We are a French/ British family living in London. We fell in love with the village of Montrésor when we lived in Paris and visited on holiday. We have owned property in the village ever since and come back as often as we can.

Sarah & Jean-Michel purchased this cottage in 2014

What makes this cottage unique

The Gamekeeper's cottage is wonderfully secluded, by the banks of the river and set in lovely grounds. Only a few minutes' walk from the heart of the village, you will have the perfect view of medieval village of Montrésor and feel as though you have stepped back in time.

Fantastic setting and cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in the cottage. The setting was perfect and the warm welcome by Sarah and Jean Michel helped us settle in.

The village and surrounding area was beautiful and the selection of tourist information in the cottage ideal for making the most of our time.

Highly recommended and will go back for longer next time

The village of Montressor is delightful and very convenient to see the Chateaus.

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in the "Game's Keepers Cottage". The village of Montressor is a delight with the Chateau of Montresor on your doorstep, the beautiful old cathedral and all of the amenities, the local market, patisserie, information for tourists and two wonderful restaurants. The cottage itself was comfortable, full of character and provided for our basic needs. The owners had returned to London and the larger home on the property was shut up for the winter, giving us the entire property to explore and enjoy. There were a few essential items missing when we first arrived but an email to the owners rectified that, within the same day their housekeeper delivered what we requested. There are a couple of things that could use some work, we had read in a previous review about the complaint of the smell of "mold and mildew". When we first arrived and opened the door the smell was overwhelmingly strong and the first thing we said was "that really smells like a mold problem". We live in coastal British Columbia, we have a lot of rain in our winter months and mold and mildew problems are not uncommon, so we recognize the smell (we don't have that problem in our own home). Mold does not have to be visible, it can be between walls, in an attic, etc. The other reviewer was correct, it does present a health hazard. The building can be tested for it's presence and it can be treated.

The other issue was cleanliness. The old wooden beams, many corners, window sills, etc, had cobwebs with dead insects caught up in them. It quite honestly looked like neglect, there is absolutely no reason that cannot be cleaned . It did not add to the character. We are currently staying in another old stone cottage in the Dordogne region of France, it is larger with old wooden beams and braces everywhere, guess what(?), no cobwebs or spiderwebs. I asked the owner how they kept them clean, she said vacuuming and a long duster.

These critiques are intended to help not to be nasty, you have a beautiful property and with more attention it will sparkle!

ruhig und romatisch, Erholung pur!

  • 5 of 5

Very enjoyable stay in a modernised character property in an excellent situation. Very close to the village, the chateau and the river. Well appointed and looked after by an owner who is keen to ensure guests have all they need for an enjoyable holiday.

Mold & Mildew Infested

  • 1 of 5

Stay was nearly unbearable due to the level of mold and mildew in the place; reached out to owners and they merely accuse us of finding fault. We are very experienced travelers and know the signs of Mold: peeling paint, old water marks and shower doors that will not close. We tried to reach out kindly but the owners who by the way are absent (always a bad sign for us as we find active owners who are near have much nicer places..we call them absentee landlords in the US) but rather than taking offered critique they choose to attack us in their email. Not pleasant at all. Even with all windows open the top level was still unusable and we were of course exposed to bugs instead of mold; by the time we returned at end of day house again was rampant with mold and mildew smells; not good for asthma sufferers; Also as long as we are accused of being renters looking for issues: place was dirty as well, dust and cobwebs everywhere. They try to make up with cheap jam, cookies, coffee and bread but even the Italian coffee maker was severely dirty and molded. Could not imagine this place in the heat of the summer. TOWN was amazing though go to the Cafe DeVille most friendly people and where the town's 'royalty' goes.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Frankly I'm at a loss to know how to respond as your comments are so at odds with the experiences of all our other guests. I can only think your perspective on the world must be very different. I would just like to reassure our guests that there is no mould or mildew in the cottage and there never has been - I don't know how you came to that conclusion. Jean-Michel

Sublime location, great support when a few issues eventuated

  • 4 of 5

Both Sarah and her partner were overseas during our stay. The location is magical as is the village. We experienced a few issues at the cottage which were resolved quickly despite the owners being away, as their housekeeper lives locally. Sitting in the wonderful garden after a long day sipping bubbly was a highlight as was eating at the very rustic restaurant in the next village, Chemille. We're from Sydney Australia and a very long way from home, however we'd love to come back again. Highly recommended.

There is a wonderful chateau in the village and the many famous Loire Valley chateaux are within 45 minute drive: Chenonceau, Amboise, Valençey, Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau... to name a few.

Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci's last home is excellent (in Amboise). The zoo Beauval in St Aignan is world class and has giant pandas, the only ones in France.
