About the property

Traditional farmhouse gite for up 10 guests with private pool on Dordogne border

Unique farmhouse gite in South West France to let for holidays. The property includes a private pool with barbecue facilities close by - ideal for families, friends or couples wanting space and time to relax and take time out, whether spring, summer or autumn. Embrace the slower pace of life, meander through sleepy villages, vineyards, cafes and winding rivers.

WE NOW HAVE OUR OWN WEBSITE - please visit WWW.LAPETITEPOMMERAIE.COM.

Our lovely French farm house offers traditional features, a rustic feel and is furnished in a simple and comfortable style. Fresh cotton bedding and fresh white towels to make guests feel at home and a well equipped kitchen in order to prepare and eat fresh local food.

And then there are the wonderful views of the Charentaise countryside of South West France - from the terrace, from the house and from the pool. Watch the sun come up over the old lime tree, take in the fields of sunflowers, corn and maize. Then in the evening sunsets to amaze you as you relax by the pool.

The house is a detached 'longere' farmhouse and has a HEATED PRIVATE POOL (in ground, 8m x 4m, heated by solar panels, with sole use) with an auvent and barbecue area. A bright and airy kitchen/dining room leads onto a raised terrace with panoramic views of the rural countryside, where you can sit and relax. There are large areas of lawn and a selection of fruit trees, including apples (Pommeraie means "apple orchard"), cherries, fig, nectarines etc. Paper Mulberry trees provide just one of many places to sit in the shade and enjoy the view ..... and a hammock hidden away in the orchard. From October the house will sleep 10 and there are five bedrooms: one kingsize bed, one kingsize zip-together, one double bed and two with single/twin beds. (One pair of twin beds can be zipped together to make a further double bed.)

There is a travel cot available on request if required.

The kitchen/dining room is spacious with a large farm house table, ample storage, a cooker & hob, larder fridge with freezer and dishwasher and is very well equipped for cooking for all the family.

Amongst other kitchen appliances, there is a Tassimo coffee machine so you can enjoy coffee and croissant on the terrace. There is a separate laundry room with a washing machine and an additional freezer and a microwave.

There is a large sitting room with comfy sofas, Sky TV and access to the terrace - cool and airy in the heat of the summer and cosy by the woodburner on cooler spring and autumn evenings.

There is table football, books and games.

There is a family bathroom with bath, separate shower & electric towel rail. In addition there is a newly renovated shower room with an electric towel rail.

There is air-con or heating available in the rooms if required.

Renovated early in 2015 - you can see how this lovely house has a welcoming warmth and lots of character.

We welcome enquiries, as we realise it is important to know as much as possible when planning a week or two in France. Please do drop us an email or give us a call if you need more information, a plan of the rooms, further details of the surrounding area. There are plenty of photos on this site, together with a couple of videos showing the unique location of this house and its pool.

The house is situated on the Charente/Dordogne border - a great base for visiting the surrounding region: Bordeaux to the south west, La Rochelle to the north west, Bergerac to the south and also Perigieux and the gorges near Sarlat to the south east.

"Location, location, location! *****

Firstly the house was lovely, had everything you could need. Pool lovely, view lovely, weather....not so good but got better as the week went on. When the sun was out, we spent most of the time outside by the pool, at the table or just looking at the view."

About Wendy & Simon Johnson

Originally from deepest Devon, we brought up our family in Somerset and continue to live & work here. We stumbled across this old farmhouse in the spring of 2014 and we love to spend time there when we can. The warm stone and fields remind us of home, but the addition of sunflowers, sunshine & an even slower pace of life, makes it a revitalising place to be.

Wendy & Simon Johnson purchased this house in 2014

Why Wendy & Simon Johnson chose Charente

Over the last 10 years we have spent most summers in the Charente/Dordogne regions of France as a family. We came to love the climate, the relaxed way of life, the activities available for all of us and the people we met. We also found it was so easy to reach in just a few hours, so that even a week felt like a wonderful long break. After a couple of years of searching, the location of this house, along with its traditional features and lovely views, left us with no doubt it had what we were looking for. It was certainly in need of some TLC ..... but most old French properties do! So we set about renovating it and it is now a spacious gite, a simple and relaxing place to be.

What makes this house unique

The views from the terrace of this lovely old farmhouse were what made us want to be here and to let others share its charm and privacy. There are places to come together to eat and laugh, but also space for privacy and relaxation.

For guests booking ferry crossings, we can help with discounts, as we hold a Brittany Ferries Owners Abroad membership. Just ask me for further details.

Truly beautiful house in peaceful rural surroundings. Fields of sunflowers in full flower. Lovely pool and very comfortable sun loungers. Good bakeries near by and delicious local produce.

Fantastic property in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We have just come back from this amazing place, the house was a lot bigger than we were expecting and the gardens and views were breath taking.

It was very private and pool area was perfect for us, there is a BBQ area next to the pool with a lovely big table and benches which we all found handy especially my husband who doesn't like sitting in the sun but wanted to be with the family, so he was able to be in the shade there whilst we enjoyed the pool and sunbathed.

The property was clean and had all that we needed, (it was like home from home )and the owners were very helpful with any questions or queries we had.

We would recommend that you go to a restaurant called Morel's in Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, the food was excellent.!

The local bakery in Montboyer was really good for gluten free bread and cakes.

We will definitely be going back again and have already been recommending it to some friends.

We all came back feeling relaxed and refreshed.

The most relaxing holiday ever!!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most relaxing holiday ever. The weather was perfect. The location was perfect and the house was beautiful. It really was home from home. Everything that you could possibly need was there. We did a big shop at the supermarket in Chalais (which was only a 5 minute drive) when we arrived and used the freezer then used the bakery when we needed fresh bread. We had intended to visit a few restaurants for dinner but were so comfortable that we didn't get around to it. The barbecue area was great and the view from there in the evening was spectacular. We normally only go away for a week but we stayed for 2 weeks and really didn't want to leave. We took our dog and she loved it. The French seemed to be very dog friendly. We drove to a few of the villages and had lunch in the cafes and the dog was made very welcome. We enjoyed picking fruit from the orchard. There were cherry trees, apricot, plum, apple, pear plus others. The solar heated pool was wonderful especially when sunbathing as you could dip in to cool off. Wendy & Simon have thoughtfully given the house a really homely French country feel. The house was spotlessly clean and the furnishings were beautiful. Simon helped us organise a vet to check the dog over before we returned to the UK. We can't wait to return with our family (including our dog) next year. Thank you so much for a much needed relaxing holiday.

The most relaxing holiday, a beautiful house!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely late summer break here! We were lucky enough to have some hot sunny weather and be able to lounge by the pool. Making use of the perfect pool house complete with a great BBQ. The house was so clean and really well finished, equipped with everything you'd need. Including cot for our 10 month old. Wendy was so helpful too during the booking. Highly recommend

Our traditional farmhouse is set in a tiny hamlet situated in lovely rolling countryside of the Charente region of SW France and on the border of the Dordogne region. Great for families, friends or visitors of all ages, this charming old farmhouse is only 12km from Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, officially listed as one of 'The Most Beautiful Villages in France' since 1993, it has a river beach and cafe, ideal for families, in addition to canoeing & tennis. It also has the extraordinary, monolithic, underground Church of St Jean and the Romanesque Church of St Jacques, with its stunning façade.

Fresh bread is available from the local bakery only 2km away in Montboyer, as well as in Chalais just 5 kms, which is also great for all groceries, a supermarket and a weekly market. You are also within easy reach of Montmoreau St Cybard, where there is another supermarket.

St Emillion is an hour's drive west of Montboyer near Bordeaux - and one of the top vineyards to visit in the area - perfect for a day trip.

Brossac is close by with a swimming lake, activities and a restaurant cafe.

St Aulaye is only 25 minutes drive and has river beach, excellent cafe, arbor-aventure (tree climbing) and water slides.

Another beautiful town great for a day trip is Brantome, with its chateau, waterways, bridges and many restaurants.
