Villa Alicia is a very spacious well equipped residence on the lovely Punta de la Mona end of La Herradura's beautiful bay. The views from the terrace, and indeed most of the rooms, over the sea are stunning and special mention goes to the big picture window in the upstairs lounge. Although the temperature was around 30 degrees and above whilst we were there, the sea breezes keep things comfortable even at night and none of our party had to use the aircon much at all. La Herradura town is a bit of a hike back up the hill and we did use taxis a couple of nights but that's the trade-off for the wonderful views, peace and quiet and cooling breezes. Also there is a little noise from the nearby hotel but usually just a distant background of kids playing which you stop noticing after a short while). Obviously there is no noise at all after midnight so sleep is never disturbed. On the subject of sleep, special mention must to to the beds. The 2 big sleigh beds in the 2 main bedrooms are the most comfortable we have ever slept on on holiday, great John Lewis mattresses with built in mattress toppers!. The Villa was clean, the pool was great and the heating system took the chill off it (decent size too). The upstairs TV was great for watching the European Football championships and the results of the EU referendum (eek!).

Rachel and Carl couldn't have been more helpful both during the booking process and when we were there, although to be honest we didn't encounter any problems. There is a really useful information guide on arrival and the restaurant recommendations were all spot-on.

Overall we loved coming back to La Herradura, all 8 in our party could have stayed on for a lot longer and we would wholeheartedly recommend Villa Alicia and Costa Tropical Villas. Let's put it this way, we returned home on Saturday afternoon and by Sunday night were on the internet again planning our return!

A villa with the "Wow" factor

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this villa is first class. It is beautifully furnished, clean, comfortable and spacious. Our family of 12 stayed here and made good use of all its splendid facilities, included the solar heated pool which is very effective - "the best ever" according to our 10 year old grand-daughter. Our arrival was very well managed by Rachel as was our departure. We were very grateful for the telephone call from Michelle, one of the cleaning team, informing us we had left a bag behind . I can thoroughly recommend Villa Alicia and Costa Tropical Villas. The walk to La Herradura is steep but all the younger members of our family managed it without any difficulty. The villa is situated next to a hotel but there was absolutely no disturbance during our stay there (school half-term holiday).

Villa Alicia is in the top two places we have ever

  • 5 of 5

We are a family that has scattered to all 4 corners of the world. Every two years or so we organize a trip to meet up, hire a large house for an extended period of time and just enjoy each others company. We have done this in Mexico, the USA and Spain. We recently stayed at Villa Alicia in La Herradura. Right from the get go, when we shortlisted the house, Costa Tropical Villas took less than 24 hrs to reply to our questions. The booking and payment was simple to make. On the day of our arrival we got to the house considerably later than expected and Rachel came to house to let us in.

The house was perfect. 6 large bedrooms with plenty of space for all 13 of us. One bedroom was large enough for my sister, her husband and two kids to sleep in. Plenty of bathrooms to go around, which is something that some large houses sometimes don't have. The kitchen was excellent. Really well equipped. Large enough to prepare meals for the 13 of us, "No worries". The dining table was also large enough for all of us to eat together. There was also plenty of space for people to find a quiet corner if they wanted to get away from the others. Great TV, although it didn't get much use from us.

Then there was the view, what a view; perched on the side of a hill, overlooking the Mediterranean and the local marina. Beautiful. The pool was perfectly maintained and at just the right temperature to cool off whenever we wanted. As a bonus it also comes with an automatic pool cover which is resistant enough that if one of our children had fallen in, they would have just sat on top of it - great peace of mind.

La Herradura is a short, somewhat steep 10min walk. With loads of tapas bars, restaurants and a small supermarket you have pretty much everything you need to just stay put and enjoy your time there. If you have a car, you have Malaga and Granada each about a 30-45min drive, with countless beaches and hikes, rides, caves, walks and more bars.

The consensus in our group after having done about 8 of these trips now, was that Villa Alicia was in the top two places we had ever stayed at. We would absolutely recommend it to everyone.

Fantastic vacation

  • 5 of 5

Although I have stayed in La Herradurra for many years I have never had the privilege of staying on this side of the bay. Although it neighboured a hotel we were not over looked and had the most beautiful views of the sea. The Villa was excellent and big enough for all of us.

I would def recommend this place and will go again

Beautiful fully furnished holiday house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, together with our friends stayed for a week in Villa Alicia for our wedding.

We had a wonderfuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul time;

- Rachel is an absolute angel and helped us organize the holidays, shared tips on restaurants, sent a detailed map to reach the house. She knew we were landing late, so she left some food and drinks in the fridge for us,

- The house is perfect for 10, enough space, bathrooms, big living spaces (2 living rooms, 1 dinning room, outdoor dinning room...),

- The terrace is actually bigger than it looks on the pictures, and the swimming pool was hot even on a first of May,

- The view on the see is breathtaking,

- The house is tastefully and completely furnished; the duvet is stuffed with feather, loads of decorations, there is everything you need and more to cook.

Notice that if you are bored of sipping sangria alongside the swimming pool, you’ll need a car; while La Herradura is cute and has everything you need, Granada, Malaga and other sight sighting stay a good hour drive away. Think about Frigiliana which is nearby and super nice for a half day trip.

Anyway, thanks Rachel!

Nearest Airport : Malaga at 65 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : La Herradura at 1.5 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Baviera at 15 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : N340 at 2 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : La Herradura at 1.5 Kilometres Nearest Ski : Sierra Nevada at 100 Kilometres Nearest Beach : La Herradura at 1.5 Kilometres Car: recommended

La Herradura is a small coastal town located 50 minutes from Málaga airport. This traditional town is to the East of Málaga and part of the province of Granada on the Costa Tropical. It is special in so many ways; La Herradura means The Horseshoe and this striking bay resembles its name.

Traditionally this hidden gem relied on fishing and farming for its revenue and thankfully although there has been expansion over the years, the charm of the town remains.

There are many traditional tapas bars, the province of Granada is the only province where you are guaranteed a free 'tapa' with a glass of wine or beer, an old tradition of serving food with a drink which may be fresh fish, ham, cheese, or meats etc... Equally there are restaurants in La Herradura to cater for all tastes, there are the 'chiringuitos' (beach restaurants) specialising in fresh fish and shellfish. There are a number of Italian restaurants, a Chinese and some other cosmopolitan options catering for all budgets.

The bay is spectacular and unique and there are many water sports available. The area is synonymous with diving and snorkelling with many sites both in the main bay of La Herradura and Marina Playa which is just 5 minutes further to the East.

Other water sports include kayaking which allow access to some of the tiny coves and beaches that can only be reached by water, paddle boarding (the technique of standing on a surf style board and using an oar to paddle across the waves), Hobie Cats, sailing, surfing and much more.

The mountains that sit just beyond this pretty town have many pathways for keen walkers, cyclists and for horse riding, all amongst the most stunning scenery.

Depending on the time of year that you may visit, there are many local fiestas.

In March we have La Herradura’s patron saint day of San José with a funfair, traditional Flamenco dancing, horse show, bull fighting and horse racing on the beach.

There is also an annual 'Romeria', a traditional weekend where all the local horsemen, women and children ride around the town in their traditional costumes.

San Juan, June 23rd, is a national fiesta when many people camp on the beaches and for that night only are permitted camp fires and at midnight everyone cleanses themselves in the sea.

For those seeking the sunshine and an experience of traditional Spain within easy reach of Málaga airport opt for East rather than West and visit the beautiful village of La Herradura.

The city of Granada, an historic Moorish city with the famous Alhambra Palace is just an hour from La Herradura by car with the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada approximately 20 minutes further.

One of few places where one can have breakfast on the beach in the sun, go skiing all day and return for a sundowner on the beach in the evening and witness the amazing sunsets in this special bay.
