Ideally situated on the edge of the village and within walking distance of all amenities yet with a feeling of being deep in the countryside, La Vieille Forge is a stunning lovingly converted 18th century house. It was once the village smithy as the numerous horseshoes found about its grounds will attest. The house has retained all the character, charm and romance of an authentic and historic village house whilst offering the modern amenities that go into the making of a comfortable holiday including a good-sized swimming pool.

The house is set in its own large, south-facing garden. One walks out of the ground floor area on to a large dining/living terrace beneath two ancient lime trees with magnificent views across the plain of Fayence to the hills beyond. Dining here, after a day spent exploring the area, or simply lazing by the pool, is a magical experience. Beyond the terrace lies a large meadow, ideal for children’s games.

The house has four extremely light and spacious bedrooms, furnished with simple elegance. Three have double beds and their own en-suite bathrooms. The fourth room has twin beds and its own bathroom nearby. There is air-conditioning throughout the house. All the bedrooms have gorgeous views across the surrounding countryside.

On the ground floor there is a vast, well equipped kitchen/dining room and a large, peaceful drawing-room.

The medieval village of Fayence with its bustling market (three times a week) is set in the hills behind the Côte d’Azur. We feel that we have the best of both worlds here, being within easy reach of the coastal towns and beaches as well as of the mountains. There are other hill villages nearby, each with a very distinct character of its own and well worth exploring. One of France’s major gliding venues lies just at the foot of Fayence. This is a paradise for cyclists, hikers and walkers, not forgetting water sports enthusiasts who will find a whole range of possibilities available, including bird-spotting in their sanctuary on the superb lake of St Cassien nearby and the Verdon River Gorges - known as Europe's answer to the Grand Canyon - is only an hour’s drive away. For golfers, the world-class Terre Blanche course is only 5 minutes down the road. Sightseeing opportunities are too numerous to mention here, but art, history and archaeology buffs will find more than enough to keep them happy. .

About Alex and Christina

Totalling five different nationalities between them, Alex and Christina live in the UK. Alex is a documentary producer and Christina, who also has a media background, is a writer. Much travelled and of multi-lingual background, Alex was brought up mainly in the south of France. His family still live in Fayence and the couple were married in its village church. He seizes every opportunity to return to his childhood haunts and has an intimate knowledge of the region. Christina revels in the area’s beauty and finds its tranquillity fuels her creativity.

As we observe La Vieille Forge, its warm pink hues glowing in the setting sun, we always feel that our house has a rather inspirational quality to it. It combines what we love best: a comfortable place in which to relax and unwind set in surroundings that are not only attractive and soothing, but that have the welcoming solidity of an old and well established house. It is both a village house and a country property, easy to access and yet cocooned in its own large patch of countryside. To us, staying here feels like having our cake and eating it.

A little bit of heaven

What can I say? If you are looking for everything you could want and more, then look no further. We stayed for longer than a usual holiday period and after numerous email exchanges with the owners, they were there to greet us. As lovely in person as they had been in the emails. Fabien the house manager was also lovely. A really funny and helpful guy who will do anything to help you if you ask and we became firm friends.

The house is as gorgeous as the pictures and you will not be disappointed. Little features like the window at the top of the house that perfectly frames the church in Fayence, just add to the feeling of joy I had in this house. The pool is lovely and the shallow end was just right for a little one from about 2.5 - 3 years to stand up. The sunbeds are lovely wooden ones and thick cushions are provided for them as well as the outside chairs. My favourite spot was taking breakfast on the small patio in the lower garden. As this wasn't until my husband got back from his early morning mountain cycle, the trees provided shade and the view across the hills and the airfield for gliders, was so relaxing.

Having spent 6 weeks there, predominantly with only the two of us, I could write a book about it, so I will stop now.

If you want the most beautiful house with the most gracious owners, then this is where your holiday searching stops.

Beyond our expectations!

The description and photos of this fantastic villa were exactly as it was described. Correspondence with Alex,was very prompt. We were greeted by the property manager, Fabien who made us feel very much at home. He was more than helpful getting us acquainted with our new surroundings and area. The property is very well equipped and maintained, especially the kitchen . The garden is truly an oasis with a pool and ample seating and lounging area for our party of 8. All amenities are within a 5 minute walk of the village. This property definitely exceeded our expectations. We hope to return and will definitely recommend this property as a "must" place to stay in Fayence.

A real gem

A beautifully renovated, fully equipped, and tastefully decorated, home from home. Five minutes from the village and market & also from the wonderful Boulengerie and well-stocked supermarket. The villa has secure parking, pool, fabulous views & and a large garden with shady trees, there is also a warm welcome from the lovely, helpful local contacts & UK based owners. We would definitely visit again!

Absolutely great

We found it a bit difficult to clearly picture the house from the photoes. Let us be clear: The house and the property is stunning. For us it was everything we ever dreamt of in a provence house. The property is larger than what you can possibly need. The pool is perfect for children, and big enough for adults. The house itself is a dream. Every single room is decorated in a relaxed, yet classy style. Art, books, antiques. The central room of the house, the kitchen, is a spacious, bright, open room with a door to the yard. The kitchen has everything you need, and is simply inviting. The house is a five minute walk from the heart of what we found to be the most wonderful of many wonderful small villages nearby. Alex and his family were great hosts. The only drawback we found is that july is booked for next year.

First class villa tastefully furnished/equipped.

The villa has impressive room sizes with high quality tasteful decor and furnishings.The air conditioning is easily controlled in each of the rooms.The large kitchen is very well equipped with much new stylish utensils.We were warmly welcomed by a member of the owner's family and supported continually by the property manager,Fabien, who speaks excellent English.The garden,terraces and pool are very private. Car parking is secure in the driveway shaded by trees.Easy travel to Nice, Cannes and the Gorges and lavender fields. Excellent supermarket nearby. Very comfortable and relaxing holiday.

The lovely garden is made up of terraces (berges) , some of which are sloping and young children should most definitely be supervised when playing there and should wear shoes with some grip. The swimming pool is alarmed and can be gated but children should not be near the pool without adult supervision. The owners cannot be held responsible for any accidents. The Pool is open from mid May to the end of September.
