2 bedroom, 200 year old barn conversion, sleeping 4/5, 1 mike from Bantham beach, awarded best in UK and 6th best in Europe by Lonely Planet. Newly furnished throughout, with electric central heating and log burner. Ideal for families or couples. Newly fitted kitchen (from November 2014) / dining room, including washing

machine, tumble dryer, dish washer, microwave, fridge and separate freezer. Spacious living room. Master bedroom, second bedroom with twin beds, plus 'z bed' suitable for a child. Bathroom, with bath and shower. Small garden, set within larger communal grounds, adjacent to a stream and a farm with alpacas, sheep, horses. Barbecue, picnic table. Separate shed, useful for additional storage.

About David and Mary Horne

My wife and I have recently retired. We live in a small village called Littlewick Green, near Maidenhead, in Berkshire. It is the archetypal English village, with a cricket pitch, a church and a pub. We have lived there for 23 years; prior to that, we lived in Ealing, in West London. We have two children, both in their twenties. We both enjoy walking, and exploring beautiful countryside.

Why David and Mary Horne chose South Hams

I first discovered Bantham and Thurlestone during a golf trip to the South Hams some 20 years ago, and immediately fell in love with it. It is designated as an 'area of outstanding natural beauty', which means that there are extremely strict regulations regarding planning permission for development. Bantham village is part of a larger estate, which is privately owned by people who are determined to ensure that the beauty of the location is maintained.

When we retired, my wife and I decided that we would like to buy a holiday home in the area. We were particularly interested in converted barns, so were delighted when one came onto the market. We immediately fell in love with the Coach House, and the beautiful, secluded and peaceful valley in which it is situated, and have taken great pleasure in restoring the property since we bought it in June.

A beautiful homely place to stay on our first trip to Devon

We fell in love with this property as soon as we stepped through the door. The owners answered all questions prior to our trip and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.

Yes the barn was off the beaten track, hidden down a steep hill but we loved this about it and the views surrounding it. It was quiet and peaceful and the property itself was clean and tastefully done. The beds were also incredibly comfortable! We were fortunate enough to get a bit of sun so enjoyed the sunshine on the bench at the front of the barn. A great size for 4 university friends catching up over a long weekend, and we appreciated the lovely bottle of wine from David & Mary which was a very generous touch!

We also highly recommend a visit to Hope Cove, a beautiful village and beach but be careful on the tight roads, you can't be too precious with your car around the area populated with tractors and large vans!

Property lovely as described, but outside space and lacking information

You can't fault the the property itself, I would rate it 5 star, it was lovely, clean, comfortable and had everything you could possibly need inside and a lovely bottle of wine to welcome you. But 2 star for the description of outside which was economical about the facts of the location and other important information. It says its in a secluded valley, but not at the bottom of the valley and you absolutely need a car to do anything at all. It is not suitable for walkers. Although it says it is 1 mile from the beach it does not say that it is not really walkable. There are no footpaths from the properly, but a local farmer said we could walk through his field and another owners' field to get to the public footpath. It takes an hour or more to walk to the beach. You have to be very fit to climb to the top of the valley. The road only fits a car and is winding and the beach road is the same; its not really safe to walk. If you do take the car to the beach it costs £6 to park if you arrive in the morning and £3.50 after 3pm, though that’s not the owner's problem. There was no useful information, not even a hand drawn map of how to walk anywhere from the property. The property is fantastic for surfers and those who want a base in the area to drive out to other places. The description says small garden which is shown in the photograph, set within larger communal grounds, but there is no information about these communal grounds. Each property (6 others) has its own small garden; we didn't find any communal gardens that you could walk in (though the grounds were beautiful to look at and the wildlife magnificent) and the farm is not accessible; its private. They did not say there is no phone signal in the description, you find this out when you arrive from their information booklet. You can get a signal at the top of the valley (near the bins) so if your partner is the driver and taken ill in the night, you would have to walk 20 minutes uphill to get a phone signal. Other places we have stayed without signal have a landline for emergency calls only. They were economical with the description so not to put people off. The local pub you have to drive to unless you want that 1 hour uphill walk and if you drive then you can't have a drink. This property is not really suitable for people who don't want to have to drive everywhere. We were disappointed as we are walkers. We had a lovely holiday, but we had to drive everywhere.

Owner's Response: In response to some of the criticisms raised, we would like to make the following points: - The website states very clearly (under Nearby Places) that a car is necessary. Our recommendation is to drive to the coast (e.g. Thurlestone has a free car park) and to walk from there. - Maps and tourist information are available in the cottage. - We make no reference to "communal gardens". There are communal grounds immediately behind The Coach House. This is made clear in the information booklet in the house. - Finally, we believe that the criticism regarding lack of phone signal is valid. Although we mention this in the literature sent to guests after booking, we have now also included a note about this on the website under"Facilities".

Beautifully renovated cottage with period features. Everything clean, new and charming. Lovely bed linens and plenty of space for 4 adults for a week's holiday. Really lovely welcome gift on arrival and overall a very enjoyable stay - we'll be back!

Absolutely perfect!

This is such a beautiful place to stay. We found the house impeccably clean and it had everything we could possibly want. The kitchen is very well equipped; the outside area superb (definitely recommend sitting out there for breakfast!); the beds are very comfortable (loved the lighthouse lamp in the second bedroom) and we loved the layout of the open hallway upstairs. The owners are very thoughtful and even left a bottle of wine for us upon arrival. Loved sitting in the rocking chair by the window, gazing out at the lovely view and enjoying the peace and quiet. The location is great too - very convenient for Bantham beach and also Kingsbridge and (my favourite) Salcombe. I would not hesitate to recommend this barn as a great place to stay in Devon. Many thanks to the owners for making our stay so special.

Lovely Cottage in Stunning Location

We had a really enjoyable stay in this lovely old Coach House. We were very impressed with the quality of the furnishing and the equipment supplied, which was the best we have ever had. The cleanliness was excellent and on cool evenings the log burner made it a warm cosy night. The location is stunning in a pretty valley and very peaceful. The local beach is one of the best around and the South Hams area has so many great walks and places waiting to be explored. We will definitely be returning.
