4* historic town house in 1st village liberated WW2 D Day 6th June 1944

Overview

Property

Updated: 06-Dec-2016
2 miles from Utah Beach in superb location, perfect for couples or sleeps 4 max

This 300 - 400 year old house is in the village square right opposite the world known church of Sainte Marie du Mont, has been awarded 4* rating by French Ministry Tourism, the photo showing the 101st Airborne passing in front of the house on June 7th 1944, became known as The Band of Brothers, Easy Company.

Included in our price is a printed war tour, for you to do at your own pace, a complete overview of the area, maps, all linens, the beds are made up for you, water, heating, electricity, paper goods, even down to dishwasher tablets and naturally the end of stay clean.

Located right opposite the world famous Sainte Marie du Mont Church, the view out the bedroom has been described as one of the best in France... you can lie in bed looking at the ornate and unique bell tower, but do not worry the bells stop during the night!

Totally renovated in 2014 while retaining the character and history.

Upstairs partitions were knocked out to create the most gloriously proportioned master bedroom, plus a 2nd large double or twin along with a large bathroom room with a substantial Italian walk in shower, double sink unit plus a loo.

Downstairs we have created an open plan living area, a lounge with a fireplace where we installed a very efficient wood burner, leading into the dining room and onto the kitchen then out to the very sweet high walled garden with BBQ and patio...also downstairs a utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and a separate loo.

Best of all open the front door, one side you have shellfish shop selling oysters and moules direct from Utah Beach, so by just walking the length of the corridor you can return to the dining table with a dozen oysters for less than £5 - (fresher than any oysters possible as these come less than 4 miles), people come from miles to but these specialist oysters! The other side, 2 restaurants to choose from, across the street a local butcher, 2 bakers in the village, even a hairdresser...

We've tried very hard to beautifully present the house, with restored antique furniture, hand made curtains, even embroidered towels, along with all the things a traveller will appreciate like top quality linen on the beds, big fluffy towels, towelling dressing gowns & a hair drier with some puff!

The cupboards in the kitchen are stocked with oils, stock cubes etc. if my chickens are laying, some freshly laid eggs from our little farm.

WIFI throughout, washing machine, tumble drier...TV, French & English channels, DVD player.

Mont St Michel an hour away, Bayeux, American Cemetery, Omaha, Sword, Gold, Juno the other invasion Beaches less than 40 minutes. Point du Hoc, Grandcamp Maisy just the other side of the bay can be seen from the village. Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise all a matter of minutes away...then there is the National Park that we are in the heart of, which is a conservation area of significant importance, with the marshes that flood in the winter and in the summer are grazing for the world class trotting horses bred here and the famous Normandy cows, walks, bike rides, coastline, dunes, cliffs, the beautiful Utah Beach is less than 4 minutes away which is not just a memorial but a gloriously sandy beach with Oyster beds, seals that pop up beside swimmers from time to time, amazing bird life as there is a 1,200 hectare bird sanctuary on the beach, dolphins even seen, safe to swim, clean and not over crowded.

Needing car hire ? We can arrange it all for you - For example, If you are flying into France we can arrange for a chauffeur to meet you in the arrivals hall to take you to the station (or your hotel) and then on your arrival at Carentan station, a driver will be waiting for you as you alight the train to take you to your car hire.

As we don't have Sunday trading here and certainly nothing is trading when it's a big holiday check with us dates & day of arrival. The main car hire companies close for a 2 hour lunch still, even in the major cities, Sunday's are tricky too! We work with a local Renault dealership, because they stay open the whole day so it's not a problem to catch the 10.08 train from Paris to arrive at 12.47 - someone will be waiting at the station at this end for you.

The summer months, Saturdays are incredibly busy on the motorways, we really encourage folk to arrive mid week & enjoy the weekend here as there is always something going on...the only day of the week we can't operate is a Sunday, after 16 years here, we give up & have adopted the French way of life!

We are local and live here full time, we are on hand, can organize car hire, war tours, restaurant bookings - on your arrival, if you want the information, we give you maps brochures etc. on the area, where to go what to see and very useful tips about timings etc. We fully appreciate that a lot of our short stay guests have limited time here, & once realized how much there is to see & do we can help maximize your experience plus we're also on hand help with any emergency.

About the Owner

Working in London & living just outside London before taking the decision to leave our careers take the plunge to move here to Normandy in 2001, we had no plans to start vacation rentals...it just sort of happened! For me it is the answer to my dreams as I had over 15 years in the Hotel and Catering Industry, trained as a Hotel Manager...I always yearned for my own hotel, Mike never saw the attraction...so, this is as good as it gets! 15 years later we are thoroughly enjoying running our business,we are passionate about this hidden area of France and do offer more than just a vacation rental, we are more than happy to share with you where to go, what to see, how to get there, struck a deal with a local dealership to hire cars (as the car hire companies are so unaccommodating) - devised a WW2 tour which we will give you at no charge and we will even make reservations for you at restaurants. We now have 4 rental vacation properties, our beach house on Utah Beach which is 10 minutes away from where we are based, has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms with sea views and direct access onto the WW2 Invasion Beach Utah Beach Normandy, then in the village of Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated (Band of Brothers) right opposite the church we have a delightful 4* rated 2 bedroom stone town house... then, here where we live we have our 2 couples only units on our little farm where we have 2 nutty Jack Russell dogs, 8 cats, (all rescues), 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 sheep, 2 goats, a kune kune pig, 60 or so chickens plus our old faithful goose now 11 years old... oh ,and a couple of Turkeys rescued from the rigors of Christmas!

“Fantastic Experience - can't wait to return!”

5 of 5 starsReviewed October 5, 2014 NEW

My wife, Christine, and I have done Normandy before but we stayed in a hotel last time. This was so much better.

American friends recommended this place. It's a super little house in a superb location minutes' drive from Utah Beach but in the village square of Ste Marie Du Mont right opposite the church.

I can't praise the owners, Tansy and Mike, more highly. They couldn't have been nicer to deal with.

The house itself has all you could want having been newly refurbished. Tonight is our last night and we're having home-cooked seafood pasta. The mussels, fresh from Utah Beach, were purchased form the shop next door!

This is the way to experience Normandy!

Very special place

  • 5 of 5

Truly a gem. The house is cozy, well-equipped with all modern conveniences. Immaculate. The king bed, a rarity in France, is extremely comfortable. Everything is done with thoughts of creating a lovely stay, including the bathrobes and oversized towels. Great shower. The kitchen is remarkably well equipped. The location of the house is perfect-in a very quiet village near Utah Beach and a short drive from everywhere. There is a charcuterie about 100 yards away where one can buy wonderful take-away. Tansy, the owner, was available whenever we needed her and went the extra mile with helping us plan our sight-seeing, dining, etc. We loved our stay, were sorry to go!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your feedback - we are thrilled you enjoyed the house...you are right, a super kingsize bed in France is rare...we had a huge challenge getting it across to France...the manufacturers don't deliver to France & having it shipped by normal couriers was prohibitive in costs, finding someone with a van big enough with space certainly was the challenging part...so when someone notices it we feel very much 'it was worth it!'...

Wonderful Normandy House and Vacation SPot

  • 5 of 5

I just returned home from spending 8 days at the Band of Brothers House in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont during our Normandy vacation with my wife and friend. The property was all that was promised and as advertised, recently clean, the kitchen appliances new, and the whole house renovated. Tansy provided all the help we could ask for regarding local sights, information, tips and things to do. She gave us arrival information, made the booking process very easy, and provided lots of information regarding local sights that were better than other information we had obtained. Her local map of the area was excellent and we didn't need to use any other for all our driving in the area. The home was perfect from the downstairs rooms and kitchen to the bedrooms and redone full bathroom upstairs. Our only problem was that the weather was still a little chilly and we couldn't spend as much time in the beautiful back garden as we wanted. The location in the village allowed us to get a sense of life in France. The bakery around the corner provided us with its local fare fresh every morning, the restaurants next door for crepes every evening, and the butcher across the way (Not to mention the fresh shellfish next door). The village itself was charming and allowed us to get a real idea about the activity during the D Day operation. The village was well located for our day trips across all of Normandy, from Saint-Mere-Eglise, Mont-Ste-Michael, Honfluer, Liverot, and Bayeux to Balfleur and Cherburg. We would recommend this property for anyone wanting to spend some time in Normandy and experience a wonderful time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words...we can make sure the house is up to expectations but unfortunately we haven't found a way of harnessing the weather...I'm working on it! Normandy in May can be a little mixed, but you do get the blossom, which in my mind has been extra brilliant this year, with the scent quite heady in places, the cider apple trees now coming into bloom May & June our most favourite months. I'm glad you appreciated our efforts, we feel it is important to give all our guests the war tour we have put together along with maps and information to help maximize your time here at your own pace - there is a huge amount to see & do - we've lived here for over 15 years and still haven't seen everything!

BAND OF BROTHERS HOUSE

  • 5 of 5

“So much to say where do I start”

Well we have returned to Essex with memories of Normandy still fresh in our minds. We spent the most relaxing 10 days in a small village in Normandy and it took us back in time to village life. The church bells rang and we spent our time exploring and enjoying the house and surrounding area.

We never booked the Band of Brothers house because of its history and connection to World War II and the D-Day landings. We booked a beautiful two bedroomed house set in a French village on the Normandy coast. It was that and so much more! The house itself has everything you could ask for with an enclosed walled garden; perfect for our dog Parker. The house has history of its own and has been brought into the 21st Century by Mike and Tansy. Tastefully renovated it has all the conveniences of home. Modern American fridge, lovely bathroom with powerful shower, utility room, whilst still having the charm of a French house. Beautiful master bedroom which is sunny and light – windows which open inwards (why don’t we have them in England?) I could have sat and watched village life from there forever.

Our shopping needs were mainly met by Willy Senoville the local butcher, his shop I felt was like the heart of the village, meeting everyone’s needs meat, wine, cheese and French conversation. Not forgetting the boulangerie with bread and croissants to die for. We spent many evenings having barbecues cooked to perfection and timed by the church clock.

We enjoyed all the local markets shopping for fresh produce and I loved all my antique bargains – negotiating in pigeon French - five euros no more! Seafood is plentiful with mussels and oysters on the doorstep literally.

The house is ideally placed if you enjoy history especially if you have forces connections. The beaches are beautiful long and sandy, hard to imagine what went on there and in reflection very sad.

Would we return - in a heartbeat – would we move in – of course! My dream house in France and all renovated. We felt so welcomed and at home there. Thank you so much Mike and Tansy for sharing all of this with us. Louise, Kevin and Parker.

A beautifully renovated house in a charming village in Normandy

  • 5 of 5

The house has been renovated to a very high standard with so many lovely little touches. We spent a very relaxing Christmas week there and couldn't have asked for more. Tansy and Mike even provided a Christmas tree and lots of Christmassy ornaments.

The area is fascinating and we spent many hours wandering over the beaches, around the D-Day sites and in the museums. All to be recommended. All in all, a very successful week.

Additional pricing information

Pet Fee £42
Stay tax €2 per night, per person. This amount will be due to the owner upon arrival. Does not apply to children under 13 years.

We charge the same all year around, apart from Christmas week...why don't we do a lower rate off season? The days are shorter, the house is very comfortable so we find that folk stay 'at home' more so the cost of the heating, electricity, logs increases - we factor this across the board by not fluctuating the rate.
Christmas rate includes tree, decorations etc.
Prices are quoted 2 persons in 1 room...if you want 2 separate rooms there is a 30 euro linen charge.
Please do not travel on a Saturday in the summer months - traffic can be awful...we do any changeover day except a Sunday

Facilities

From the Owner

We have put everything we can possibly think of in all our houses, Mike has extensively travelled so we understand what is needed especially if you have just done a long haul flight! A chauffeur can meet you in the arrivals hall to take you to the station or your hotel & we can have a driver waiting for you as you alight the train to take you to the car hire location. Dressing gowns, big fluffy towels, hair driers, you name it we have tried to think of it! Plus we give you a complete overview of the area to include maps & a book but best of all we give you a FREE WW2 Tour for you to do at your own pace. With the Invasion Beaches, The Church, the history, close to the sea, the history of the property, the dimensions inside, the little garden at the back...it is delightful! Then only 40 minutes away you have Bayeux, Mont St Michel, St Vaast la Hougue a UNESCO site as well as the Invasion area to discover, the National Park, visit the cheese, sweet factories...and of course see cider, & calvados production...you cannot miss the apple tree here, in the spring the blossom, in the summer with the weight of the apples the trees are almost groaning! Haven't even mentioned the food!! ... This is just mentioning a few things to see and visit!
