Spacious, well equipped house, location may not suit everyone

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at Villa Diana for two weeks in August; our party comprised two adults, and four teenagers aged 13 - 21. On arrival we were met by Valentina and her daughter Viola, who were friendly and helpful. The main living area is enormous, but it was necessary to have the shutters closed in order to avoid the heat, so it was dark, and the furniture unwelcoming. If you have a large party it may be a more convivial space. The snug at the back of the house was more welcoming, however, the TV was not working.

The four bedrooms are spacious, and each has its own shower room. Please note that three of the bedrooms have air conditioning, the fourth has an electric ceiling fan. This room is significantly hotter than the others for obvious reasons, so worth thinking about who (if anyone) will have this room in advance. I may be stating the obvious but it is very hot in Sicily! During our first week the temperature hit 40 degrees. Be prepared to have a late (or very early!) start - at very hot times it really is not worth trying to walk around outside until late afternoon. The house is often very hot downstairs.

There is a large garden with several places to sit and two umbrellas. It would be good to have more than one sun lounger.

There are lovely places to visit; we would recommend: Scoglitti beach (55 mins drive), Villa Romana di Casale (45 mins drive), Siracusa (2 hrs 30 mins drive), Aidone (visit the museum café for fantastic arancini al forno, pizza, cakes and gelato) and Morgantina (both just under an hour's drive), the nature reserve and beach at Torre Salsa, and the steps and public park in Caltagirone (there is a café where you can sit and have drinks and snacks in the park). Be prepared for a driving style quite different to the UK, anything goes so expect the unexpected!

The villa is on a busy road and quite a way out of the main centre, so it is advisable to drive if you want to visit a restaurant. It is not a very nice area, so you wouldn't want to walk. We had good food at Mamadina (mainly pizzas but reasonable priced, most at 6/7 euros) and La Piazzetta (very friendly restaurant, lovely home style Italian food). Most people do not speak English so it's a good idea to have some Italian phrases prepared for the basics, eg. how to order food/drink.

In short, we feel that this villa is good for a large group who don't mind driving to visit places of interest and restaurants.

Beautiful and spacious

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of five co workers staying at this beautiful villa. We were there for a project that lasted six weeks and didn't want to be crammed into a hotel for the entire trip. So we all stayed here and had the whole place to ourselves. It was great!

The villa definitely lived up to the pictures. Everything was absolutely beautiful. The layout was perfect for each of us to have our own space and not feel like we were in each other's hair. The rooms and showers were very nice and clean. It was a little chilly in the house and we were forewarned before we booked that it would be cold. (We stayed Feb. 2 through March 14). Each room is equipped with an AC/ heating unit which helped on the colder evenings. There is a fire place in the main family room and a lot of fire wood available in the wood shed outside to keep the fire going.

Since we were there for business WiFi was definitely needed for our stay and the WiFi worked great! Even upstairs the signal was very strong. It never went out or slowed things down.

The kitchen is great. We did a lot of cooking there. There weren't a lot of pots or pans but we made do with what was available.

The caretakers of the property were fantastic. If we needed anything they would immediately respond. Very friendly and sweet ladies.

Restaurants and grocery stores were a little difficult to find at first but once we got the hang of the town it was easy to navigate. Keep in mind that most of these places close from about 1-6/7. We were not aware of this and were starving when we first arrived because everything was closed until dinner time.

We had very minor complaints about the villa during our stay. The furniture in the main family room was not very comfortable at all. Very old and worn down. The furniture in the office area was decent but not enough seating to gather around the only TV in the house. Getting in and out of the gate to the main road was a big pain. The stone walls connecting to the gate makes it very difficult to see traffic approaching. There are mirrors on the opposite side of the road to help assist but sometimes those didn't really make a difference.

Bottom line, stay here!! You will not be disappointed. I hope to return here again one day. Hopefully during the summer so I can experience the beautiful gardens.

Una experiencia inolvidable¡¡¡

  • 5 of 5

Amazing villa & garden

  • 5 of 5

The pictures convinced us to book the villa. And the pictures were right! What a really amazing villa. It is indeed aristocratic, huge and very special.

We stayed in the villa for 6 nights with 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 1 teenager (yes, the wifi worked just fine). We enjoyed the frescoed living room (or ball room if you please), the very good equipped kitchen and the grand garden. Very good to have a bathroom in every sleeping room. And there was a washing machine as well (although not mentioned).

The owners of the villa welcomed us with wine, oil and basil. We received a rundown of the house and were good to temporarily take over the villa. Additional questions were quickly answered via phone or whatsapp. There is a supermarket and bakery nearby (Deco, Vialle de Europa) and an restaurant a few doors down.

Best of all, from Caltagirone you are centrally based to do, if you like, excursions to Agrigento, Villa de Casalle, Syracuse/Ortiga, Noto, Ragusa and Catania or the Etna. You are in the middle of the circle.

So, if you like something special, not mainstream, not in the middle of tourist packed villages we advice this villa.

The highlight of Caltagirone is the 142 steps of the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte that connect the lower town with the older upper town. The last two weeks of May the steps are home to the 'Infiorita', a flower festival.
