About Abi & Jonathon

We're Jon and Abi from Surrey, along with spending time with our two beautiful girls, we like travelling and sports.

Over the years we have visited numerous holiday homes throughout the UK and were often frustrated by one thing or another. Such as it extra costs for bed linen, poor facilities for children, having to do meter readings and pay extra for electricity and gas, slow return of deposit, small TV, poor broadband and much more!

We believe that a holiday home the holiday should start as soon as you arrive, without having to worry about making up beds and bringing towels with you!

So at Alder Barn we have taken the best of what we have experienced at various different places and omitted the worst, creating a holiday home that we would want as a family:

- Relax when you arrive with a cup of tea or coffee, a packet of biscuits and a plum loaf.

- All the beds are made and towels and mini toiletries provided.

We have also provided the modern technology that all of us would now expect at home with good wireless broadband and a large 50' flat screen smart TV in the lounge with lots of films and kids channels.

Not forgetting of course a decent sized fridge freezer in which you can fit all your food!

Abi & Jonathon purchased this barn in 2006

Why Abi & Jonathon chose Hertfordshire

Alder Barn is a property that we let for a number of years as a standard tenanted property. Though visiting Ashwell two years ago we immediately saw it as the perfect holiday home.

The barn itself is big, full of character and perfect for groups of friends or families. The accommodation is also both flexible with good sized bedrooms, and a logical layout with all bedrooms on the first floor.

Then of course there is Ashwell, which is just a lovely place to relax and spend time; just to stroll around the village enjoying the historic and beautiful buildings, or walking through the springs and in the footpaths surrounding the village.

There are some lovely pubs here to spend the evening which also offer a great range of food. The Rose & Crown have nights when they do fish and chips and stone baked pizzas to eat in or take away. The Three Tuns is a lovely gastro pub and the Bushell & Strike is newly refurbished and offers a great menu.

There is Days the original Ashwell Bakery, who offer fresh bread, cakes, sandwiches and pasties. Rhubarb & Mustard - Purveyors of Fine Things - and they really are! Offering gourmet coffee to drink in or take away, fine roast coffee beans, speciality foods, sauces, condiments and gifts. Crumps the butchers, again, an age old institution in the village - a traditional family butchers, who also have a deli selection of cheeses, some fruit and vegetables, eggs and much more. Then we also have the Ashwell Village Stores, a small, but well stocked mini supermarket. Also, the Ashwell Pharmacy, stocking a good range of cosmetic and medicinal items, as well as a pharmacy counter service.

Plus within 30 minutes of Ashwell you are simply spoilt for choice of things to do, from country houses (the National Trust have 25 properties within 20 miles), zoos, golf courses, museums and more. Plus for visiting London a train service from the local station that gets you quickly into central London.

What makes this barn unique

We just love the open space, both inside the barn and outside. The open plan layout of the barn means that it always feel light and airy, the large kitchen means that you're not fighting for space to cook or make a cup of tea. The barn also effectively has no neighbours - in as much as each side is a small business unit, so you have absolute quiet in the evening, great for getting kids off to sleep - as there are no loud TVs or music. But on the flip side, if you want to watch a film with the sound up louder, you don't have to worry about disturbing people either!

We thought particularly hard about all the things that have made our stays good in other places (and the things that haven't), so we have a really well stocked kitchen, with everything we could think of; including a large full sized fridge freezer, a washing machine and tumble dryer (essential with young kids who can go through a wardrobe of clothes in two days!), microwave, decent cooker, lots of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. A good TV and film service, with WIFI for the techy among us. A cupboard with some books, toys and games - so you don't have to bring the kitchen sink and for anyone travelling with little ones; a travel cot, high chair and toilet step - yes, we can remember having the car packed to the roof with all this stuff!

Also, we love the village, the first thing our girls want to do is to unpack their things and get to Days the bakers to make sure that they don't miss out on the chocolate iced doughnuts for lunch. Then get down to the spring for a paddle in their wellies!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed at Alder barn myself, husband, sons, my mum and dad, we went down from Scotland for my bother in law's funeral it was great we could all stay together. It is a great place to stay plenty of room for all very sad time because of what we were there for but would go back again for a break very nice parking is available but because of where it is you have a hairdresser, and other office s there sometimes parking was a little difficult other then that all very good would use it again.

Alder Barn is centrally located in the historic and picturesque village of Ashwell.

It is a truly beautiful village with Tudor and Georgian houses, some dating back to the 1300’s; which have given rise to comments that “Ashwell looks like it came off a film set”.

Dominating Ashwell’s skyline is the famous tower of St Mary’s Church which was built in the 14th Century.

Surrounded by rolling English countryside there is plenty to see and do; with three local English pubs all serving excellent food; Ashwell Museum to find out some of the fascinating history; plus Ashwell Springs which is a source for the River Cam (which flows through Cambridge). In addition to splashing around in the springs there is a good playground for the children, plus sports fields.

There are some lovely independent shops, such as Crumps the Butchers with its locally sourced meat, Days Bakery with fresh bread and pastries every day; plus Rhubard & Mustard Coffee Shop, a pharmacy, Post Office, village store, beauty salon and not to mention an Indian Takeaway.

There are lots of lovely walks that go around Ashwell into the countryside, and there are lots of places to visit closeby; such as the Wimpole Estate manor house and farm which is only 20 minutes’ drive and has lots to see and do for adults and children alike.

Only 10 minutes’ drive away is the pretty market town of Baldock with its famous market square. Here you have a large choice of pubs, bars, restaurants, takeaways and more. In Baldock you also have a huge 24 hour Tesco’s supermarket which should take care of nearly all your shopping needs.

Ten minutes drive in the other direction are the Baldock Services, just as you come off of the A1M. These 24 hour services, have petrol, ATMs and many shops and restaurants.

Ashwell is the perfect countryside base either to relax and stay ‘close to home’, or via road or train explore further afield. Cambridge is only 30 minutes by car and we are only 10 minutes from Ashwell and Morden Station; where you can head south on the train, with London Kings Cross is only 40 minutes away!

Within 45 minutes’ drive from Ashwell there are scores of things to do, some of these are listed below:

- Cambridge is only 30 minutes drive

- Harry Potter World (only 45 minutes drive)

- Bletchley Park (50 minutes)

We just love the open space, both inside the barn and outside. The open plan layout of the barn means that it always feel light and airy, the large kitchen means that you're not fighting for space to cook or make a cup of tea.
