Why Vivien Roley chose Penzance

We had been talking about buying a holiday home abroad for years but never managed to find the time to really look at all of the potential locations.

In May 2004 we took a short break to Mousehole with the kids and after just a few days we felt so at home we said ‘Why are we looking abroad when we have found Mousehole and Cornwall?’

When we decided to take the plunge and look for a home in Mousehole we had very specific requirements. We wanted somewhere that was cosy enough for 2 and yet with enough accommodation for our two boys and their friends, all of whom, we were assured, would want to join them! We wanted all of the traditional cottage features but with modern accommodation and facilities, close to the harbour and with a view to the sea. To much to ask? Almost but then we found 5 Regent Terrace, which we have appropriately re-named Seamore Cottage.

Almost immediately we had enquiries about holiday letting but we decided that as this was to be our home too, we would spend about 6 months re-fitting the cottage to a standard that we, and others, would appreciate.

What makes this cottage unique

Seamore Cottage, which has been the home of Mousehole mariners for over 150 years, is about 80 odd paces from the harbour front and there are a number precious parking spaces close by. The cottage was completely rebuilt in 1999 transforming the accommodation but retaining the original features.

I try to go down to Mousehole whenever there is a vacancy and I have fallen in love with waking up in the morning and sitting on the window seat with a cup of tea in the front bedroom and watch the fisherman go out.

Mousehole is simply beautiful and tiny as it’s name suggests. Known as one of the loveliest coastal villages in England it’s granite cottages, with unique slate roofs cluster around the harbour, along narrow streets and cobbled lanes. The pretty harbour, where colourful, bobbing fishing boats glitter in the crystal clear Cornish sunlight, has a safe sandy beach, ideal for kids of all ages enclosed by a granite harbour wall with the smallest of openings onto Mounts Bay.

The village has a couple of handy shops, a post office and newsagents, some fine restaurants and a wonderful pub, The Ship Inn, where a warm welcome, good service and hearty meals are assured to locals and visitors alike. Mousehole is surrounded by a lovely coastline, designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ by the National Trust. There are two more beaches close by, with rock pools that will keep youngsters entertained for hours.

Cosy Character Cottage With Sea View In Mousehole

Cosy and full of character

  • 4 of 5

A very lovely cosy cottage, full of character and quirks that should be embraced and not critisized (like a few people have in the visitors book) A lot of thought has gone in to making it a home from home. Mousehole is a special place- as is the whole of West Cornwall. Get out there and explore - you won't be disappointed; oh, and don't take any notice of the weather forecast! This little tip of the country has a mind of its own.

Wonderful, cosy home from home.

We really enjoyed our 3night February get away here at Seamore cottage. We were there to relax and relax we did!! Mousehole is beautiful, we ventured out for a stroll round the pretty harbour finishing with a pint in The Ship. The cottage was lovely and warm, the bedrooms beautifully furnished with "by the sea" touches. The best thing we found was there was no WiFi or mobile phone signal (on our net work anyway). Being a busy family and with two teenage boys 14 and 17, we all loved being cut off from tech. We played board games, cooked, enjoyed watching the winter Olympic games, lit the fire we even did a 1000 piece jigsaw we found in the kitchen dresser. We will definitely return.

Potentially nice but, as warned, still with scaffolding so paricularly dark.

  • 2 of 5

It is a damp cottage that would benefit from having low level heating all year. Rubble in hallway and no towels probably made me less sympathetic.

Hot water switched off with 24 hours to warm up and no logs or lighting materials for log burner.

To be fair, I suspect that as a last minute booking no one had a chance to go in and prepare cottage. Left message with housekeeper asking about towels and no reply so possibly away.

Owner's Response: Thank you. To answer your comments . As you mentioned , I did warn you about scaffolding and outside roof building before you booked and you were happy to go ahead . Cottage is not actually damp and gets warm very quickly when you turn on the instant heat . I say in the instructions I don’t provide towels but will on request . Water has a boost , instructions given , which provides hot water almost instantly whilst heater warms up. Again I do not provide logs and coal but will look into that in the winter .

Cozy and quaint

We loved Mousehole and the cottage. Only problem is no wifi. Would not be a problem if you could use your phone and 3G but no phone signal in cottage! Just made keeping in touch with family hard.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review . You can get a signal in the front bedroom by the window most of the time , but part of the charm of the cottage is the fact there is no wifi . I have thought about installing, but it's nice to have some peace from the world and social media . Signal is always available just outside the house and in all the village pubs and restaurants for when you really need it .
