SEPTEMBER COTTAGE - close to Melrose and the Southern Upland Way, sleeps 4, Wifi

Updated: 27-Oct-2016
Cottage, 2 bedrooms, 4 people

September Cottage sits in a gem of a spot in the very heart of the country that inspired the writings of Sir Walter Scott. It is situated in an extremely sought-after area close to the one of the most picturesque towns in the Scottish Borders, and provides a perfect base to explore the stunning Borders countryside. It sits close to the River Tweed, the Southern Upland Way and the enchanting market town of Melrose, where the outstanding monastic ruins of the Abbey rise majestically in the shadow of the Eildon Hills.

The property is immaculately presented and offers cosy, comfortable accommodation for up to 4 guests. The sitting room has been thoughtfully furnished with rich warm fabrics and lovely antique furnishings and artwork, while the well-appointed country kitchen looks out onto a sunny private garden and patio where you can plan your day over your first morning cuppa and a freshly baked croissant!

The property benefits from a flat screen TV with Freeview and DVD, an ipod dock, as well as books, games, DVDs and CDs for relaxed nights in or wet-weather days, and the two bedrooms (one double, one twin) are presented in a pretty country cottage style with comfortable mattresses to ease you into a blissful night’s sleep.

The cottage sits in the peaceful conservation village of Gattonside, originally used as an orchard by the monks of Melrose Abbey, and features narrow winding paths from the main street which lead down to a charming suspension footbridge first erected in 1826 which links the village to the town of Melrose. Gattonside has two highly regarded restaurants - Chapters Bistro and The Hoebridge restaurant both just a short walk away. You will find an excellent range of amenities in Melrose - a five minute drive or a 15 minute walk - including a super selection of quality food shops, some of the best independent shopping in the Borders, and a number of wonderful eating establishments.

An excellent cottage for a base to enjoy the Borders and within easy reach of Edinburgh

  • 4 of 5

A lovely property well situated with many attractions close by. The property was clean , modern, well furnished, warm

The new railway line to Edinburgh with its regular service provided a good link to do sightseeing and yet be based firmly in the Borders.

Our first impression of September Cottage on approaching was how overgrown the garden was.

  • 3 of 5

On arrival the handrail on steps hidden behind overgrowth of shrubs. Back garden very overgrown never got afternoon sun in as trees so overgrown. Hanging basket looked as if hung there for years as moss in base and weeds ,basket rusty. Cottage kitchen very dark because of overgrown garden no natural light in. Fridge very smelly and sour so needed a good clean before use. Overall cottage average but no dressing table in bedrooms or towel rail in bathroom. Taps very loose in bathroom so had to tightly turn off or hot water came back on. Bathroom door catch very dodgy. Could say slightly disappointed. Welcome pack not as shown on ads. Never found the wine.

Activity and Interests

The famous River Tweed sits minutes from the property, and some fantastic salmon fishing can be found on notable middle Tweed beats such as Tweedswood, Bemersyde and Lower Pavilion. There are riverside walks directly from the cottage, or you can link into the Southern Upland Way, the Borders Abbeys Way, St. Cuthbert’s Way or the Sir Walter Scott’s Way from Melrose.

For sightseeing, the area sits in the heart of myth and legend - pay a visit to the outstanding architecture of Melrose Abbey and uncover its connections to the monks of the Cistercian order, Scottish Kings, and the philosopher wizard. Take time to visit the Leaderfoot Viaduct, an outstanding 19 arch structure spanning the Tweed before heading to the historic viewpoint of Scott’s View - a must-visit with beautiful panoramic views and the inspiration for many of Sir Walter Scott’s writings. After a lazy lunch, explore the Roman fort of Trimontium from nearby Newstead or head into the Eildon Hills where King Arthur is rumoured to be buried. Alternatively the grand stately homes and gardens of Abbotsford, Manderston, Mellerstain, Floors Castle and Thirlestane all sit nearby.

Golf fans will be in heaven here with over 60 courses to choose from across the region, while cyclists will delight at the range of biking options across the wider area from long forest cruises to high energy burning climbs, including the 7Stanes biking centres at Innerleithen and Glentress which sit just a half-hour drive from the property.

For families, there is a playpark in Gattonside as well as two further parks and tennis courts in Melrose. A multi-screen cinema, skate park and leisure pool can be found in Galashiels (4 miles), while a riding centre and woodland adventure playground with huge slides and zip wires can be found at Bowhill House & Country Park in Selkirk (10 miles).
