Overview

About the property

3 ensuite bedrooms, parking, pretty garden with heated pool and great views.

La Maison de la Roche is a luxuriously refurbished house on the ramparts of the beautiful medieval village of Domme and in one of the prettiest but quiet lanes. Being on the ramparts, there are wonderful views over the countryside from the house and its pretty garden but the restaurants, bars, shops and beautiful environment of Domme - classified as 'one of the most beautiful villages of France' - are on your doorstep.

There is private parking for two cars within the grounds of the house (very rare in Domme!). The swimming pool in the garden is heated and is for the exclusive use of the party staying in the house.

The house has 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. One bedroom has a super king sized bed, the second has a king sized bed and the third has a king sized bed and a single bed.

There is a living room with a huge 'walk-in' fireplace, a large, well equipped kitchen with a dining table, a library and a games room with table tennis, etc.

There is a huge collection of DVDs and hardback books, as well as maps and guide books for the local area. If you're a student of history, the library contains many books on the history of the area, the Hundred Years War, etc. There are also one or two amusing surprises!

You might find details of the layout useful. Entering the house you find the living room (4.7 x 4.5m) with a door to the kitchen (4 x 3.75m). A washing machine cupboard and a WC are off the kitchen and on the other side of the kitchen is a door to the games room (4 x 3.13m) and stairs to Bedroom 3 (3.9 x 3.1m). Back in the living room there are stairs to the Library (3.75 x 3.2m) and Bedroom 1 (4.87 x 3.5m). From the library there are stairs to Bedroom 2 in the attic (4.6 x 3.6m). Each bedroom has its own bathroom or shower room and WC.

About Isobel Davis

Domme must be our favourite village in France; we have 3 properties there! Our objective has always been to make staying in our houses a pleasure in itself, regardless of all the fantastic attractions to be enjoyed in the area.

Isobel Davis purchased this house in 2013

Why Isobel Davis chose Domme

When we saw it, the potential for refurbishment to create a spacious house with such open views but within the village made it a must-have. The fact that it is so close to the most historic features of Domme was the clincher.

What makes this house unique

La Maison de la Roche is part of the village but has its own private, heated swimming pool, a pretty garden and marvellous views as well as private parking - a great bonus for Domme! Apart from the bedrooms the living room, library and games room (it does occasionally rain in the Dordogne!) provide lots of space to enjoy and the spacious, well equipped kitchen is the stimulus to enjoy using the superb produce for which the Perigord Noir is famous.

Charming house in an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

This lovely house is ideally situated for easy access to the shops and restaurants of Domme but, despite its convenient location, it is also very peaceful. The property is full of character and is beautifully furnished and decorated. It is also very well equipped. The owners were very helpful and their recommendations regarding local restaurants were very useful. I would strongly recommend this property.

A Little Bit of French Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Maison de la Roche was the perfect family holiday home. Excellently situated in the lovely village of Domme.

All of the bedrooms and en-suites were very clean, and furnished to a very high standard. The layout of the rooms gives various options to where family members can sleep without disturbing each other.

The kitchen was very well kitted out with all the appliances and utensils that you will ever need. Plenty of glasses/plates/cutlery etc; are supplied for all your needs. The small touches, such as the supply of 6 plug adapters; means that you don't need to pack them.

Each TV has British digital TV - so the children are well catered for. Along with the vast array of DVD's; books & games.

Although wet weather entertainment was not required during our stay; the play room with table tennis and dartboard are a nice addition.

The outdoor space was wonderful. The terrace was located so you can enjoy your breakfast and lunch in the sun. The pool was superb.Well maintained and a good supply of quality sun loungers and parasols for lazy afternoons by the pool.

Having the car parking space in Domme at the property is brilliant.

The communication process before; during and after our stay, with the owner; Isobel; was excellent.

Wouldn't have to think twice about returning to Maison de la Roche in the future; as it provided us with a perfect family holiday with many special memories.

Stunning property in wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on the website do not really do the property justice. Every last detail has been thought about. The property was spotlessly clean and very well maintained and we were delighted with the charm of a traditional french kitchen, in keeping with the rest of the property, but which nevertheless had all the modern appliances required. The proprietors were extremely helpful both before and during our stay and made sure we had a phone call on our first night to ensure everything was in order, which was a lovely touch. The house is ideally situated to visit the many stunning places in the area, all within a 20/30 minute radius. We didn't have time during our fortnight to visit them all so will definitely return.

Lovely house in the middle of Domme

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely with a few hidden surprises. I won't disclose what, other than to say that it made us all smile. Isobel has thought of everything to make sure that guests want for nothing. I particularly liked the adapters, just in case they are needed. The house is very clean and well equipped. The beds and beautiful bedding, were extremely comfortable. I loved the very pretty garden and the wonderful views from the house and garden. It was lovely to lounge around the swimming pool after a day sight seeing or paddling a canoe along the Dordogne. The house is situated just a short distance from the restaurants and shops in Domme, which is a beautiful village overlooking the Dordogne rive and beautiful countryside. We were lucky enough to be there when the Tour de France went through. The atmosphere in Domme was amazing and after waiting for nearly four hours, the cyclists went past so close we could nearly touch them. The French people made us feel very welcome everywhere we went and their humour was wonderful.

The customer service from Isobel was exemplary, she kept in touch prior to our visit, provided route maps from the airports, informed us the Tour de France was going through Domme and made sure we were contacted (by her dad) when we got there to ensure everything was ok. Perfect. Thank you Isobel.

Stunning property in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the property and were delighted with our choice. Harry Potter meets Game of Thrones. Tastefully furnished with hidden surprises. What a treat. We felt truly spoilt and the outside area did not disappoint. A fantastic private pool set in beautiful gardens. I would say whilst the AstroTurf grass is very practical next to water, it does get rather hit so nimble feet are required. The kitchen whilst rustic would welcome some updating for all those would be chefs. However we still managed to create some masterpieces. All in all a wonderful property and destination . Coupled with the excellent service , generosity and help from the owners you will not be disappointed.

Well appointed and fantastic position

I would like to apologise for the typographical errors in the last review. It was meant to say"Isobel and her family" as well as "look forward". Remeber not to write a review with a poor signal and ancient phone!

Domme is a destination in its own right. It is classified as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' and was built as a fortified 'bastide' in 1250 by Philip the Bold and Simon de Montfort. Close to the house is the Porte des Tours where some of the Knights Templar were imprisoned. Their graffiti are to be seen on the walls.

This is the most exciting part of the Dordogne area, where the river runs past soaring cliffs, the history of the Hundred Years war is apparent in several castles, great chateaux display wonderful architecture and works of art and the birth of civilisation is to be seen in the many archeological sites, some with original cave paintings. There are also many spectacular caves with stalactites and rivers to explore. (Domme even has its own, with an entrance in the market square!) The extraordinary, beautiful medieval city of Sarlat is 10 minutes drive away.

There are lots of opportunities for sporting activities. The house has its own games room, of course, there is canoeing on the river nearby, paragliding, microlight flying at Domme's airfield, hot air ballooning and a terrifying (well, the kids seem to find it OK) aerial adventure park with ropes suspended very high in the trees.
