steep which is OK going up, but precarious walking down and you have to be careful. Despite this, I did like languishing in the comfort of the upstairs tatami room with the sofas after a long day on my feet. We were grateful for the ample AC in every room as it was a particularly hot summer. The Japanese modern fitted bathroom was good and nice to use at the end of each day of hard sweating, with a spacious shower area and smart bath controls if you fancy a soak. Plenty of towels to use. We were also thankful to be able to make use of the washing machine. The toilet room is very compact, so you can't lean forward too far when getting on or off the 'throne' and I'm only 5'5'', but you come across this fairly often in Japan. I would have liked a simple latch to secure the door from the inside, we had to enforce a rule of calling or knocking before entering after a couple of toilet intrusion incidents! The bed and futon were comfy, though the bedding material was a tad scratchy and our daughter didn't want to use it. It wasn't so much of an issue for us due to it being the height of summer and so not requiring much cover. My son made good use of the wi-fi for his gaming laptop that he can't be without. So all in all, this house was good and comfortable enough and we had a pleasant stay. Recommended.

Ideally-located, traditional-feeling, cosy, tranquil but with all mod cons
Acco’s property was the perfect base for our stay in Kyoto - easy access to Gion and to the station, and so to all other parts of the city. A stone’s throw from Kiyomizu-dera, but on a quiet side street. Acco met us at the nearby taxi rank, showed us to the house, explained everything we needed to know, and gave us loads of tips on places to visit, eat, shop at, etc. So friendly, helpful and welcoming. If we go back to Kyoto, this is where we’d want to stay.

Very nice Japanese house
The house is very cosy (2 rooms, one standard and one Japanese room), clean and very well located near to Gion. The location is quiet. Acco was available before and during our stay. The file provided regarding the house was well detailed and our stay was very pleasant. We highly recommend this place during your stay at Kyoto.
