Overview

About the property

Casentino house, private pool & gardens.. Sleeps 4/5 people. Pets very welcome

Casa Giardino is in the very small village of Spalanni in the "secret" valley known as the Casentino and situated 50 km (28 Miles) east of Florence. There are ancient stone cottages, nestling above the larger villages of Strada di Casentino and Castel San Niccolo. Spalanni originated within the historical confines of a 13th Century convent and the unique chapel is open to visitors through the summer.

We enjoy spectacular views across the valley and the hills beyond. There is a nearby grocery shop selling local produce but a wider range of local shops are to be found in Strada only five minutes away by car. There are two banks with ATM; the inspiring bakery also has a deliciously stocked delicatessen and grocery sections; the butcher who is a specialist in the Casentino steak; vegetable and fruit shops; restaurants and bars; dry cleaner and newsagents etc.

The town of Bibbiena is about 20 minutes drive and Arezzo, which is the provincial capital, is less than one hour’s drive away.

The house is well placed to simply settle into the pace of calm rural life but also a perfect base to explore the great treasures of Tuscany. Visits to Florence, Chianti, Sienna, Cortona and even Rome can be reached by train from Arezzo in an hour.

This large house has been extensively restored and refurbished to a very high standard whilst maintaining authenticity and atmosphere. The house is ideal for families with children of all ages and the 1.5m deep pool is a welcome attraction. Dogs are very welcome here too and the gardens are safely enclosed.

The fitted kitchen is generously equipped for those who love cooking. The cooker has four gas rings and a large grill and electric oven and there is also a microwave and fridge/freezer.

It is great to sample the local Tuscan food in the numerous superb local restaurants but try the fabulous local produce to create special Tuscan dishes of your own and relax under the cooling shade of the grapevine terrace or enjoy the grand views on your own beautiful and private balcony.

There are two double bedrooms within Casa Giardino, the second bedroom can be configured into a double or twin bedded room. We can also accommodate a 5th person and the bed will be set upstairs in the sitting room.

The first floor sitting room is comfortable and newly refurbished, with a large television and a DVD player. We supply a good selection of DVDs and books for our guest’s enjoyment.

The house combines a sense of history with the added convenience of modern living. The bright and sunny bathroom at the front of the house is fitted with shower, basin, toilet and bidet. We supply plenty of bathroom towels and also extra towels for use around the pool.

The property has full central heating for the colder months and in the dining room there is an efficient wood burner in a traditional Tuscan fireplace. Logs are plentiful.

We have unlimited WIFI and there is free access available in Strada and at the local bars and restaurants.

Outside we enjoy large and beautiful private gardens, a large 8x5m and 1.5m deep swimming pool and sun terraces for your own private use. Guests returning after a long hot day of sightseeing, can dip into the refreshing sun warmed pool. It is wonderful to relax in the peaceful garden and laze the day away in the sunshine or under the shade of our fig tree, olive trees, or in the cool ambiance of our house.

In the gardens there are interesting features and aromatic herbs and trees: fig, pear, cherry, plum, cherry and olive trees and a canopy of grapevines. During 2016, we planted two new Cherry trees for future generations to enjoy. When in season, the fruit and garden herbs are plentiful and there for our guests to enjoy in abundance.....July for the cherries....July and August for plums and pears and later in August and September the wonderful figs are ripe and eating them straight off the tree when warmed by the sun is simply amazing. Towards the end of the year there are also the walnuts to enjoy.

About Richard

It is with great excitement that this wonderful old house is being offered under new circumstances. Richard and I look forward to welcoming you to our summer home, under the beautiful Tuscan skies in the amazingly, cultural and historical Casentino valley which surrounds us. During the summer months we live at the property adjoining, where we have our own entrance and garden but we are available to you for help and assistance but without intrusion into your privacy.

Richard purchased this house in 2006

Why Richard chose Province of Arezzo

The house is strikingly and is a timeless property in an elevated position enjoying long hours of sunshine. The Casentino is a narrow valley between the Apennine ridge and the massif of the Pratomagno. The valley floor is flown by the river Arno and mainly farmlands. It has many many traditional local Festivals throughout the year. You will really enjoy the experiences and different cultures that you become a part of.

Beautiful memories are easily be made here and at night the sounds of the cicades and the huge dark starry skies will bring you sheer wonderment. Look out you may see a shooting star!

Come to stay in June to experience, in our gardens, the splendid nightly show of the Fireflies. You will surely compare it to Christmas, as you are reminded of the twinkling lights on your festive tree when you watch the tiny fireflies performing their light show right there in front of you! Lucky you if you can capture a photograph of one to see just how small they are!

What makes this house unique

The complete tranquillity and natural, rural magnificence of Spalanni, alongside the historical nature of the entire "secret valley" known as the Casentino, immediately awaits you. Relatively nearby are Florence, Chianti, Cortona, Sienna and even Rome; and all within reach of Casa Giardino as a single day trip.

Tuscany enjoys a mild climate in spring and autumn with temperatures rarely going below 20 degrees which makes it perfect for visiting at the beginning or end of the season too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came across this website by chance and we have found somewhere that we will definitely be returning to.

Our hosts were on hand to guide us through the Casentino area with suggestions which helped us to create a brilliant holiday. There was a very generous welcome pack awaiting us and we found the house to be very well kept, with crisp clean linen in the bedrooms and a well stocked kitchen. The garden is lovely and the pool is cleaned daily by Richard. There are so many little places to visit in the area that are charming and totally unspoilt by tourism. We especially liked spending time in Strada in Castel Saint Niccolò by the cool waters on the riverside and then enjoying coffee and cake in Lanini's in the Piazza.

There are principally 3 airports which are convenient for Casa Giardino in Castel San Niccolo. Pisa, Bologna and Florence. Forli is reasonable too. There are car hire agencies at all the airports but it may be best to book in advance and have a car waiting for you.

Beautiful , is just like the photos

Beautiful villa, stunning views, gorgeous secluded pool. The owners were on hand if we needed anything. A perfect get away. Only issue was no air con or fans and we went in a heat wave !

A lovely, well equipped house in an extremely beautiful part of the world.

  • 5 of 5

Casa Giardino is a lovely house in a tiny hilltop village in the heart of rural Tuscany. The house itself is very tastefully decorated and extremely well equipped. There was nothing we needed. There were even some essential food items (and prosecco) in the fridge for when we arrived, which was a godsend as the supermarket had closed. The views from the balcony were beautiful and the location very peaceful. The pool was perfect for us and our children and was well used every day. There were plenty of loungers and towels available as well as plastic glasses and crockery for use around the poolside. Richard, the owner could not have been more helpful, offering advice on places to visit, best supermarket, where to go and eat etc and even accompanied us on some of our evenings out which was most enjoyable. We feel like we made a friend and hope that we can one day return again to stay in that beautiful house.

Lovely peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Giardino. It is situated in a very peaceful spot, perfect as a place to unwind but also good as a start point for exploring the area. You do need a car to stay here but I'd imagine that would be taken as read. The property has everything needed to cook full meals (which we did) and various options of where to eat them. There are also some cracking delis nearby from which to source excellent ingredients. Richard was very helpful throughout our stay - I would recommend Casa Giardino to anyone looking for a laid back stay in the heart of rural Tuscany.

Lovely house in a lovely setting with lovely hosts.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we booked our stay, we were made to feel welcome. Our hosts kept in touch with us on the run up and made us feel very welcome when we arrived and all through our stay. The house has nice gardens with plenty of different areas to use and feels very private. Inside the house is clean, spacious and welcoming with everything you'd need.

The kids loved the pool, which was big and deep enough for us all to use at the same time. The location is a perfect base for days out exploring other places either by car or train.

It is in a fairly remote setting - which we loved. If you're looking for infinity pools and swanky night clubs, perhaps this isn't the one for you... but we would happily recommend this property to our friends and family. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much this great review! We were so pleased to welcome you here after your long drive. You were lovely guests and it was wonderful to hear the enjoyment that you and your family had in and around our pool. To us there is nothing more beautiful than the joy and laughter of children having fun. We were very glad that you enjoyed all your visits to the ancient villages in the Casentino and especially glad that you timed your visit to Florence well and managed to escape the thunderstorm and rainy day that you left behind for us! It'a great that you will recommend us to your friends and family and it would be a pleasure to meet you all again soon. Poppy

Charming and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Giardino. The house has been updated in an Italian style and we found it exceptionally clean. The house has new bedding and all the kitchen items you would ever require.

The outside is a peaceful oasis with fruit trees and a beautiful terrace for dining. The pool was also clean and very well maintained with toys to entertain the children.

We found there was a lot to do in the area, yet really enjoyed getting away from the crowds and relaxing at the house too.

I highly recommend a week or two at this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind observations and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay once again in our beautiful old house and your children were a joy. It was so lovely to hear your children playing happily. Our discussions of the Casentino were interesting and we were glad to be able to help you to discover the lesser known places to explore. We do try to achieve exceptional standards here and your 5* review is well received. Poppy and Richard

An excellent stay

  • 4 of 5

Casa Giardino is a comfortable, spotlessly clean and well-equipped holiday stay and our hosts, who live next door, could not have been more friendly or helpful (without being at all intrusive). The Casentino area and the local villages are a delight. The only small criticisms we would have are a) that there was nowhere comfortable to sit by the pool (there were wooden loungers with very thin cushions - we used our own camping chairs and b) that the pool does feel as if it is in the host's garden and is not really totally private (a low hedge separated the pool area from our hosts house a few metres away). If these points are not a problem then Casa Giardino is an excellent stay. The welcome is warm and the welcome package is very generous - and inside the house the rooms are very thoughtfully equipped, far more so than the average rental property.

Owner's Response: Dear Peter As the first guests of the 2016 season, we are very grateful for your kind comments and helpful review. It was a pleasure for us to welcome you here. However, we are disappointed that you did not make the comment about the pool seating arrangements to us during your staying here in Casa Giardino as we could have very quickly rectified that issue for you. Indeed more comfortable furniture and cushions have already been added around the pool since your holiday. Privacy is paramount to us and we regret that you think it was compromised. The pool is on the other side of the hedging which separates the owners garden. It is dense, 8 metres long and more than 2 metres tall and the length was extended during the Spring of 2016, as more hedging was planted. We wish you well for your future trips abroad and the rest of the summer in the UK. Ciao! Poppy and Richard Gosmore
