Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Artists's Cottage. It exceeded expectations and helped to make our stay very memorable. The previous review has mentioned the degree to which the cottage has been made welcoming and we loved the log fires, cosy living rooms, beautiful objects and very comfortable bed. The cottage is very well equipped so we didn't want for anything - even bird food for the birds! Craster itself is a great location with fantastic walking from the cottage, along the coastal paths and especially to the ruins of Dunstanburgh and beyond. We were able to explore a lot of Northumbria easily and managed trips to Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads, Holy Island with its castle and priory, a coastal tour up to the Firth of Forth via historic Berwick on Tweed as well as several local walks including the stunning beach at Bamburgh. We can also recommend Warkworth and the amazing birdlife in the local area (apart from impressive sea and wetland birds, Barn Owls were spotted three times in different locations). The Jolly Fisherman provided a couple of excellent meals at reasonable prices and lunch is recommended for the sea views. Craster kippers can be bought from the local smoke house and the local cafe is also excellent. As it was low season some historic properties were not open during the week but some opened at weekends. Even though the weather included high winds from the recent storm, most of the week was fine with good sunshine and dry days - at one point Polar Stratospheric Clouds appeared which we could view from our bedroom! We highly recommend this property. Thanks to the owners for a wonderful week.

Couldn't have chosen better!!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 2 couples celebrating my husband's 50th birthday with 3 nights away from it all.

Where do I begin!, well the cottage is perfectly positioned, harbour, cafe, pub, and fish smokers shop all within easy walking distance. Inside the cottage is charming and deceptively roomy with every comfort thought of, and a wonderful welcome cake and basket awaited our arrival. It is very clean, and was soon warmed with adjustable electric radiators. There were 2 woodburners, one in the living room and one in the dining room with logs provided. (only downside to this was that the logs were wet and therefore difficult to burn, but having said that, we were definately warm enough, and the fire just added to the overall cosiness in the evenings.)

In the 3 nights we were there we managed to fit in 2 visits to the local pub, the Jolly Fisherman, food was lovely, but a little pricey, and 2 visits to the Shoreline Cafe, where it was also warm and welcoming, served good food at a reasonable price.( 2 of our party are Pescatarians and were delighted at the choices.) We also enjoyed a walk along the coastal path to Low Newton and ate at the Ship Inn, which also served good food, it was very busy even in the middle of January, which I suppose speaks for itself!

One day was taken up with a visit to lovely quaint Bamburgh and it's castle, although we decided there was no time to venture inside as we wanted to see Seahouses, & Beadnell too!

On the way home we had a brief walk around Alnwick, it's gardens and glimpsed at the castle through the gates, (it was closed for the season) We also located the infamous Tree House Restaurant, which had opened that day after reburbishment, gasped at it's beauty and magical qualities, before we went on to lovely Amble. (The little shop pods near the harbour are closed on a Monday as we found out to my friend's dismay! This gives us all the more reason to return in my book.)

All in all a fabulous long weekend with some happy memories and wonderful pictures, isn't that why we work so hard??!! :)

Owner's Response: Dear Deborah, Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Artist’s Cottage. It’s a lovely cottage in a great spot and a fab venue for your husband's 50th. I have passed your comments over to the owners who are also very pleased. The owners will also check the logs and see if there is any better storage options to ensure they are dry for burning. Apologies that you had trouble burning the logs. There are some great seafood restaurants along the coast so it's great that you were able to sample them. Thank you very much for your recommendations. Thank you so much again for your lovely, kind comments – it is greatly appreciated. I hope we can welcome you back to Artist’s Cottage in the near future. Kind regards, The Crabtree & Crabtree Team
