A charming hilltop property in secluded private grounds 10 mins to city centre

Middlefield farm is set within over 4 acres of private and secluded grounds, on the Gog Magog hills at the southern edge of Cambridge City and was originally part of the Middlefield estate. “Middlefield” the principle house of the estate is a grade 2* listed building designed by Edward Lutyens and built in 1908. Middlefield farm was separated from the Middlefield estate when the estate was divided in 1993 and still retains many of its original features. For example the original pump house with its 100feet deep well has been converted into a stunning ensuite bath/wet room.

The accommodation offered is in Keepers Cottage and its collocated annex, both are set within the private, secluded grounds. Keepers Cottage the main house is able to accommodate up to 12 guests, has five bedrooms and 3 bath/wet rooms (1 ensuite). A further 5 guests can be accommodated in the two bedrooms in the annex, one of which has an ensuite bathroom and the other an ensuite shower room.

The main house is a single storey split level rambling property primarily arranged in two wings with the sleeping accommodation primarily in the west wing, the reception areas in the south wing. The kitchen and utility areas are at the hub in the centre. There is a large informal dining area in the kitchen in addition to the main reception rooms and amenities, which are large enough to easily cater for the full 17 guests and have an excellent layout for entertaining all year round;

Winter entertaining-The large sitting room and adjacent dining room are well suited to entertaining, featuring vaulted ceilings, oak flooring, high efficiency contemporary log burners in each room and both rooms are dual aspect. These main reception rooms are also in a different wing to the bedrooms.

Summer entertaining-There is a choice of areas including decking and patio around the pond plus south and west facing sheltered picnic areas in the meadow. Sunsets are amazing due to the elevated position; in the summer there is direct sunlight until the very end of the day. Guests are able to make full use of the grounds which includes garden areas, meadow, orchard and chalk woodland.

note: Children are welcome but there is a 1m deep pond on the site which is a safety hazard for young children. If you book this property you assume the risk of ensuring the safety of any children in your party.

Cambridge – 4.0 miles about 10 minutes outside rush hour.

Cambridge is a beautiful place that is world famous and really needs no introduction. Local attractions include the University of Cambridge and a punt trip through the backs of the colleges is not to be missed although it can be just as nice taking a punt upriver and picnic at Grantchester.

Throughout the summer months there are a number of open air concerts and plays in the area including the famous Cambridge Folk Festival. A few of our favourite Cambridge attractions are mentioned below together with some more comprehensive Cambridge websites, well worth a visit.

For that punt trip either self punt or chauffeur powered there are a number of companies The oldest and largest is Scudamores - www.scudamores.com

Cambridge lies at the heart of East Anglia and within easy reach of London (45 minutes by train).

East Anglia is an incredibly varied region and regional attractions include:

The city of Ely and its cathedral set within the black Fen country, which also includes the wildlife reserve at Wicken Fen.

Suffolk - Constable country which includes Lavenham, Long Melford and Southwold.

Beautiful location, amazing hot tub!

13 of us stayed at Middlefield Farm for a hen do at the end of September and, in short, we had a wonderful time, but I feel compelled to write a more detailed review in light of the 1 star review on here and concerns it might bring up for potential guests. Leading up to our stay, we saw the 1 star review posted here and naturally we were very worried, but it turns out we were worried for nothing! Overall we had a lovely, relaxing stay.

The pictures of the property and description of the amenities on the website are very accurate so I won't go into great detail. The bedrooms and lounge in particular are really lovely and we were lucky enough to have wonderful weather and enjoy the garden and hot tub too. Some bathrooms and some fixtures and fittings are a little worn, but this is to be expected with a property of this age. Everything worked and so although bits and pieces looked tired (e.g. worn tiles etc), it didn't affect our enjoyment of the property one bit. The aga kept the property very warm which was nice in the evenings. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel quality with everything looking brand new then you might be disappointed, but if you are looking for a picturesque, rural farmhouse setting for a large group, you will likely be very happy (especially if you like playing pool or table tennis!). Everything was clean and tidy and furnishings were all very comfortable.

I could not find any unusable pots and pans, as suggested by the 1 star review, and all locks on bathroom doors worked fine. There were no smells of mould in any of the rooms. When we arrived on a very warm afternoon, all the windows were closed and the aga was blasting out heat, so there was a slight mildew/musty smell, but this was easily fixed by letting some air through the property.

The garden was lovely and well maintained. The hot tub also looked and smelled clean - it was great fun. At one point we accidentally turned it off, but called John and he came straight away to help us get it back on. Whenever we had a small issue we called John who solved it as soon as possible, which was great - good customer service! He also helped us work out how to use the aga and made some food suggestions.

It is a little tricky to find so definitely ask John for specific directions! He can also recommend a good value taxi service to go into Cambridge. I would love to return, if I ever need to get that many people into one place again!

Very poorly maintained property

Upon arrival you are greeted with a number of signs written in a way that leads you to believe the property does not exist (the signs have been erected by neighbours). They have felt the need to have the signs due to trespassing on their property. V unpleasant start to your holiday! Listed are some of the faults with the property......

Mice in the kitchen. Both fridges in main house were unclean.No bolt for the toilet door (a lollipop stick is in place instead). This facility is unacceptable needs a complete refurb, its horrible could not use.

All kitchen pans are in a poor condition and need replacing Various doors with no locks or handles and no way of closing them.Mud on the mattress protector.Bedrooms had window screwed shut (which meant it was too hot to sleep in comfortably). Triple room is dark, damp and full of cob webs.Double bed collapsed whilst sitting on it as support strut was not screwed in to the frame.Draws filled with owners personal belongings.Holes in walls covered by pictures or mirrors

Glass in a window pane bedroom was held in place with two nails

Loose paving slabs by the fish pond (dangerous).Loose wooden flooring panel on the top STEP in the hall (dangerous).Leather furniture in lounge area very grubby, cushions dirty.Bathroom smelled of sewage, was mouldy, had tiles coming loose, generally very unpleasant and needs a refurbishment.Shower floods the bathroom to the en-suite (note: electric radiator positioned close to the shower which I find unbelievable given the way the shower floods the bathroom - Dangerous).Toilet seat in the master broken.Toilet had not been cleaned properly. Stains on walls, general damp smell in en-suite.French door handle (exterior) was hanging off.The patio area/garden was overgrown and uncared for and did not resemble the lovely picture shown online.The garden furniture needs replacing. Our party felt the Jacuzzi was not clean (we took photos showing a film/scum on top of the water. The property owner did write after we complained and said the Jacuzzi is regularly refilled)

We met one of the neighbours who thanked us for being considerate during our stay. She told us of a number of instances where users of the property were trespassing on their property, it was clear why the condition of the property is so poor given the property is rented to hen/stag parties. Keepers Cottage is completely unloved and lacking all the charm of other farmhouses we have stayed at........

30% of the total rental amount is required with the booking. The balance is required no later than 6 weeks prior to occupation.
