About the Owner

Hi, my name is Catherine Calvert, I'm a born and bred Yorkshire Lass and moved to Swaledale in 76 at the age of 19 when my parents purchased a property and developed their own B&B business. My love of Swaledale, farming, education and travel and tourism has grown over the years and I set up an open farm at Hazel Brow  where people can enjoy getting up close to some of the livestock and learning about farming and food production. I deliver educational opportunities from the farm and also run a small alpaca trekking business. I'm currently developing further accommodation opportunities from disused barns working with our National Park. I've run a B&B form hazel brow and holiday rentals in the past and worked in the Voluntary and Community Sector on various projects but its my passion to continue to support sustainable tourism and to strive for a vibrant rural dales economy for future generations.

Stunning views all the mod cons.

  • 5 of 5

Full disclosure I have close ties to the village of Low Row, my father was born there. The beauty of Low Row and the Dales are in my blood. But onto Hazel Brow... the property is a gem with stunning views. Breath taking! The house is lovely with period charm and modern convenience. Lots of hot water, heat on demand and a great kitchen.

The owner of the property was wonderful and accommodated a very large request to use the garden for a family reunion!!!

The house is great for small gatherings and large alike.

I would highly recommend this house.

Lovely house + beautiful location = fab break!...

  • 5 of 5

A bit of background - we were 14 women who were at school together over 40 years ago and were looking for somewhere to celebrate a joint Big Birthday Bash. We wanted posh, we wanted pampering and we wanted to party!

And we were able to do it all in this gorgeous house. Nicely semi secluded but easy to find. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, lots of beautiful features and a magnificent dining room with a huge table to sit and socialise around. The house was lovely and warm and there was lots of room outside to sit and admire the beautiful views. The pictures don't do justice to this property and it is far nicer in 'real life'.

Catherine, the owner, had very patiently answered all our requests and queries over the previous weeks and had advised us on hot tub hire and catering. It was great to have a meal cooked and served to us at the table - and have the washing up done at the end of it! We just put our posh frocks on and didn't even have to leave the house. Perfect!

This property is absolutely right for a celebration or for a big family group holiday and I would certainly recommend it as something a little bit different.

So a huge thank you to Catherine for a great service and thanks also to the two lovely ladies who cooked our delicious meal.

We liked it - can you tell?!...

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

A truly fabulous stay at Hazel Brow! Not only was the location outstanding, the house was indulgent but welcoming. There were beautiful views from bathrooms to bedrooms and cosy fires too. Given that there were 14 of us staying, we all managed to have wonderfully warm showers and baths, a lovely surprise based on some of past experiences! The pub was a short walk and offered great food and a nice change from cooking. Thank you for letting us stay and experience your wonderful house, I'm sure we will be back to visit again soon.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fantastic week at Hazel Brow. The house was warm, comfortable, characterful and spacious. It made a perfect house for a family celebration - all the facilities you would want and great to sit around a big dining table with the spectacular view of the Dales as a backdrop. Cannot recommend this place highly enough for a big family holiday. Cath was also really helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Also great to have the Punchbowl Inn just up the road, fantastic walks by the river Swale and in the Dales. Lovely historic towns and villages around too.

Location

From the Owner

Hazel Brow House was a part of the estate which was already farmed by the family. The house is amazing and has been our family home for the last 36 years. It's a great house for family holidays, reunions, celebrations or corporate groups. There's a great restaurant at the village pub, loads of spectacular walks, waterfalls and scenic views.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Durham Tees Valley airport 1 hours drive away at 30 Miles Nearest Barpub : Punch Bowl Inn at 600 Metres Nearest Golf : Catterick Garrison at 14 Miles Nearest Train : Garsdale Station at 17 Miles Nearest Motorway : A1 at 15 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Punch Bowl Inn at 600 Metres Nearest Beach : Whitby 1 1/2 hours scenic drive at 70 Miles Car: recommended

Swaledale is one of the most northerly and spectacular of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The river Swale is England's fastest flowing river, fed by becks and springs from the remote and wild heather moorlands, it tumbles through a series of waterfalls down the Valley. Trout can be fished in season and private fishing is available from the property.

The opening shots for the BBC's series 'All Creatures Great and Small' were filmed just 1 mile away on the moor and in Langthwaite village which is within hiking distance - call in at the Red Lion if you're over there, and experience one of our traditional local pubs. They still keep the traditional opening times so plan your visit to avoid disappointment.

We're ideally located for walkers and hikers with a network of footpaths and green tracks. We supply O.S. maps and books so can cater for those wanting a short leisurely walk to the more serious hiker who enjoys getting into up into the hills, moors and valleys.

Cyclists won't be disappointed either and bike hire is available nearby. Mountain biking is very popular and we are famous for road cycling since the 2014 tour de France came through the village - we're in the middle of 2 'King of the Mountain' stages.

Sightseers have a plethora of opportunity to explore our rich heritage with Middleham, Bolton, Barnard and Richmond castles all within a 15 mile radius and numerous abbeys and priories, both locally and further afield. Fountains Abbey is classed as a world heritage site about 1 hrs drive away with Jervaulx Abbey and tearooms enroute, only 17 miles away. If you’re interested in local history then Reeth Museum is a must or check out the ‘Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology group’.

Tan Hill Inn is at the top of the Dale, bordering on 3 counties: - Cumbria, Yorkshire and County Durham. It’s England’s highest pub standing at 1,732 feet (528 m) above sea level and a welcome sight for walkers on the Pennine Way.

Shoppers don’t have to far to local markets and quaint cobbled streets in Hawes, Richmond, Leyburn and Barnard Castle but Reeth villages, just 3 miles away, offers some excellent craft shops from bespoke cabinet and glass makers to sculptors and needle craft suppliers, and The Garden House pottery. There’s even 2 outdoor clothing suppliers so if you need a pair of new boots there’s plenty of choice!

There’s really something for everyone and far too much to mention here so if you’ve a specific area of interest, contact us and we’ll let you have the local information with pleasure.
