About this property

Old stone shepherd's house completely renovated, exceptional views

La Bergerie is located in a small hamlet surrounded by vineyards on the slopes of the Caroux mountains in the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc, with covered and open private terraces giving breathtaking views of the Jaur Valley. Walks through beautiful scenery, with many hiking trails (including the GR7) nearby, spectacular gorges with waterfalls and water points among the rocks to swim. Canoeing, fishing, climbing, horse riding, rivers and lakes nearby. Beaches of the Mediterranean at one o'clock.
La Bergerie in 'Les Horts' was built in the 17th century as a stone shepherd's house in the beautiful Jaur Valley, which is now part of the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc. A few stone steps lead to the house of a narrow road with restricted access through the village, and has a secluded landscaped garden surrounding the property. The Bergerie has been imaginatively transformed and enlarged to accommodate four people in comfort with all modern conveniences.

The house is facing south, so very sunny. The basement was once the place where shepherds kept their sheep in winter. Today, it's a large, comfortable two-twin room or a large double bed, with a large vaulted stone ceiling and french doors leading to a sun terrace. The terrace has garden furniture, ideal corner to take meals outside, or enjoy the sun. This space is connected to the main part of the house by a spiral staircase in a modern 'atrium' glass.

Upstairs there is a well equipped kitchen and a comfortable living room with stone walls with exposed beams, a large fireplace with wood burning stove. A large covered terrace opens onto the kitchen and living room. From there, magnificent views along the Juar River valley stretch out as far as the eye can see. A small wooden staircase gives access to a mezzanine which offers the second bedroom above the living room. An unusual and charming space, with a double bed located under a vaulted ceiling with large Velux for cool nights under the stars. Air conditioning is available for scorching summer nights.

In the basement there is a modern bathroom with toilet, walk-in shower and a laundry area equipped with washing machine and dryer.

Hameau Les Horts is halfway between the picturesque historic town of Olargues and Mons-La-Trivalle, connected by the railway converted into a green road, making it an easy cycle or walk of 3km to the café, bakery or shop in both directions (but the return home involves a steep climb). Mons is at the foot of Heric Gorge, renowned for its beautiful scenery, climbing sites, and rocky water pools and waterfalls. The store in the village of Mons is particularly well stocked.

Most walks in the gorges or surrounding hills pass through old chestnut forests shaded by the summer sun, with the possibility of refreshing swim in the fresh water pools. There are also very wild isolated gorges on either side of Les Horts where it is possible to swim in nature.

For serious mountain bikers, Olargues now hosts two of the biggest competitions in Europe; the Enduro World Series and the Epic Enduro Radon, the toughest endurance races in France. At the other end of the line, the PassaPais Voie Verte offers more than 75 km of off-piste for all the family joining all the villages of the Valley of Bedarieux in Mazamet, with occasional cafes along the way.

A paradise for people who are looking for a lot of activities or want to rest.

La Bergerie
Such a fantastic rustic peaceful getaway. We couldn’t have asked for anything more for a relaxing week away in France. The property is certainly unique and has almost everything you could need. The location and the views are spectacular. Plenty of walking and other activities locally surrounded by stunning beautiful villages and hamlets. We hope to return very soon.

Very Disappointing
We enjoyed exploring the area. The house has been imaginatively renovated, but we were very disappointed by its presentation and cleanliness. Parts of the house were in a poor state of repair. The main ground floor bedroom, which was far more suitable for our use than the mezzanine bedroom (accessed by open sided spiral stairs), was being used as a store room and appeared not to have been cleaned since the end of last season. On arrival we spent at least three hours cleaning, tidying, trying to make lights work, wiping outside furniture, sweeping the patio to make the house acceptable. After our return, we emailed the owner detailing the problems and suggested that since we had left the house considerably tidier than we found it, there was no justification for a cleaning fee. We received a noncommittal reply. We then sent a second email with a selection of photos which clearly showed the poor condition of doors, windows and areas around the house, as well as areas that had not been cleaned or tidied, We repeated our request for a refund of the cleaning fee and also suggested that a part-refund on the rental fee would be in order. We received no reply.

Charming detached stone house very homely with a great view
Had a wonderful week at La Bergerie, it's a very peaceful relaxing haven. Property is rustic but very homely and clean. Modern fabulous shower, always hot water. We used the downstairs bedroom which was very comfortable, cooler than the top bedroom. As you can see from site photos there are steps up to the property, a spiral staircase and open steps to top bedroom which won't suit everyone but they add to the charm and are worth it.The views of the valley are great and it was lovely to sit in the top room with the windows removed enjoying the breeze with a glass of wine. Situated in the small hamlet of Les Horts between Olargues and La Mons-both have a good village shop. Ideal for lots of walking/hiking with plenty of marked walks. Walking guides/maps/brochures at house were very helpful. Gorge D'Heric has a good pathway to the top, small cafe was open for drinks/baguettes. Lots of locals swimming/paddling in the large rock pools. A walk to the viewing platform on Mont Caroux is very worthwhile with stunning views, you can do a circular walk starting at the car park in small village of Douch. Take a picnic as no cafe/bakery at Douch. Bikes can be hired from the petrol station on main road at La Mons and you can get straight on the Voie Verte (a disused railway line so mainly flat although we did encounter some steep parts). Olargues is a beautiful old town, very picturesque with a small market on Sunday mornings, about 6-7 stalls but you can stock up with fruit/veg/olives/eggs/cheese/fish/meat. The bakery in Olargues was also open on Sunday morning. Google restaurants in Olargues and you will be pleasantly surprised. You can drive to the coast, we went to Beziers for the morning and Serignan Plage for the afternoon. You can also go canoeing very close by but alas we ran out of days. The grape harvest started while we were there and it was great to see (and smell) the tractors laden with grapes. There is a fig tree outside the back door and we enjoyed some for breakfast which were delicious. La Bergerie is a great base for exploring the area and the scenery is lovely. Weather for September was fabulous with no rain all week and temperatures around 28 degrees, much hotter at coast 36 deg.Juliet and Mike are very knowledgeable about the area and provided us with lots of info prior to going which we appreciated. We had a great week and thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you.
