Farmhouse gite & private pool - stunning views of the Charente countryside

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
Traditional farmhouse gite, with private pool in the Charente near Aubeterre

We are delighted to welcome guests to this traditional farmhouse gite in south west France - ideal for families, friends or couples wanting space and time to relax and take time out, whether spring, summer or autumn. Embrace the slower pace of life, meander through sleepy villages, vineyards, cafes and winding rivers.

This lovely French farm house offers traditional features and is furnished in a simple and comfortable style. Fresh cotton bedding and fresh white towels to make guests feel at home and a well equipped kitchen in order to prepare and eat fresh local food.

And then there are the wonderful views of the Charentaise countryside of South West France - from the terrace, from the house and from the pool. Watch the sun come up over the old lime tree, take in the fields of sunflowers, corn and maize. Then in the evening sunsets to amaze you as you relax by the pool.

The house is a detached 'longere' farmhouse and has a HEATED PRIVATE POOL (in ground, 8m x 4m, heated by solar panels, with sole use) with an auvent and barbecue area. A bright and airy kitchen/dining room leads onto a raised terrace with panoramic views of the rural countryside, where you can sit and relax. There are large areas of lawn and a selection of fruit trees, including apples (Pommeraie means "apple orchard"), cherries, fig, nectarines etc. Paper Mulberry trees provide just one of many places to sit in the shade and enjoy the view ..... and a hammock hidden away in the orchard. The house sleeps 8 and there are four bedrooms: one kingsize bed, one double bed and two with single/twin beds. (One pair of twin beds can be zipped together to make a further double bed.)

There is a cot available on request if required.

The kitchen/dining room is spacious with a large farm house table, ample storage, a cooker & hob, larder fridge with freezer and dishwasher and is very well equipped for cooking for all the family.

Amongst other kitchen appliances, there is a Tassimo coffee machine so you can enjoy coffee and croissant on the terrace. There is a separate laundry room with a washing machine and an additional freezer and a microwave.

There is a large sitting room with comfy sofas, Sky TV and access to the terrace - cool and airy in the heat of the summer and cosy by the woodburner on cooler spring and autumn evenings.

A further reception room is set up with a smaller TV with DVD, table football, books and games.

There is a family bathroom with bath, separate shower & electric towel rail. In addition there is a newly renovated shower room with an electric towel rail.

There is air-con or heating available in the rooms if required.

Renovated early in 2015 - you can see how this lovely house has a welcoming warmth and lots of character.

We welcome enquiries, as we realise it is important to know as much as possible when planning a week or two in France. Please do drop us an email or give us a call if you need more information, a plan of the rooms, further details of the surrounding area. There are plenty of photos on this site, together with a couple of videos showing the unique location of this house and its pool.

The house is situated on the Charente/Dordogne border - a great base for visiting the surrounding region: Bordeaux to the south west, La Rochelle to the north west, Bergerac to the south and also Perigieux and the gorges near Sarlat to the south east.

"Location, location, location! *****

Firstly the house was lovely, had everything you could need. Pool lovely, view lovely, weather....not so good but got better as the week went on. When the sun was out, we spent most of the time outside by the pool, at the table or just looking at the view."

About the Owner

Originally from deepest Devon, we brought up our family in Somerset and continue to live & work here. We stumbled across this old farmhouse in the spring of 2014 and we love to spend time there when we can. The warm stone and fields remind us of home, but the addition of sunflowers, sunshine & an even slower pace of life, makes it a revitalising place to be.

Firstly the house was lovely, had everything you could need. Pool lovely, view lovely, weather....not so good but got better as the week went on. When the sun was out, we spent most of the time outside by the pool, at the table or just looking at the view.

Very easy rental procedure. Fridge broke down while we were there and this was dealt with very quickly by Wendy so we were assured that any problems, would not be a problem!

Explored local restaurants. Without doubt the Cafe des Halles in Montboyer was worth every penny, 16 euros for a three course meal for example and great service. Dog friendly as well.

However if you have the money and need entertaining, go to the Chateau Chalais restaurant. Surreal surroundings, eclectic food and eccentric owner. Fawlty Towers french style.

All in all we had a great time and would recommend a stay at this lovely property.

Lovely house with superb pool and views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks, its really well equipped and incredibly spacious. The view from the heated pool was amazing, spent many an hour in there. The barn/bbq area is lovely we used it every night. The air conditioning in every room is great especially when it gets very hot. There are lovely towns within a few minutes drive and lots to see/do for days out.

I can't think of anything else that you would need, we'll be back at some point......

Owner's Response: Thank you very much indeed - we are so pleased that your stay was special and to know that this house is a lovely place to 'get away from it all' for couples as well as families. Aubeterre is a lovely town nearby and good to hear you went to Brantome with its winding river and chateau. We were delighted to meet you both and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2017.

Great location and good value for money

  • 4 of 5

This property is located in a lovely shallow valley, and is surrounded by countryside making it very private. There is a train line in the valley, however this adds to the charm, it almost looks like a model railway; trains passing do not provide disruption to the peace. Family members spent many hours just resting by the pool in the hot sun, or in the shaded hammock watching the birds, insects and the odd train pass by, and then taking a dip in the private pool. The property was much larger than we expected, and features a further sitting room that was not mentioned at the time of booking within the property description. The kitchen was well equipped, we managed to cook for six people comfortably, albeit a few additional sharp knives and glasses would have been useful on occasion. All the appliances were clean, in good working order and are easy to use. In the pool house, there is a BBQ and a further fridge, and a covered dining area that provides a place for adults to sit, drink, eat and chat while watching over the children’s safety while they play in the pool. The air-conditioning in the bedrooms and kitchen was very welcome during some of the hot nights. The broadband internet is provided via the mobile network over a 3G dongle, this means that it is quite limited – however, this should be expected in rural France. There is Sky TV installed with UK channels, which provided some entertainment and allowed us to keep up to date with current affairs if required. In an outside storage area there are three adult bikes, and two children’s bikes (ages 8 – 14). The brilliant white towels and bed linen provided were crisp and clean; the towels were replaced midway through. No pool towels are provided. The pool was attended to midway through, the water was clear and not heavily chlorinated. Any issues that we raised with the owner were resolved quickly and amicably. We would recommend, with caveats; holidays are a subjective experience, and people have different tastes, standards and requirements for furnishings/amenities, entertainment and activities – for our family the location, privacy and peace and quiet was perfectly relaxing, and we would consider returning. Overall we felt that the property represented good value for money.

Chalalis, the local large town is lovely, and easy to navigate to. We would recommend a visit to Montboyer to the Bar Restaurant, the meals are very good value for money at 13 EUR for 3 courses including wine.

Owner's Response: This positive and very informative review is very much appreciated and we are so pleased you loved the privacy, space and location just as we do when we are there with our families. We continually try to improve the facilities and comfort for our guests, whilst still retaining this property's traditional features. We are very pleased you enjoyed being in this lovely area of France too. Many thanks again and you are of course all very welcome to return in the future.

Amazing property with breathtaking views!

  • 5 of 5

We had such an amazing holiday here, so many thanks to Wendy for letting us stay and for being so helpful in the run up. The property itself was so spacious, it had a lovely tranquil and cool feel about it, and came supplied with everything you could need. We enjoyed many a lazy breakfast or lunch just gazing from the terrace at the amazing view. The pool was really quite warm and we enjoyed the same stunning view whilst relaxing by the pool. Even our 5 year said one of the best things was the view (if we could get her out of the pool long enough to look)!

The boulangerie was another highlight of the holiday, so it was a shame that they were closed for their holiday during the second week of stay. Croissants, bread, sweet treats and white wine were all delicious. My partner enjoyed the early morning stroll down the lane to get the supplies, and I think it made him feel like he had then earnt what he had bought!

We had great days out at Aubeterre (great lunches at La Taverne). The lakes at Brossac and La Jemaye (south of Riberac) continued the swimming theme for our daughter but just provided a change of scene from the pool.

All in all, we had an amazing holiday in an amazing property in a beautiful part of France. Hopefully we shall be lucky enough to return.

Absolutely Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

La Petite Pommeraie is a little gem of a home, nestling in the peace and quiet of the rolling countryside of the Charente, which through sensitive restoration offers an extremely memorable holiday in a tranquil setting. As I write this, over a week after the holiday I can still feel the heat on my back, the rural smells and sounds of a working countryside, but most importantly the memories of a truly relaxing break at LPP.

The property was presented clean and tidy with all the usual modern conveniences available and certainly lived up to its description. The owners were extremely helpful and rapidly responded to any of our questions either before or during our stay. The local amenities are accurately represented both on line and at the property. Whilst only 4 of us used the house it was clear that the property was sufficiently large and well provisioned for up to 8 visitors, careful consideration has been given to ensure that the full range of guests can be accommodated with activities for the young to the old being catered for. Internet is available as is Sky TV, however I might suggest that your holiday should not be defined by the need for those modern conveniences! Close to a selection of market towns, rivers, country walks and local attractions you would have to work hard to get bored. The local restaurant, Le Bistrot des Halles, at Montboyer is superb, both in friendliness, value and quality.

It is really hard to highlight negatives because they simply were not a problem for us however there is a railway line at the bottom of the valley around a kilometre away. It can be heard but we did not find it annoying or intrusive, certainly no more so than the combine harvesters, this is a modern countryside and a nod to modern living can not be avoided.

Would we book again? Most certainly and fully intend to.

From the Owner

Over the last 10 years we have spent most summers in the Charente/Dordogne regions of France as a family. We came to love the climate, the relaxed way of life, the activities available for all of us and the people we met. We also found it was so easy to reach in just a few hours, so that even a week felt like a wonderful long break. After a couple of years of searching, the location of this house, along with its traditional features and lovely views, left us with no doubt it had what we were looking for. It was certainly in need of some TLC ..... but most old French properties do! So we set about renovating it and it is now a spacious gite, a simple and relaxing place to be.

Fresh bread is available from the local bakery only 2km away in Montboyer, as well as in Chalais just 5 kms, which is also great for all groceries, a supermarket and a weekly market. You are also within easy reach of Montmoreau St Cybard, where there is another supermarket.
