About this property

Traditional Breton Longère Near Historic Josselin

La Ville au Tady stands in over 1 acre of gardens. It is a traditional Breton longère, or long-house, built 1868. It has been fully renovated while retaining its charm and character.

Located in a small hamlet in Southern Brittany, the local village of Guegon is just a few minutes drive through scenic country lanes. Within the village you will find several bars, a general store and the essential boulangerie for fresh baked baguettes and croissants.

The area is perfect for exploring on foot or cycling, with a designated cycle route passing through the hamlet. The medieval town of Josselin with its famous chateau, 17th Century buildings, bars and restaurants is an easy 10 minute drive. Brittany’s largest inland lake is located just outside Josselin, with swimming and water sport facilities. Superb beaches are to be found all along the nearby Morbihan coast which is said to have 365 small Islands, one to explore for each day of the year.

There are many interesting small villages and larger towns in the region. Auray is a lovely old town with lots of shops and restaurants, an old port and an excellent Sunday market. Vannes is a large town on the edge of the Gulf of Morbihan with an old quarter bustling with good restaurants and small shops. Excellent markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a famous jazz festival in July. Carnac has excellent beaches but it is world famous for being an ancient and historic place with over 3,000 prehistoric megalithic stones. There is comprehensive information on places to visit and suggestions for activities on our personal web site (search La Ville au Tady gite).

The cottage stands in over one acre of fenced garden and woods. There are several fruit trees and walnut and sweet chestnut trees to provide welcome shade in the summer months. If vacationing in the autumn, you are welcome to help yourselves to any windfall. There is parking for two cars on a drive at the front. The rear of the cottage affords wonderful views over the garden. A patio at the rear provides an informal seating area for barbecues. A mown path through the grass provides views over surrounding fields and rolling countryside. A charcoal barbecue and garden furniture are provided.

Lovely Gite
We had a lovely week in this Gite. It’s in a very peaceful location, was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We enjoyed riding the bicycles around the quiet lanes and playing badminton in the amazing garden. We visited nearby Josselin with its beautiful Château and on the Friday evening we ate in one of the restaurants while being entertained with traditional Brittany music and dancing in the town square. A lovely relaxing holiday. Thank you so much.

4 days in June
What a wonderful away from it all property, exactly what we needed. Unfortunately we were there for just four days, could have stayed for the whole of the summer. Property is very well equipped and very comfortable. The garden wonderful to explore. Particularly liked the use of bicycles, perfect for use along the canal. Weather wasn’t brilliant but had a fantastic thunder storm on the first evening. Not knowing the area it was the perfect place to be able to explore, of which we did, making us want to return and explore some more. Many thanks Martin.

séjour très sympa , cadre très agréable et reposant , le ménage laisse à désirer, nous avons du passer l'aspirateur en arrivant et laver les tasses à café qui étaient sale . la communication avec les propriétaires est très sommaire

A relaxing holiday in a typical cottage!
We enjoyed our stay at "La Ville au Tady". The cottage is located about 4 miles outside Josselin. Many typical French villages in the neighbourhood worth a visit. All amenities were present, and the owner even provided cross-country bikes, but better be physically prepared as the hills can be steep ;-)

About the host

Hosted by Martin & Esther Selway

Host profile image
La Ville au Tady is owned by Martin, Esther, Beth & Meg and we live in the UK. After many happy summer holidays in France, we decided to buy our own holiday cottage in Brittany. After many months of property hunting, we discovered a traditional longère in the countryside and fell in love with it.
We feel very lucky to own such a beautiful old house, and invite you to share it when we are not holidaying there ourselves.

We believe there is an ethical dimension to owning a second home, so we price our weeks reasonably and aim to have the cottage occupied for most of the year. In this way we can help contribute to the local economy by employing our cleaner and gardener, and help generate income for local businesses. We encourage you to use the local village stores whenever possible. We would prefer to reduce our prices for late availability rather than remain empty, so provide a 25% discount for arrivals within 30 days.

Why they chose this property

Our cottage has been used as a holiday home for many years, and so presents a fairly unique opportunity to stay in a traditional longère that retains many of its original features. The exterior of the longère is much the same as when it was built in 1868. It is a traditional farm house of the region, and the internal renovations have preserved the character with exposed beams and fireplace hearth consisting of a massive granite stone.
The cottage is located in a quiet rural hamlet of four properties, and yet is just five minutes from the local village with boulangerie, village store, and bars. We are ten minutes from Josselin, one of the best small towns in Brittany.

What makes this property unique

This is our holiday home, and it is furnished and equipped with all the homely touches that will make it feel like you are a guest staying in a friends house, rather than a paying customer in a commercial holiday property. We invite you to share our books, our games, and our bikes.
When we holiday at La Ville au Tady we love doing so many different things! These are some of our favourites - countryside walks; swimming in the nearby open air pool or lake; cycling along the quiet country lanes; shopping for fresh local produce at Josselin market; picnic lunches in the sunny garden; exploring local towns and villages; meals out at one of the many good restaurants in Josselin; trips to the beach; or else just relaxing with a glass of wine and a good book in the garden.
