About Ewen McHardy

Hi I'm Ewen the owner, and it's my aim for you to feel you at home from the minute you arrive. I have lived here for the past six years and although I spend time away I love to come back and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surrounding area. I enjoy relaxing beside the pool and inviting friends for a barbecue. I travel a lot and most of the furniture of the house has a real story behind them. For entertainment, the lounge has a flat screen TV with French as well as the terrestrial UK channels on satellite, though there are plenty things to do nearby ! We always leave a list of our favourites spots, shops and restaurants for our guest's use.

When I am away, Niyada manages reservations and takes care of our guests.

We hope you'll like our home, and wish you the most pleasant stay !

Ewen & family

Ewen McHardy purchased this villa in 2011

Why Ewen McHardy chose Bézenac

The house is very comfortable, with both fans and portable air conditioning for summer months and under floor heating for the cooler seasons. It offers a beautiful living area, spacious bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, well equipped open plan kitchen, dining table and living room with stunning view over the hill and swimming pool.

On the barbecue terrace behind the house, under the shade of 200 years old trees, there is a beautiful picnic area, for those who don't like direct sunlight.

We welcome those who like to travel with their pets, several guests with dogs have given positive reviews the past year.

This is a very comfortable home, the gardens are beautiful and the pool is well maintained. There is a lovely medieval 700 year old stone wall surrounding the house, which was in a sad condition, now it's a beautiful feature! We take pride in our home and we hope you will feel the same way from the moment you arrive.

There is broadband with printing facilities available for those who need to keep in touch with those pesky emails!

What makes this villa unique

Peace, privacy, comfort, top quality beds, beautiful nature and fauna, the swimming pool to cool down on a hot summer day! We can arrange taxis, restaurant bookings, doctor and dentist appointments......... Pick up from the train station or airport can also be arranged. Baby sitting services can be arranged if planned ahead of time.

Our house is located on a hill, between the villages of Beynac and St Cyprien. Beynac is a stunning medieval city, built on the cliff just above the dordogne river. Amazing scenery and fantastic gastronomy, Beynac is one of these unmissable villages that makes southern france so unique. St Cyprien is famous in the local area for its Sunday market : Butchers, organic vegetables, rustic bread loaves... Unlike the market in sarlat, St Cyprien's Sunday market is open all year for locals who know where to find the best of our Perigord produce. St Cyprien also offers canoe and hot air balloons tours. If you continue driving towards Bergerac for 45 minutes, you'll reach the vineyards, driving through Pecharmant, Bordeaux, Monbazillac and Bergerac vineyards. Just 20 minutes from home is the famous city of Sarlat, the beating heart of Perigord Noir.

Just behind the house, walking up the hill, you'll reach our recommended walking tracks. They'll take you through the forest, to either Fond Chaude hot water source, or Redon Espic church (where the virgin Maria appeared last century) in less than an hour.

The Dordogne river at the foot of the hill offers beautiful and quiet picnic areas.. but we'll leave you to discover it by yourself.

Beauiful House, garden and pool

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing to find fault with at Hibou Heureux. I have stayed in many houses over the years and this is one of the best. Very well equipped with all that you would expect to have in your own home. For families there is a lovely garden and open space to play in, the pool is a delight and its location ensures it gets heated naturally. Beds are very comfortable, excellent bathrooms and showers. Great BBQ area and covered outside eating area. We spent most of our evenings sitting out, eating, drinking and waiting for the hooting owls to start calling (hence the house name). Ewan (the owner) is a lovely man and is readily on hand if there are any problems. We only had one minor problem with the internet (which my daughter needed for an Skype interview) and Ewan went our of his way to find a solution for us (thank you again, Ewan!). He likes to keep the garden looking nice so do let him know if you are going to be out and that way it will stay nice!. He also makes sure the pool stays nice and clean. The house is close to St Cyprien which has a good supermarket so you do not need to go far for your essentials, it also has great market on Sundays. In conclusion we had a wonderful time and would not hesitate in recommending this others.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Martin and I'm glad that you had such a good time and it was a pleasure having you stay. Just to let others know, the internet outage was caused by the service provider doing a scheduled monthly maintenance. I do hope you'll plan future stays at the Happy Owl and look forward to a glass or two of nice chilled rose wine. Best wishes - Ewen

Just sublime

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at the Happy Owl was simply fantastic. The house and grounds are perfect for family groups with children the pool and BBQ are key amenities. The communication before our stay gave us terrific confidence. Our welcome from Ewen and his team and service throughout was also responsive and proactive. The location is perfect for half day and full day excursions throughout the Dordogne. Local restaurants are first class and markets are also close by. We would highly recommend this property.

Fantastic luxury holiday venue!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of eight stayed for a week at Le Hibou. We found it easily by using google maps navigation on our smart phones, this took us directly there (about 40 mins from the airports)

We had all the comforts of home that one expects such as premium bed linen, towels, cookware, dinner service, luxury plumbing, plenty of hot water, Full HD TV with smart functions via ChromeCast.

Two of the three double bedrooms were en suite and the 3rd is a shower room (there is a separate cloakroom). The mezzanine has a double sofa bed and the lounge a single bed settee.

Our hosts were very helpful and informative providing details of local attractions and the practical such as food shopping, markets etc.

The kitchen was very well appointed for regularly cooking for eight.... including induction hob, microwave, dishwasher (we used it a lot for our family catering) etc.

We used the excellent BBQ area of the every evening for dinner.

Unusually for France the Internet service speed provided was not just usable but very fast with strong wifi coverage throughout the property and pool area. As well as Internet access there is a colour printer & scanner that came in very useful for our boarding passes etc.

A phone service was also provided that provided free landline calls to Europe, North America, Australia etc. So this is a very good venue for the business traveller on vacation for a family holiday.

The swimming pool was a boon for our children and parents. It is very well maintained and has a very nice patio area.

The gardens are very well kept, the photographs that we saw do not do it justice, The views are idyllic. The property and its gardens are very quiet being situated next to woods.

When it was hot we just closed the power metal shutters to keep the house cool, and it was very effective.

Sarlat-la-Canéda and Saint-Cyprien are close by and of course the River Dordogne. We found that there are lots of attractions for all ages. The food and wine here is top notch in the world so eating and drinking was not a problem!

There is plenty of parking space for three cars just outside of the triple garage.

We had a fantastic time, all too often when we stay somewhere I feel that we have been “nickle & dimed”, not the case with our stay at Le Hibou Heureux!

We found very good value flights to Bergerac and Brive airports (we travelled via Brive).

Perfectly equipped house in a lovely quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Prior to arrival with our two dogs the owner made contact several times to check if there was anything we needed to enhance our stay - this even included the dogs requirements (very impressive). Finding the villa was not easy but this was mainly down to the homeaway directions. Once we had spoken to the owner we easily found it. The villa was spotless, gardens beautiful and pool inviting. We had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and that's exactly what we did! This villa is perfect if you want some space and peace and quiet but also be close enough to find somewhere for dinner and access all the numerous beautiful sights around the area. Would we go back? Yes definitely - we had a wonderful time. Do note that homeaway say this has 1 bathroom - it actually has 1 bath/shower room and 2 good sized shower rooms.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for your kind review, we look forward very much to your next visit, I've never seen such happy dogs so they obviously enjoyed their holiday too! I have contactd HA and edited the information on he bathrooms and toilet and will also improve the directions so guests can find us easier, some GPS systems are easier than others to use and I have found that people are directed down unsuitably narow roads for larger vehicles, you did the right thing to contact me for the last few kms because one or two lanes are VERY narrow. Best wishes, Ewen

Beautiful & Private

  • 5 of 5

When you arrive at this property you come in through a beautiful gate and pull in to a spacious parking area. Then you walk around to the main entry and are greeted by a huge, perfectly landscaped garden. The outdoor space here is completely amazing! When we arrived everything was in full bloom and so tranquil. There is forested area surrounding the property with just one neighbor at the far end across the road. The pool is the perfect place to sit and just RELAX. I want to note that there is lavender and bees love lavender. The bees didnt bother us at all (and we have 2 kids ages 9 & 10) and we hung out and had meals outside a lot, but I could see how some people might be nervous about bees.

The house itself is also beautiful and has 3 bedrooms with double (queen or king) sized beds and 1 mezzanine with a double bed. The bedrooms all have lovely modern baths but keep in mind that this is France and toilets are separate. There are 2 toilets, one in the master and one in the main hallway. The rest of the house was very comfortable with plenty of seating and a kitchen stocked with the basic tools most people would need to make meals. There is also a BBQ area out the kitchen door that we used almost every day.

The house is a few minutes drive from all kinds of things: a pizza place is closest, canoe rentals (on the river Dordogne), a zip line place, several castles and the village of St Cyprien that has restaurants, a large grocery store & a market on the weekend.

Ewen was a great host and shared a bottle of Rose with us one night. He was flexible and accommodating. We had a great time and the kids wanted us to move in and stay forever! We would be happy to go back during our next trip to France.

Beautiful house, gardens and location.

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable house with everything you need provided. All towels, including pool towels for each guest, which cut down on luggage. Spacious kitchen, really well equipped and open dining/living area . We arrived late evening and found tea, coffee and milk waiting for us. The house looks new but you don't feel intimidated by it, it has a lovely relaxed feel and we all felt at home. Lovely bathrooms and shower rooms. The rear of the house is hugged by a huge wall with a domed top and the gardens are vast but secure.

Only found one tea towel so made a call and a pile were delivered the same afternoon, great service! Later found the rest in the well equipped laundry room!

WiFi, DVD and english TV channels were very welcome on quieter days and the odd rainy afternoon. Inflatables for the lovely pool were provided along with a pump to inflate and deflate which was a thoughtful touch.

Fabulous gardens, well tended by the lovely Jean, and a really beautiful, secluded location so we felt "away from it all" but everything you need is close by. Bakery 5 mins away for fresh bread, croissants and pain au choc in the morning and a large supermarket less than 10 mins away. Perfect.

There is so much to do here! We travelled between 10 and 40 minutes away and there was so much choice. Caves with a quirky little electric train, arial adventure parks (wear trainers and trousers to be comfortable!) and the most beautiful medieval towns and markets galore. Our favourites were Domme, Sarlat, Beynac and St Cypriene. market days were busy so get there early or if you prefer fabulous architecture, go on a non market day.

Canoeing, hot air balloon rides (we loved it!) and on quieter "pool" days the gardens back onto the forest and deer, boars, owls and woodpeckers were all seen and heard.

40 mins away the Quercyland waterpark was really good value for all ages at only 9 Euros per person for a full day but they only take cash so be prepared. food was reasonable, but you can take your own picnic and hire a picnic bench and shade for the day. A great success with our 4 and 11 year olds , so we went twice.Have happily recommended this house to our family and friends and would definitely return as there is so much more to see and do.
