The Property

Recently restored and renovated, The Smithy is a perfect getaway designed for two. Originally an old farm steading, the property has been sympathetically redeveloped to create accommodation which effortlessly combines form, function and character with a wonderfully warm and inviting living space.

The cottage is set within the main grounds of Turvelaws Farmhouse and has been carefully remodelled to create a contemporary space designed to meet the needs of today but with a clear nod to the property’s former life - using old stone, natural materials and oak beams in its redevelopment. Set in the beautiful surroundings on the edge of the Northumberland National Park and overlooking the Cheviot Hills, it really is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all.

The open plan accommodation sits on one floor and has been simply furnished using neutral colours and natural textiles to create a warm stylish living area. A stunning inglenook fireplace is the focal point of the room and guests will love the cosy ambience created by the wood burning stove - perfect for snuggling-up with a good book! A beautifully presented kitchen comes fully equipped and includes a small dining space for two people.

The cottage is fully fitted with state-of-the-art eco-friendly technology including an air source heat system with underfloor heating and therma-fleece insulation, ensuring that guests are kept warm even on the chilliest of days.

The property can also be let in conjunction with ‘The Dovecot�� (sleeps 8+2), and ‘Topsy Turvey’ (sleeps 4 but set a short distance away) and is ideal for larger parties wishing to holiday together.

Activities and Attractions

The Smithy is within the grounds of Turvelaws Farm and is just half-a-mile from the attractive market town of Wooler which offers a good range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, including the super ‘Breeze’ art gallery which incidentally serves a fine coffee and light lunch! The highly regarded ‘Gear for Girls’ outdoor/sportswear retailer is based on the main street (you may have spotted them on-line), and ���The Good Life Shop’ is a wonderful deli selling cheeses, cured meats and health foods. More extensive shopping is available in the historic towns of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick and Kelso which are all within an easy half-hour drive.

The property is perfectly placed for exploring the wider area, and its position at the foot of the Cheviot Hills makes it a superb spot for walking, cycling and enjoying the great outdoors. The outstanding countryside around Turvelaws Farm offers gentle walks in scenic surroundings, however more challenging hiking can be found amidst the stunning scenery of the National Park. St. Cuthbert���s Way passes through this area, the 62 mile walk from Melrose Abbey to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or enjoy nearby walks to Linhope Spout and Routin Linn with their fantastic waterfall picnic spots. For cycling and mountain biking, there are extensive routes and trails nearby for family-friendly recreation, including bike hire available locally. For more challenging terrain, the Pennine Cycleway passes just outside the door making it an ideal stop-off for those embarking on the full route - an ideal retreat for resting tired legs at the end of the day.

Horse riding is available locally at nearby Kimmerston and fishing is available on the River Till or Wooler Water. Both have good runs of sea-trout and salmon throughout the season as well as good numbers of grayling and brown trout. For golf enthusiasts, Wooler has its own 9 hole course with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside whilst Goswick, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Alnmouth are all within easy driving distance. For something a little different, gliding can be arranged through the Borders Gliding Club or perhaps take a trip in a Hot Air Balloon - incredible experiences never forgotten.

The cottage lies within half an hour's drive of Northumberland's magnificent coastline, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just perfect for rest or play. One of our favourite spots is Bamburgh Beach with miles of pristine sand, nestled behind huge sand dunes and overlooked by the impressive Bamburgh Castle. Finally why not head home via The Barn at Beal, a restaurant and coffee shop in a spectacular location overlooking the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and sample some of the finest local produce on offer there.


The accommodation at The Smithy is all on one floor and is therefore suitable for less mobile guests.

Open plan kitchen/dining/living space includes fully equipped kitchen with dining space for 2 guests. Living space includes a comfortable two seater sofa, TV, DVD and CD player and a small selection of books.

A tennis court with ball machine is available for guests use but own racquets are required. A LTA Licensed CCA Tennis Coach is available for private booking.

The property can be let on a self-catering basis, or part or fully catered options can be arranged including a pre-arrival shop if desired or a homemade meal delivery service.


The property sits close to a working farm and is set in the courtyard in the grounds of the main Farmhouse alongside The Dovecot. The owners live nearby and are extremely happy to help guests with any questions or information regarding local amenities and activities.
