About Anthony Stiff

We are a family of 3 and have holidayed in the part of the world for over 20 years on and off. We fell in love with the area firstly by staying on Ile de Rey, and then we thought we would like to buy a place and found this house. Location, location, location! It ticked all the boxes for us and we have enjoyed many wonderful times with family and friends. It is such an easy and relaxing place to be with everything nearby that we could wish for in terms of a seaside holiday.

Anthony Stiff purchased this house in 2003

Why Anthony Stiff chose Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard

See Telegraph article extract below

Three generations, three different sets of needs, but for Sam Llewellyn and family the Vendée region had it all.

"Twenty-five years ago we had spent a happy holiday nearby en famille, bouncing around in the pine forests on the dunes"

By Sam Llewellyn

June 2013

Seaside holidays are hard to get right. Very small children wish to play on nice, safe beaches. Their parents, still young and full of vim, do not always wish to sit by the side of a rock pool agreeing with a two-year-old that it is deep. Grandparents, while by no means without vim themselves, have less objection to exploring the concept of deepness with people 60 years their junior.

So a three-generation beach holiday seemed like a good idea. We needed decent weather, tides big enough for rock pools, and waves big enough for surfing but not so big that they would sweep the little ones out to sea. There should also be sand dunes, pine trees and red squirrels.

The Vendée, the part of France just south of Brittany, has most of these attributes. It is unfashionable enough that in early September, after the frenzy of the French August has abated, a house sleeping 10 can be got for a sensible weekly rent.

One of the great advantages of this coast, though, is that the dunes behind the beach are a regional park, on which no building is permitted. We had taken the precaution of assuring ourselves that the house we had rented was a short walk from the sea, and under the eaves of the dune-woods. Having spent an afternoon provisioning in the Super U, we moved in.

And there was a long table shaded by a vine, at which the parents and the grandparents could drink vin rosé (the Provence model, and plan the assault on the sea.

What makes this house unique

Great location, convenient for local shops, beach, restaurants, bike hire. Well equipped for cooking, BBQ and easy relaxing house to live in.

Relaxing Holiday

  • 4 of 5

we arrived to find the house clean and well presented, and was well situated close to a good sandy beach. A small shop nearby was useful for the fresh baguettes we bought on a daily basis. getting the car in/out of the drive was challenging. The property felt homely and comfortable with all the essentials you would expect of someone's home. It was lovely to be able to sit outside for most of our meals as the garden was private and not overlooked. The property is in a quiet location about a 20 minutes walk from the village centre. There is no Wi-Fi which my children missed but a local bar with Wi-Fi was the solution.

landestypisches Haus in ruhiger Umgebung

  • 4 of 5

Ferienhaus liegt in unmitelbarer Strandnaehe in ruhiger Umgebung.

Nice location and place for a quite stay

  • 4 of 5

The pictures don't do justice to the size of the place. Had a really good stay, though sometimes not easy accessing the driveway due to other traffic and the size of our vehicle. For me only one thing missing as I run several business - internet access would have been a great benefit.

Well equipped and plenty of space internally for the 5 in our party.

The owners were very good with communications and it suited what I needed - location etc as I didn't want the hustle and bustle of a main town / resort and so it was perfect in that respect.

Comfortable family house in a fine position

  • 4 of 5

Brilliant position for beach lovers just 5 mins stroll from a long sandy beach with fascinating rock pools at low tide. A cycle track is also close to the house. Small shops nearby and more in the St Vincent and Jard-sur-mer which has a fine Monday market which set us up with goodies for the week, a huge supermarket and a pleasant port with lots of restaurants. Fish is excellent everywhere. Easy driving to many interesting places from La Rochelle and the Ile de Re to Noirmutier, the Marais Poitevin, some excellent vineyards - and a fine local castle at Talmont. If you like dolmen & menhirs well they are all around, and there seemed to be an extraordinary number of water parks for children in the area.

The house is comfortable, quiet, well equipped and has loads of space. Two wash/shower rooms with two separate toilets makes group living very easy. There's a good oven and fridge and a large dining table for group eating, with another under the vines outside. The lawn out the front is good for kids. It's very much a family house, homely rather than smart, and that suited us fine.

This small coastal village is situated on the site of a former Gallic port. It has a small centre with church, market and shops. George Clemenceau, a former French Prime Minister (early 1900's) had a summer house here which today remains as a museum. The village is unspoiled by development, and is protected by a dune forest. Talmont-St-Hilaire, is an attractive local destination with historic interest (Richard the Lionheart), shops and restaurants.

The Vendee offers vast beaches of white sand dotted with holiday resorts and fishing ports, and the charm of it's hinterland. In the northwest and south, lie the Marais (the marshes), where vast spaces are divided up by mazes of canal and hedges, forming an intriguing landscape, rich in ecology. There is a rich archaeological heritage, including evidence of pre-historic settlement with numerous standing stones (Dolmens) and medieval castles. The amount of sunshine enjoyed by the Vendee is akin to that found on the Cote d'Azur.

Other Activities: boules, bird watching, canoeing
