About the property

3 Bedrooms, Balcony, Large Patio, Heated Pool, Garden, Sea Mountain, veg & fruit

Our traditional Madeiran Quinta is a delightful family home, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's a traditional stone Quinta set on a small banana farm in beautiful tropical gardens, five minutes from Calheta beach and thirty minutes from Funchal. Sympathetically modernized and retaining the original character, creating a stunning mix of traditional Madeiran and contemporary, with the addition of a large modern patio/entertaining area with pool, outside kitchen with barbecue and gas hob. The original features of the old house remain, including exposed stone walls, beams, wooden floors, casement windows and the original bread oven in the kitchen. Decorated with antiques and vintage finds the Quinta has all mod cons, Wi-Fi in all rooms and on the patio. There is one king size bedroom with en suite shower room which opens onto the patio and pool, a family bathroom with bath and over head shower, a twin single bedroom that can also be made into a super-king sized bed, and double bedroom upstairs on the 2nd floor with patio balcony and fabulous garden, mountain and sea views. The large, modern patio area is the perfect entertaining or relaxing area, with a covered porch, locally hand made chestnut dining table and six chairs, six loungers for sun bathing. Surrounded by a high, curved traditional volcanic stone wall the patio and tropical gardens have views of the sea and the mountains all around. A lush mix of tropical palms, hibiscus, geraniums, hydrangea and cool lawns make up the pretty garden. The banana farm includes an organic vegetable patch with fruit trees and though out of bounds to visitors a complimentary basket of seasonal vegetables and fruit is provided on arrival and throughout your stay. Facilities include local Meo cable TV, DVD with a selection of English films, WiFi in all rooms, wood burner in the sitting room for winter evenings and several radiators/heaters for the bedrooms. The pool has a solar cover, pool heating in cooler months is charged at £70 per week. The price shown is for two guests, extra guests are charged a seasonal nightly rate, please email for details. There are steps into the garden and house plus stairs within the house and from the gated parking area making it unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues, there are also some low thresholds between the bedrooms, kitchen and sun room, this is all part of the character of an old house. The Quinta is a real family affair, a lovely local family help us run it, Joao (who also speaks Spanish) maintains the garden, vegetable patch along with the bananas, his wife Rosa is our wonderful housekeeper and their daughter Susana and her husband Marcio (both speak perfect English) are on hand to meet guests and help out when we are not available. We do our best to provide a home-from-home holiday in Madeira to families and couples. The house suits six people in the warmer months (May-September) and four in the cooler months (October-April).

Why Alison Cosier chose Arco Da Calheta

We fell in love with the Quinta at first sight. The previous owner had renovated the old stone house in keeping with the typical Madeiran style, retaining the original charm. We added the large patio area, pool, outside kitchen, sun room leading to the covered dining area, and wi-fi in all rooms. The Quinta is our family home, we feel part of the village and local community, who are warm and friendly. It is ideally situated for a relaxing holiday and for touring the island, it's just a five minute drive to the sandy beach and harbour at Calheta with a choice of bars, restaurants and the local supermarket.

What makes this villa unique

The Quinta is a charming Madeira stone family house full of character, offering great views, decorated with antiques and vintage finds, a wood burner in the sitting room takes the chill off cooler winter evenings. With the addition of a large patio area, swimming pool that can also be heated in winter for an extra fee, and outside kitchen barbeque surrounded by lush tropical gardens full of bird song. A great mix of contemporary and traditional. The mountain, village and sea views are stunning. One of the added bonuses of the house is the small banana farm and vegetable patch, which is tended by Joao, the husband of our housekeeper Rosa. We love picking fruit and veg for the table, it's one of the things we love most about staying here, fresh seasonal fruit and veg is also available to guests though the farm and vegetable area are out of bounds, Joao will keep the kitchen stocked up. The top bedroom has a large patio with great views and a table for four, a perfect spot for coffee in the morning or a romantic evening setting. The porch by the patio provides a covered dining area with a large hand made chestnut table and six chairs, the perfect spot for relaxing day or evening. Calheta beach is just five minutes drive away. It's in the sunniest part of the island, and a perfect base for exploring the whole of Madeira at any time of year.

A lovely, well equipped villa in a quiet location.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful location. It's only a 5 minute drive to Calheta and close to many other villages on the South coast of Madeira. I would strongly recommend this villa for a peaceful holiday with family and friends. Thank you Alison and Graham!

Perfect for a family holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We've had an amazing holiday at this Quinta, which is in a wonderful situation. The house itself is well-equipped and beautifully kept whilst the ozone pool was a delight for everyone. We ate out on the terrace every day and our "tweenie" loved his own space/balcony up high. We can't recommend this place enough and hope to return. Thank you for helping to make amazing family memories.

Great place to relax

  • 5 of 5

The house is an upside down house, with the bedrooms on the first and second floor and sitting room down stairs. The property is well equipped and the real selling point is the outside space. There is a covered patio area where we had breakfast outside each morning - not bad for early march. There are then loungers spread around the pool. The garden is sheltered and we got sun most of the day.

The property is well situated, with easy access to the main highway, although a bit out of the village so not easy to walk into the village.

A delightful, private base from which to explore Madeira

  • 5 of 5

In your dreams you have already been to Quinta Tabareu.

You will recognise it standing by the crystal clear water of the pool.

Look over there to the sub-tropical garden where later, you can take afternoon tea.

Beyond that to your car, parked securely behind electric gates.

Look ahead to admire the banana plantation (let us not call it a farm. So unromantic)

And so to the Quinta itself. Resplendent in cream and terracotta. The roof lines and elegant windows reminiscent of a pocket size version of a certain ranch just outside Dallas, Texas.

The Ewings could very well vacation here. The oil business isn’t what it was you know.

Dawn. Delight in the freshness of the main bedroom, when the sunlight streams through the windows bidding you to rise and take breakfast on the patio.

Nightfall. With clothes strewn, slip into the warm clear waters of the private pool. The village lights shine as fairy lights across the hillside. And, at last, lay back to contemplate nature’s most elusive and grandest of displays, the starry cosmos.

These are my recollections. You want to know about how well the kitchen is equipped? How clean the place is? Then you are with the wrong reviewer. There are plenty of others here who will tell you. Accurate they are. But I really must make mention of the local canine population. Some, perhaps most, will not notice, or be happy to put up with being serenaded by several dogs, all eager at any time to discuss amongst themselves the merits of a particular flavour of Bonio. It isn’t all the time though and when they are restless enough to give voice in the early hours, well, you did pack your ear plugs didn’t you?

Choose comfort. Choose special. Choose privacy. Choose relax.

Choose Arco do Calheta. Choose Cipriani. Choose home.

Choose Quinta Tabareu

Owner's Response: Dear Terry and Avril, Thank you for the BEST review an owner could wish for! The house attracts a certain kind of holiday maker who sees the house exactly as it is and enjoys the whole ambience of the traditional Madeiran Quinta, the sub-tropical garden and the modern patio and pool area. You describe your stay so eloquently that even the local dogs come out well despite their nocturnal serenading. Poor things are not treated well in Southern European countries where they are kept outside 24/7. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Quinta. All the very best, Alison

Interesting place, best for outdoor living

  • 5 of 5

Our trip to Madeira was one of our best ever, thanks to the vertical fantasy land atmosphere, general competence of the infrastructure (nice roads, etc.), good food, nice people and some of the greatest hikes in the world.

This quinta stands out for its charm and character (and reasonable price). For those researching where to stay, we will briefly list some possible issues to help you decide whether this is the place for you:

Unmentioned in the description or other reviews is that the indoor living area and dinning table is downstairs in a dark sub-level facing the back of the house/street. This may or may not matter to renters. There is a small "sun-room" with a few pieces of wicker furniture upstairs facing the pool. The house is a warren of rooms and halls, the opposite of "open plan". And some low thresholds mean taller people may have to walk around with heads lowered. HOWEVER, the outside area is divine - the pool, patio, barbecue hut, and outdoor dinning table would make for a very special location while staying home.

Don't put too much stake in weather forecasts. Even on "rainy" days (most of the time in the winter!) we got sun eventually and were able to swim almost every day.

The kitchen was generally competent - missing a few things like any vacation rental, but the appliances all worked fine. There is a gated parking area with sliding electronic door so you won't have trouble with where to keep your car.

We didn't eat locally, so can't recommend anything there. As for hikes: the Ponta de Sao Laurenco was hot and exhausting, but worth it. Nice green park at the end of the point for a picnic. Caldeira Verde levada has to be one of the best hikes anywhere, but good luck finding it (Google is useless) - might want to take a taxi from Santana. The Levada Rei was easy and beautiful, and not to crowded. Give 25 Fontes a pass - its a traffic jamb. The "Walk/eat Madeira" book has a nice hike around Ponta de Pargo that is great, but a brutal climb halfway through.

We thought the Monte Palace gardens were dreamy, well worth a visit. But do NOT drive there and expect to find parking - what a nightmare. Take the cable car from Funchal instead.

For Madeira wine, try Henrique & Henrique tasting room in Camara de Lobos - we splurged and a $25 bottle of 15 year aged dry and it was great company for much of the trip.

Finally, do not trust your car navigation or Google maps - they might take you down some scary, narrow, roads. Enjoy

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thoughts on Maderia, so glad you enjoyed your stay, it certainly is a great place to take a holiday. I also have to agree whole heartedly that the outside space at the Quinta is divine but disagree with your other comments on the inside. It is clearly stated in the description that the house is old with lots of stairs and a couple of points where taller folk may have to duck but it is certainly not a warren of hallways, there only being one hall. The sitting and dining rooms are clearly photographed in the description showing the beams, these rooms are not sub-level being on the ground floor at street level and as most guests are out all day exploring or enjoying the patio they are used only in the evening. This may account for the fact that it's not mentioned in any of the other reviews. It's all part of the charm and character of an old, traditional Madeiran property, and the reason why so many people love it. We were pleased to hear that it was your 'best ever' holiday and hope you return again soon. All the very best, Alison & Graham

Wonderful hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

Quinta Tabareau is very comfortable, clean & homely. The master bedroom bed is wonderful, with good quality linen allowing for a very good night's sleep. We paid a little extra so the pool would be heated for our stay & this was money well spent as we swam before breakfast every day. The pool area is perfect, although the weather was a little cool at times to take full advantage in the evenings. This was not a problem as we made full use of the wood burner & DVD library in the very comfortable living room. We particularly enjoyed revisiting the village of Dibley& its residents!! The Quinta is well equipped and the welcome pack of wine & fresh veg was very appreciated. There was only two of us but it didn't feel too big & yet there was plenty of room for more.... Tabareau is in a residential road with easy access to all the sites. We went whale watching with Lobosonda in Calheta and saw both common dolphins(lots of them) and 5 sperm whales. AMAZING! Lobosonda was a very professional & friendly company we would be very happy to recommend. All in all a lovely holiday and we returned rested & ready for 2017! Thank you Alison for your advice & pre-holiday information, much appreciated. Very quick return of house keeping deposit at the end of the holiday.

Owner's Response: Hello Lynn, Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your holiday in Madeira. We try to make the house as comfortable as possible, creating a home from home, so using good quality linen is a must. The patio is our favourite spot too, on a sunny day it can't be beaten! So glad you enjoyed your whale watching trip, it certainly is a highlight activity for many of our guests. We greatly appreciate your recommendation, and thank you for leaving the house so clean and tidy. All the very best to you both, Alison & Graham

If you fancy lunch or dinner Calheta beach and harbour is just a five minute drive away with bars and restaurants. The island has a wealth of beautiful levada walks and stunning mountain and coastal scenery to explore, with different flora and fauna in the varying micro climates found on the island.. Guided tours are available of the more rugged parts of the island, details at the Quinta. The Quinta is 30 minutes drive from Funchal, a bustling town with cobbled streets, a huge choice of restaurants and bars, shops, museums. Golf is available at Palheiro above Funchal and also at Santo do Serra near the airport, there are tennis courts in Arco. You can do paragliding from the top of the mountain in Arco, near the bar Costa Verde, or just sit on the patio by the pool watching them gliding around the thermals over the village. There is a small supermarket in Loreto selling basics and more, a pharmacy in Arco plus another little supermarket, bakery, hairdressers, post office, a couple of bars and a lovely church.
