Višnjan is a small Istrian town situated on the top of a hill. It is surrounded by forests, and is located 10km (6 miles) North-East of Poreč. The antique terrace on the square, which is entered through a Venetian arc, gives one a remarkable view of the sea. Ever since the days of Venetian rule, Višnjan had served as a renowned commercial centre, where all sorts of agricultural products and tools were being sold. Even today, every last Thursday of the month there is a traditional open market held there, which is a special attraction for people from all over Istria. visnjan-gastroAs you pass the stone road down the hill from the place where Visnjan is located, you will be able to see an early Gothic church od St. Anton the Abbot built in 14th century. The road leads to the city gates, which have been decorated in bas-relief with the motif of the Venice Lion from 1517 with the pride of the city hiding behind it – the old city square. The square has been partly surrounded by the city wall, which was built during the 13th and 14th centuries. The square contains a 27-meter high bellfry, a city lodge from the 18th century, a well, and a parish church of St.Kvirik and Julita dating back from 19th century. Whatever you need, you can find it in Višnjan: restaurants, supermarkets, coffee shops, a bank, a pharmacy, a medical centre, and a post office. In Višnjan’s surrounding area you can dine in one of the traditional Istrian taverns, where you will be able to enjoy the original Istrian specialities and get a taste of the region’s highest quality wines, Malvasia and Teran. Višnjan is a place of special interest to astrology lovers because of its internationally reputed Astronomical Observatory.
