About Iris Jaspers

We live and work in the South of France since 2005. In the middle of the vineyards of the Dordogne, close by St Emilion, Bergerac, Périgueux, Bordeaux or Sarlat and the Atlantic Coast.

Our adventure started with renting out a few rooms in our house. Step by step we built out our dream….Today we offer our guests a choice out of 5 gîtes, chambre d’hôtes, 2 perigourdine-houses, a village house and a renovated manor house.

Iris Jaspers purchased this chateau / country house in 2009

Why Iris Jaspers chose Montazeau

It was not intentional…but summer 2009, just after the birth of our twin girls, we fell in love….

…the old stones of the mannorhouse “La Chartreuse des Moulins' had seduced us!

After a whole winter of working and renovating, our new project was born in 2010.

230 years ago this big house was an old post “house” with its 2 pigeonniers for the pigeons. Today it has become a luxury guest house.

We kept the old elements of the building and mixed them with new, white, cool and design furniture.

It’s become an ideal location for families or friends. It sleeps from 4 to 16 persons.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Chartreuse des Moulins is a charming former post house from 1870 with two towers (pigeonniers = pigeon houses), now a romantic holiday on a spot in the middle of pure nature, with tranquillity and an exceptionally beautiful extensive views.

Montazeau

Montazeau is one of the highest villages of the neighbourhood. It’s located at about 10 km south of Saint Martin de Gurson, where we live at “Le Guinot”. Montazeau has beautiful views! You see the other villages far away and there are vineyards all over the place…..

It’s a lovely area with lots of little streets. Walking and biking are beautiful in a hilly landscape.

At about 5 min. there’s a bigger village with bakeries, an all round shop, a pharmacy, a post office, pub, restaurant. At 10 km you find all bigger supermarkets

Welcome to wine country!

We're in the heart of wine country in Montazeau! Here you can enjoy award-winning local red, rosé and white Bergerac and Montravel wines, made at properties a short distance from your holiday home.

Just 30 minutes away are St. Emilion and Pomerol, exclusive districts of the vast Bordeaux vineyards and home to some of the finest (and at Ch. Petrus, the most expensive!) wines in the world.

We can organise a tour of a vineyard on request.

Places to visit

Every day there are local markets in different places. In summer it’s worth going to an evening market whith music, local food, dancing!

15min : Montpon, little “practical” town where you find several supermarkets and on Wednesday a nice local fresh market.

15min : Sainte Foye La Grande, a « bastide » . Small nice town but comes mostly alive during the Saturday market ! classified as one of Frances nicest markets!!

30min : Saint-Emilion : A must!!! Nicely renovated wine village, known from all over the world and protected! Lots of little old narrow streets. Lots of wine boetiques (expensive!!!). Go and drink a glass of local champagne in the ruines of the old abbey of Les Cordeliers. You by tickets for a visit to the monolytic church at the tourist office.

30min : Bergerac. Old and new part of the city. Small city again. Markets on Wednesday and Friday. Monbazillac is close and famous for its sweet white wines. Beautiful château! Eat at La Tour des Vents in Monbazillac!!!

30min : Libourne. Worth a visit at Sunday morning!, or combine when going to St Emilion or Bordeaux. Take the little roads to go there, not the motorway!!

30min : Riberac. Friday market. Quiet town, take a quick stop when going to Aubeterre.

45min: Aubeterre: wonderful art village; has a monolitic church! Amazing!

30min: Castillon La Bataille: not very special; only at market days (Monday). In july and august they organise a big show at the site of a castle with hondreds of actors and horses....the play of the war of 100 years! A exceptional experience!

45min : Bordeaux. A mix between Antwerp, Barcelona and Parijs. A world city, easily visited by foot! You can walk here for hours and hours. Little streets, the river, shopping, terrasses, antiques, ....so many things to do and to see! You cannot miss Bordeaux!!

45min : Périgueux. A bit smaller than Bordeaux. Do the walk around the old part of the city (by following the arrows). Worth a visit!!

45min : Brantôme. The Venetië of the South. The Dronne River runs through the center, which makes it very beautiful. You can take a ride with a small boat.

30-75min : From Bergerac to Sarlat : Dordogne Valley, with Sarlat, Domme, Beynac, St Christophe, Limeuil, Lalinde, Lanquais… lots of little lovely places to visit ; with prehistorical caves, castles etc….

30-75min : the Bastide tour, small middle aged villages as Eymet, Monpazier, Beaumont

1,5h : Atlantic Ocean: Arcachon, Dune de Pyla, beautiful beaches, extrordanary dune, worth a day trip!

For the little ones

Of course the pool might be the most interesting for your kids, there are fun things to do for them in the neighbourhood! We have a lake with a beach and a play garden at a 2 min drive and a bigger one at a 20 min drive….you can go canoing on the Dordogne River of the Isle River….we organize horse riding every week….you can take your youngsters into the caves or castles….

Sports

Swimming in our pool or in one of the lakes nearby

Tennis on the village court (walking distance)

Jeux de boule or Petanque, typical french play for young and old

Canoing

We rent out bikes for 5 euro/day

Golf at Château Des Vigiers (19 holes) or 9 holes golf at 10 km.

4X4 quads, jetski, paintball at 10 km

Horseriding

Surfing and wave surfing at the Atlantic Ocean

Wonderful home in the French Countryside!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks. The first week was with two other couples. The second was with children and grandchildren. It was perfect! The setting is magical - overlooking fields and vineyards. The outside is perfect for al fresco dining. The set up of the bedrooms provided plenty of private space for all the couples and families. Good use was made of the pool and hot tub by all! Iris and Michael were great hosts and attentive to all our needs. They have a relationship with Chef Franck who cooked two fantastic four course gourmet meals for us. He also cooked two meals and left them for us to have for dinner after long days of touring. His meals were some of the best we had in France!

The house is beautifully appointed and has a great eat in kitchen. It became our gathering site when we were not sitting outside. Plenty of toys for the children as well as a nice swing set! One thing to remember - like most houses in this region, this house has a washer but no dryer. Not a problem on sunny breezy days - in fact it was lovely hanging clothes to dry on the line outside. However, it can be a bit of a challenge to get the clothes dry when the rain comes - especially when traveling with young children.

The gite is simply amazing. The whole site- gite, pool, grounds and hot tub are outstanding. We all had a wonderful time lounging by the pool and cooking together over the BBQ in the evening.

Absolutely stunning!

  • 5 of 5

The Chatreuse is absolutely stunning. We stayed in late June early July with a large group of friends which the property is ideal for. The overall property and its surrounding is stunning with a view looking out on to fields. Its a perfect place to spend some time relaxing- particularly in the hot tub! The property was beautifully clean and tidy. The owners are extremely friendly, they were very helpful and met us at the house with a warm welcome. The whole stay was perfect and we will definitely be back to stay very soon!

Absolutely gorgeous family house

  • 5 of 5

We were here in August with two families. We didn' t want to leave anymore. The house is a huge beautiful family house, lovely decorated...situated between the vineyards. For all family members you have absolutely everything you. need: playground, great pool, a hot tub, a bath tub in our bedroom...and all the room you wish for. The owners are great and offer the best service. We will definitely come back.
