About the property

3 ensuite bedrooms, parking, pretty garden with heated pool and great views.

La Maison de la Roche is a luxuriously refurbished house on the ramparts of the beautiful medieval village of Domme and in one of the prettiest but quiet lanes. Being on the ramparts, there are wonderful views over the countryside from the house and its pretty garden but the restaurants, bars, shops and beautiful environment of Domme - classified as 'one of the most beautiful villages of France' - are on your doorstep.

There is private parking for two cars within the grounds of the house (very rare in Domme!). The swimming pool in the garden is heated and is for the exclusive use of the party staying in the house.

The house has 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. One bedroom has a super king sized bed, the second has a king sized bed and the third has a king sized bed and a single bed.

There is a living room with a huge 'walk-in' fireplace, a large, well equipped kitchen with a dining table, a library and a games room with table tennis, etc.

There is a huge collection of DVDs and hardback books, as well as maps and guide books for the local area. If you're a student of history, the library contains many books on the history of the area, the Hundred Years War, etc. There are also one or two amusing surprises!

You might find details of the layout useful. Entering the house you find the living room (4.7 x 4.5m) with a door to the kitchen (4 x 3.75m). A washing machine cupboard and a WC are off the kitchen and on the other side of the kitchen is a door to the games room (4 x 3.13m) and stairs to Bedroom 3 (3.9 x 3.1m). Back in the living room there are stairs to the Library (3.75 x 3.2m) and Bedroom 1 (4.87 x 3.5m). From the library there are stairs to Bedroom 2 in the attic (4.6 x 3.6m). Each bedroom has its own bathroom or shower room and WC.

Why Isobel Sanger chose Perigord Noir

When we saw it, the potential for refurbishment to create a spacious house with such open views but within the village made it a must-have. The fact that it is so close to the most historic features of Domme was the clincher.

What makes this house unique

La Maison de la Roche is part of the village but has its own private, heated swimming pool, a pretty garden and marvellous views as well as private parking - a great bonus for Domme! Apart from the bedrooms the living room, library and games room (it does occasionally rain in the Dordogne!) provide lots of space to enjoy and the spacious, well equipped kitchen is the stimulus to enjoy using the superb produce for which the Perigord Noir is famous.

Great gîte, great position

Great position within the walls of Domme, just so easy to be able to walk into Domme without the hassle of parking.

The house was themed in keeping with the town and the Knight Templers. It was spacious and comfortable containing everything that one could ask for. A surprise bottle of bubbly awaited us in the fridge along with a pack of essential items. The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. It was very hot during our stay and fans were provided in the bedrooms and the pool was invaluable.

Isobel or her family were available and helpful.

The area of course was outstandingly beautiful and we loom forward to being able to stay there again. Thanks to all.

Ideal Dordogne Destination

It's difficult to begin and describe such an incredible place.

Maybe the best way to start is to convey how impressed we were with Isobel and the hospitality afforded to us during our visit. Upon arrival, a lovely gift awaited my wife and I, as well as the other couple we were traveling with. This was total unexpected and indicative of the graciousness of our host. In addition to the gift, the home was super-well equipped and had many of the "starters" (e.g., coffee, etc.) that we were expecting to buy at our first grocery stop. Thank you, Isobel, for helping launch our successful Dordogne stay.

Next, we were very impressed with the facility, itself. Unlike many other vacation rentals we've enjoyed in the past, the bedrooms were unbelievably spacious and appointed. Being American, we're used to king-sized beds and were happy to see several in the household. The bathrooms were wonderful and impressively immaculate.

The kitchen was adorable and, again, well-equipped with all the essentials requisite for in-home dining. We leveraged the kitchen several times during our stay, taking full advantage of the Perigord specialty markets in Domme and surrounding location, preparing dinner and dining al fresco on the lovely patio adjacent to the kitchen.

This brings me to the wonderful landscaping surrounding the property. Let's begin by saying that the website pictures can't do justice to the actual beauty of the property and the adjacent hills. The views are magnificent and, with the spring foliage and flowers, idyllic. We enjoyed time just sitting on the patio, consuming wonderful fromage and sipping refreshing Bergerac wines.

Not to be overlooked, but the private carpark next to the chateau was a Godsend. Needless to say, parking in one of the most beautiful French Bastides is always a challenge. However, being able to park your vehicle right at your front door was extremely functional.

Finally, the location in Domme, itself, was amazing. Having traveled the Perigord extensively, Domme is absolutely the ideal location for the many wonderful day trips we experienced. Besides being one of the most beautiful and historically-immersed villages in France, its proximity to all that the Dordogne has to offer, is incredible. Whether it's the majesty of the river you seek, or access to the wonderful wine country, or just the indulgence of fine Perigord cuisine, Domme is the place to be.

So, my strong recommendation is to book Maison de la Roche.

A privilege to stay here....

We've holidayed in France for the past 10 years and it has always been a real challenge to get the balance right between privacy on the one hand, and convenience on the other. Well, this time we got it absolutely spot on with Maison de la Roche - a beautiful holiday home in a perfect location.

All the many features and facilities of the property, both inside and out, have already been very well documentated in all the other reviews - and we can very happily and honestly echo them all - but we would also like to focus on the owners (the Sanger family) who have, collectively, made it a truly memorable holiday.

Right from the early stages of the booking process, Isobel has been very responsive, helpful and thoughtful throughout. This was evidenced immediately upon our arrival, because as well as finding a comprehensive 'Welcome Pack' including champagne in the fridge, there was also a lovely gift-wrapped present waiting for me on the kitchen table (it was my birthday 2 days after arrival). Furthermore, Andrea and Norman (Isobel's parents who were staying in their other property just down the road) then invited us all over for an evening meal later in the week, which was a wonderful evening. Such warm, generous and interesting hosts - that evening was one of the highlights of our stay!!

We also really appreciated the thoughtful extra touches in the house that we haven't come across before, such as hair straighteners as well as hair dryers in the bedrooms, and a comprehensive set of plug adaptors in the kitchen to cover all possible eventualities. It is this attention to detail and focus on customer comfort that really sets Maison de la Roche apart.

To summarise, this was one of our best holidays in France to date in terms of accommodation, location, comfort and facilities, and we certainly hope to return in the not-too-distant future. Sincere thanks to Andrea, Norman and Isobel.

Beautiful property with wonderful views

What a lovely holiday we had. The property was extremely well equipped to cater for our 3 generations of family members with plenty of space to relax and entertain ourselves and felt very much like a home. The kitchen had everything we could need for indoor and outdoor dining or sitting by the pool. All the bedrooms and bathrooms were lovely and the whole place was very clean and well kept. The games room and the extremely well stocked library gave lots of opportunities for family fun. The pool and garden with the wonderful views over the surrounding area. Domme itself has a very good selection of places to eat (the pizzaria was a favourite) and shop but is not far from many places to visit and we did a fair bit of site seeing and kyaking. I would not hesitate to recommend Maison de la Roche and the owners were very helpfull right from the start. I hope to visit again.

An easy 5 stars

My good lady wife spends untold hours every year trying to find the perfect property for our annual French getaway. It was obvious from the second we arrived that she had nailed it this year. Apart from the fact that the house is stunning, it gives you that rare feeling that you are in the middle of the countryside but with the knowledge that shops and excellent restaurants are only a few paces away. We loved the garden and spent hours here drinking the local produce and admiring the views. Prior to our arrival Isobel was incredibly helpful and sorted out a power supply so that I could run my precious moth trap, a highlight of my holiday. We absolutely loved Domme and we're struggling to find somewhere as good for next year's break. There is a very high chance we will return one fine day!

Domme is a destination in its own right. It is classified as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' and was built as a fortified 'bastide' in 1250 by Philip the Bold and Simon de Montfort. Close to the house is the Porte des Tours where some of the Knights Templar were imprisoned. Their graffiti are to be seen on the walls.

This is the most exciting part of the Dordogne area, where the river runs past soaring cliffs, the history of the Hundred Years war is apparent in several castles, great chateaux display wonderful architecture and works of art and the birth of civilisation is to be seen in the many archeological sites, some with original cave paintings. There are also many spectacular caves with stalactites and rivers to explore. (Domme even has its own, with an entrance in the market square!) The extraordinary, beautiful medieval city of Sarlat is 10 minutes drive away.

There are lots of opportunities for sporting activities. The house has its own games room, of course, there is canoeing on the river nearby, paragliding, microlight flying at Domme's airfield, hot air ballooning and a terrifying (well, the kids seem to find it OK) aerial adventure park with ropes suspended very high in the trees.
