Overview

About the property

A beautiful 5 bedroom home that sleeps 10 people in comfort. Stunning Pool!

Dar Ta Nina is just a two minute walk away from Xaghra's beautiful square with its excellent selection of restaurants and bars. This stunning five bedroomed, 300 year old house of character is a haven of peace and tranquility and has been tastefully furnished throughout.

Guests and friends say that the house has the feel and style of a baronial castle due to its central wrought iron chandelier, original thick walls, high ceilings and galleried stairways.

Set over three floors with a private outside pool and garden patio, the house has recently been fully renovated to exacting standards.

The house contains many original features including high ceilings, wooden beams, traditional Gozitan floor tiles and a wealth of stone arches.

The brand new, craftsmen built kitchen includes a polished marble counter top and a larger than standard fridge freezer. A large capacity stainless steel oven with five burner hob offers holiday chefs the opportunity to create their own dining experience. We like to cook and entertain and have therefore provided high grade pots, pans and utensils along with restaurant quality crockery, cutlery and glassware. A full sized built in dishwasher takes care of the washing up!

The handmade dining table will easily seat 10 to 12 guests and is overlooked by a feature lit ancient rubble wall, set within a tall stone arch and has views out to the swimming pool and garden.

The thoughtfully designed garden area is also equipped with a 10/12 seater dining table and chairs along with a brick built barbeque, stainless steel sink and ambient lighting to enjoy the lazy Gozitan evenings.

The garden also features an ancient and functional freshwater well that is covered by a laminated glass top for the safety of our guests.

The lounge area features an L shaped handmade sofa, another three seater sofa and a 42 inch LED TV linked to an IPTV box (Internet) giving access to a host of international TV channels and films. An Xbox (doubles as a DVD player) and a selection of games will keep the youngsters happy.

A traditional huge Gozitan feature fireplace takes pride of place and our winter guests will have the pleasure of being warm and cosy in front of the Norwegian Jotul log burning stove.

At the rear of the house our guests will find the ground floor double bedroom and next to that an open plan wetroom and toilet with rainfall shower. This room also accomodates the very latest Samsung, eco friendly washing machine

.

The first floor is accessed by the magnificent marble and steel staircase which in turn leads to the central atrium gallery overlooking the lounge.

Three double bedrooms and the family bathroom are accessed from the gallery along with the steel and marble spiral staircase that leads to the third floor open plan master bedroom suite.

Bedrooms:

The bedroom is equipped with airconditioning.

About Craig & Andrea

We are a married couple who both come from Manchester, but now live and work in Cheshire in the UK. We have two sons, one in his late teens and one in his mid 20's.

Craig & Andrea purchased this villa in 2015

Why Craig & Andrea chose Xaghra

We fell in love with Gozo on our first visit to the island in 2013 and decided to return again in the following summer of 2014. We had no real intention of buying a house, but circumstances and fate led us to meet a local estate agent (Nick P).

Nick listened to what we liked and what we didnt like when it comes to houses and after seeing almost every house on the island that possibly fitted the bill, we resigned ourselves to the fact that what we wanted didnt really exist.

We then recieved a call from Nick asking us to meet him in Xaghra and to have an open mind......

We were led down a small cul de sac, described as an alley by the Gozitans to a dramatic shell of a building. The house had last been lived in around 40 years ago and had originally been built around 300 years ago. The original property had been divided in two and then both properties had undergone a huge transformation by building a large, but seamless and sympathetic extension onto the rear of both.

Nick introduced us to the builder and owner, Charlie A, the islands master Stonemason and we then took the grand tour of the property and Charlie described the work that had been carried out and also his vision of how the house would look when finally completed. We were hooked!

Hands were shaken and a price agreed for both the shell, but more importantly for Charlie to complete the work and deliver our dream home.

The paperwork and finances were in place by the winter of 2014 and in early 2015 Gozo's finest craftsmen were on the job. The guys all worked like trojans and delivered to us our beautiful and unique Gozitan home.

What makes this villa unique

The house really is quite a grand affair and comes with bags of history.

Its last owner occupier was Nina and the house had been within her family for many generations and was at one time the home and workplace of the gentleman who brought the first Carrozin (horse drawn cabs) to the island of Gozo. (research ongoing) Nina lived in the house alone as an old lady and is remembered fondly by the locals who were children at the time. The house had no running water and Nina had to draw water from the well next to the front door (no mean feat when you look at the depth!) She also cooked on an open fire and the soot blackened stone is still in place between the huge stone arches.

The house is now transformed and yet still retains many of it's orginal features. It's thick and imposing stone walls and high ceilings and arches, along with the central atrium lounge and galleried staircase give the whole property the feeling of a grand baronial hall.

The garden now has a unique swimming pool. The pool is fed by the recirculating waterfall and then cascades over the lowered edge giving a wonderful, relaxing sound of flowing water.

The roof terrace at the rear of the house has distant views over the channel and onwards to Malta, whilst the front terrace has distant views towards Victoria and the Citadel and also the hills of Zebugg.

A wonderful place to spend a relaxing evening with family and friends.

A well-renovated and well-equipped house close-by

  • 5 of 5

The house was the venue for a family holiday including a 4 year-old. The front area around the swimming pool was the focal point of our stay and made for a safe environment to watch children at play. This area had a barbecue as well as loungers, tables, and chairs. Other outside areas including two of the main (top) bedroom provided relaxing areas to escape from the rest of the family as well as being eminently suitable for evening drinks. We have been regular visitors to Gozo over the years and Xaghra is now our destination of choice, with this being the best situated house we have stayed in, only a couple of minutes from the restaurants and bars of the main square whilst in a quiet location.

Great house, great location.

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 2 families - 10 in total. There was enough sleeping space in the house and more than enough room to accommodate us. Several terraces and a great sun terrace. Also the outdoor area with the pool was heavily used! The house was equipped with all we needed and we were well looked after by the housekeeper who lives next door. A short walk to the lovely town square with various eateries and bars. Grocers and supermarkets in easy walking distance too. Also the Victory Club just outside the square was a great find! Good bus service to get around the island and good value. Also eating and drinking out very reasonable in terms of cost compared to other places we have been to. Would absolutely recommend a stay here. Would also recommend a boat trip round the island with stops to allow swimming in the sea part of the trip. Thank you Craig and Andrea for everything including all the useful information you sent us. Two things to help anyone else staying - take anti mosquito spray to use at night - that should keep the mozzies away - they don't make a noise so you don't know they are around! And the bakery van comes round at around 9am in the morning with a beep of the horn.

Perfect town house in a wonderful Gozo village

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful lazy holiday here in July making full use of the pool, beautiful house and stunning roof terraces! The excellent house-keeper, Rita, was there next door all week to assist with any queries we had and we found the house to be extremely well equipped. We will be returning!

A stunning house on Beautiful Island!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first Visit to the lovely Island of Gozo and it far exceeded expectations, starting with this beautiful 3 storey house that has been renovated to an exceptional standard, with modern features and comforts, whilst maintaining many of its original features, from the grand chandeliers to the stone fireplaces and original beams and stonework.

The kitchen is superbly equipped and modern, with a dining area that can hold a banquet for many. All the bedrooms are large and have character with the master suite having a roof top balcony with stunning views.

The garden forecourt has a beautiful pool and waterfall, with outdoor cooking facilities. It is the attention to detail and high spec furnishings and fittings that make staying here so enjoyable!

There are very good restaurants and bars a 30 second walk away in the main square, and the island itself has many beautiful villages and coastal areas to explore!

We will return and can highly recommend Dar Ta Nina

It was a short walk to the town square in Xaghra which has several good restaurants as well as small markets. Gozo is very relaxed. Malta is a short ferry away.

Wonderful Gozo

  • 5 of 5

First of all, this is the most beautiful place we've ever stayed in on a holiday. You walk down a short side street and open doors to a stunning 3 storey facade of Gozitan history. The courtyard you are then stood in resonates to the sound of the pool overflowing next to you. You just want to dump your bags and slide in. Even in January!!! The wow factor continues when you walk in to the house; open plan downstairs with kitchen, dining room an lounge with amazing cast iron chandelier hanging from the top floor. An original stone wall really makes you feel like you're walking in to history. Whoever has renovated this house has a real feel for originality with a classic touch. We had great difficulty deciding which bedroom to have as they're all so individual, but in the end we put our foot down and insisted on the 3rd floor room with balcony and roof terrace, while our younger friends argued over the other beautiful rooms. You are a 30 second walk from xaghra square where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. This being January it was pretty quiet but the Oleander restaurant was busy and is a thing of beauty if you like your food; octopus starter and ribeye steak were stunning and one of the best meals we've ever had, thank you Martin and Barry, our hosts! The island is full of history, mythology and beauty as well as an interesting capital (Victoria/Rabat) which feels quite colonial. You can even have a game of snooker with the locals so I might bring my cue next time! As you drive around the island you see a beautiful church and square, great bars, restaurants and friendly people every 5 minutes. Eventually you come back to a beautiful house that feels just like home. We loved it and we will be back to Dar Ta Nina. Grazzi Gozo!!

The island of Gozo is one of the Mediterranean's best kept secrets and is known as Malta's "little sister".

The Gozitan people are friendly, warm and welcoming and will go out of their way to help you if they can. English is the second language of the islands and is spoken by the vast majority of Gozitans.

The island is steeped in history and is reputedly the home of the nymph Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. You may well fall under her magical spell.

The sea's around the island are crystal clear and a number of scuba diving schools can be found dotted around the coastal villages.

Bicycle hire is available from the nearby village of Marsalforn or Gozo's capital Victoria. Both are just a short journey away by bus or car.

The island is perfectly suited to walkers and cyclists who enjoy a little off road adventure. Gozo is quite hilly and this can be a struggle for the inexperienced mountain biker especially in the hot summer months.

Gozo is a sea swimmers paradise with hidden, but accessable coves dotted around the island. The burnt orange beach at Ramla bay is the nearest swimming spot and is spectacular in its beauty. It's around a 30 minute walk down hill and probably an hour to walk back to the house. However it's a five to ten minute trip in a car and is also served by the excellent bus service.

The capital of Gozo is Victoria known locally as Rabat and is well worth a visit.

The Cittadella or Citadel is the old fortified city within Victoria and has been the subject of recent renovations and you will easily spend the best part of a day wandering around it's tiny streets and alleys and visiting the interactive museum. It's worth noting that the highy skilled Stonemason's company that renovated the magnificent entrance arch carried out all of the renovations to Dar Ta Nina.

Xaghra

Dar Ta Nina is located in the popular village of Xaghra and its just a short walk (less than 2 minutes) into the lovely village square with it's magnificent parish church and a host of superb restaurants and bars.

The local shops include three excellent butchers and two general grocery stores offering fresh local bread and vegetables. The square is also visited by the mobile fishmongers and greengrocers offering the very best in local, fresh produce.

International and local newspapers are available at the quaint little petrol station in the corner of the square.

HSBC and Bank of Valletta both have cash machines (ATM's) located in the square.

A pharmacy service is also available just off the main square.

Xaghra is possibly the earliest inhabited part of Gozo, being home to the Ggantija megalithic temples and the Xaghra Stone Circle. Both of these sites pre date the Pyramids and Stonehenge!!

Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave are both natural underground features and are all just a short ten minute stroll away from the house. They really are well worth a visit.

The village is also well served by the islands excellent bus service.
