About the property

Generous 4 Bedroom House With Stunning Views, Pool And Terraces

A country retreat in the low mountains between Malaga and Granada. This is a perfect rural hideaway without neighbours, a beautiful restored farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove with panoramic views - even as far as the sea on a clear day. This has the intimacy of a house that is lived in because the owners in fact live here for quite a bit of the year - it does not have the sterility of a property only used for rentals.

The feel is traditional with modern touches and of course all mod cons - fully equipped kitchen, DVD and sound system, and heating for the winter. The private swimming pool with simple solar heating is 12m x 3m, ideal for lengths or just for lounging. Set in a beautiful garden and surrounding by olive trees, this is about getting away from it all and relaxing. The double beds are particularly comfortable and generous.

The main terrace offers al fresco dining from a beautiful Moroccan table and chairs. There is a sun terrace by the pool with loungers and parasols. The large kitchen / diner / sitting room is L-shaped open plan.

There is a quality outdoor table tennis table on its own terrace.

Please note that the property is accessed via a 4km TRACK, Although it is quite feasible to arrive in the smallest of hire cars, a larger vehicle or even a 4x4 will make the journey more comfortable.

The landscape is one of the most breathtaking in Southern Spain. Some describe it as 'biblical'. Alongside the house are the three mountains known as 'Las Tres Hermanas' (The Three Sisters), behind are the sierras known as 'La Sierracilla del Rey' (The King's Little Range), in the distance is 'Maroma' at over 2,000 metres, in front are the 'Montes de Malaga' and in the far distance the sea and the coast (the latter visible only on clear days).

About Jonathan Hyams

Owners Jonathan and Morag live in Bristol but spend at least 4 months each year in the rental property. Morag is a potter and Jonathan works in information technology in the creative industries.

Jonathan Hyams purchased this house in 2001

Why Jonathan Hyams chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

The house is a beautiful contrast to the hurly burly of life back in the UK. Here you have the gentle tinkling of goat bells and the chirping of birds to listen to. The views are stunning but also entrancing, sometimes it can be hard to read your book because the vista is so distracting! The area where the house is is very unspoilt and very Spanish, a very welcoming and rural culture. And yet within 40 minutes you can be enjoying the delights of Malaga city centre or checking in at the airport or train station.

What makes this house unique

Peace and tranquillity, stunning views, a rural life but with all mod cons.

A well equipped house in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday. The house is a lovely place to visit to get away from it all and recharge the batteries. The location is stunning and yet it is less than an hour from Malaga airport. The outdoor ping pong table was great fun and the scene of many family doubles matches once the heat of the day had passed.

Amazing villa with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place to stay. I cannot do the views justice other than to say some of the most stunning views I have ever seen. Nestled high up in the Malaga sierras you can see right down to the sea and all the surrounding hills, valleys and mountains right behind you.

If you want to get away from it all where you literally hear no sounds of humanity then this villa does the trick. Beautifully presented, cosy with all the mod cons and only a 10 min drive to the local town for some supplies. The trails are great if you are a walker or a trail runner. And can cool off in the pool afterwards whilst looking across the valley to the beautiful town of Comares perched on top of the mountain.

Jonathon was charming, helpful and answered any question we had via email and indeed called us to make sure all was ok and gave some useful tips on enjoying the area.

I cannot recommend this villa highly enough and we all cannot wait to come back again.

Owner's Response: Nigel has expressed the very essence of Mariolo - it is exactly as we feel too. And he has been a wonderful guest and I look forward to welcoming him back again soon.

A truly wonderful house with stunning views. For those who want a peaceful retreat.

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely adored our two week holiday at Finca Mariolo. It has the best views of any house we have ever stayed in and my husband and I liked nothing better than sitting out on the terrace first thing in the morning with a cup of tea or later on in the day with a cold beer or glass of wine, taking in the surrounding landscape. The boys loved the pool of course and the table tennis table was brilliant fun. Daily competitions once the sun went down were a must. The house itself is very comfortable and has everything you need. The drive up to the house might seem a little daunting at first but once you've done it a couple of times it is fine. No day was complete without a touch of star gazing and shooting star spotting while lying down by the pool taking in the wonderful smell of Dama De Noche. It is a really lovely house to relax in. When we did venture out it was to sample a few of the local restaurants in Riogordo and my the nearby reservoir at Vinuela and a quick visit to the beach at Torre Del Mar. Not put off by the heat my husband made a day trip to Cordoba using the excellent train service from the train station just outside Antequera. It only takes an hour and a half to drive to Marbella if you want to visit some more lively hot spots. We would love to visit again and maybe earlier on in the season or in the spring when it's less hot so that we can explore the surrounding areas more and venture further afield. A really memorable holiday.so thank you to Jonathan and Morag for letting us enjoy your beautiful house and for all your help.

Very well-equipped property in a lovely setting.

  • 5 of 5

Inside, the house is charming, neat, and very well equipped. Outside, the views from the terrace are lovely, and the house is surrounded by olive groves. The photos on the site give a very good idea of what it's like.

The owner was very helpful and communicative - he checked in with us shortly after we arrived to make sure everything was OK, and was very quick to answer emails.

We stayed at the beginning of November. A few days of heavy rain, followed by sunshine and warmer weather. It got chilly at night, but the log fire kept us snug and warm.

Two small caveats about staying in winter. The road up to the house is a dirt track, which is fine in summer, but can get muddy when wet. Our 2WD car coped OK during our stay, but later on in winter, after prolonged heavy rains, it might be too muddy without 4WD. The owner should be able to advise you. Also, winter is hunting season, and hunting parties are allowed to shoot on the surrounding land on Sundays and public holidays. This can be a bit intrusive, but should only be one day a week.

A wonderful place.

  • 5 of 5

A week was way too short. A whole year wouldn’t be enough to fully appreciate Finca Mariolo: the changing light on the dramatic Tajo de Gómer mountain to the east of the house; early morning cloud cascading over the ridge of mountains to the north; the last pink light on La Maroma over in the Sierra de Tejeda; the sound of the wind in the pepper tree and in the fig trees whose dry leaves made it sound like gushing water. Late every afternoon we heard goat bells as a herd grazed on the mountainside, and on the terrace at dusk we watched hummingbird moths as the flowers opened on the wonderfully fragrant Dama de Noche. Later at night the near full moon cast bold shadows of the olive and nut trees in the grove (where one night my son and I even encountered a wild boar) and from the terrace we gazed out at the distant lights of the five villages that can be seen from the finca.

The house too was perfect, full of character, very clean and well equipped. The views from its windows are so spectacular you want to leap out of bed at dawn to open the shutters and take it all in. We are also very grateful to Jonathan for his excellent communications throughout.

When we could tear ourselves away from the house (and we enjoyed our drives up and down the track!) we also liked Riogordo where the locals are friendly and where there’s a market on Wednesdays, and the barbecued meat and fish at the campsite restaurant at La Viñuela was superb and good value for the generous servings.

We can’t wait to return to Finca Mariolo.

Stunning views, well-equipped and perfect peace.

  • 5 of 5

Finca Mariolo is described perfectly. We were thrilled on our arrival at just how beautiful a setting it was and had been sent extremely good directions from the owner. The house was very clean and well-equipped, and if you want to totally relax one could stay all week without moving! The nearest beach even in August felt relaxed and had a good choice of little restaurants. The village is fine for most essentials but I would recommend a first shop in one of the bigger supermarkets nearer Malaga for more choice. I would thoroughly recommend this house to anyone.

The property is located in the sierras overlooking Riogordo and has breathtaking views of the Montes de Malaga and all the surrounding villages. On a clear day you can see the sea.

The house is set in 10 acres of olive grove and is a haven of peace and tranquillity. The activities to undertake on a daily basis are rest and relaxation, sun-bathing of the terraces, swimming in the pool, playing ping pong on the outdoor table, or soaking up the natural surroundings. There are a great variety of birds including eagles.

There are lots of nearby opportunities for walking or else you can quickly drive into Riogordo for a tapa or to do some shopping. The other villages around the Axarquia region are also attractive and interesting to explore.

Just a little further afield are the attractions of Nerja, Granada, Malaga, Torre Del Mar, and Antequerra, Also accessible as a day trip or overnight stay are Seville, Ronda, Cordoba, and the Alpujarras.
