Newly restored, this expansive 18th century home features a bowered dining patio, private pool and 3 gorgeous suntrap terraces.

Casa da Luz is a step away from the Igreja Matriz church, making Olhão’s famous seafront markets but a short stroll away. A friendly ferry or water taxi ride transports you from the esplanade to the dreamy, timeless islands of Culatra and Armona where peace, beaches and sea breezes are yours for the asking. Most of our guests do without a car.

The ground floor features a huge food lover’s kitchen which opens out onto the honeysuckle-planted patio and to the enormous vaulted living area with its rustic table for 16, and its custom-built sofa from where all the tribe can hang out and enjoy the sound system.

There’s also a guest loo and an en-suite bedroom on this floor.

Upstairs finds two more lovely en-suite bedrooms and a separate utility room. Step onto the terrace and there’s another en-suite bedroom, a pair of sun loungers and the small pool with its soothing water cascade. Above this floor there’s another suntrap terrace with bench seating; it runs the length of the house. Stairs tiled with reclaimed Santa Caterina terracotta lead to the shaded top terrace, which offers both soaring views over Olhão to the sea and very comfy wraparound loungers for you take in (and shoot!) the breeze.

Casa da Luz has been designed to take best advantage of both Olhão’s stunning sunshine and her welcome sea breezes. There’s also underfloor heating (and fibre optic broadband wi-fi) throughout the house, making it cosy, comfortable and practical all year round

Olhão is a salty, atmospheric, authentic fishing town. One of the many joys of being here is that you don't need a car: everything from the esplanade to the many local restaurants, from the stunning fresh produce and fish markets to the well-stocked supermarket are all a short stroll away. Luckily, the town hasn't been manicured or sanitised: real people live here, and tourists are a small minority. You come here to live life at the Algarvian pace, when time is elastic, and measured in the tides. At low tide, the clam beds for miles around are revealed, and the townspeople go out to dig them. What with the the clams (Olhão produces almost all of Portugal's clams) and the thriving fishing port, we believe this to be perhaps the finest place in Europe to eat fresh seafood and fish.

The climate helps! Olhão has more sunny days than almost anywhere else in Europe. It does rain, but never for long, and the winter months are wonderfully mild, with their welcome doses of bright, warm sunshine.

If you like slightly care-worn, still-beautiful architecture, Olhão's the place for you. There are any amount of once-glamorous homes just begging to be sensitively restored, and traditional cobbled streets, and a lovely traffic-free medina for you to lose yourself in.

If you love long, clean, quiet beaches, the ferry or water taxi will swish you over to the islands of Armona (30/5 minutes) or Culatra (55/10 minutes) where a saunter through these quiet islands, then along their boardwalks delivers you to stunning, uncommercialised beaches where the water is wonderfully tonic and space abounds.

The train will trundle you along the coast either to the Spanish border (spot the flamingos along the way) or to Lagos at the other end of the Algarve. If you have a car, the hills behind Olhão are a pleasure to explore: there are huge views, local tabernas and perfect peace to be discovered. Spain is about a 30 minute drive away.
