Spacious historic 17th Century Cotswolds Cottage for all Seasons

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,420 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Sleeps 5-8; 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms

Green Cottage is a substantial grade II listed cottage in one of the most sought after villages in the Cotswolds. Built in the 1600's as two labourers cottages, Green Cottage has been frequently extended in the 20th century to keep it upto date with modern living standards. The existing owners' contribution includes a stylish CP Hart bathroom and installing the Cotswold born 'Everhot' range cooker in the kitchen. The property makes a perfect base for exploring the key towns and villages of the Cotswolds, or walking its hills and valleys. For celebration dinners or otherwise, the well known landmark, the Lamb Inn is within a stones throw of the cottage. For those wanting to enjoy alfresco dining amidst the delights of an English country garden, Green Cottage has a wonderful terrace on the edge of the Windrush Valley. If the days are cold and wet, go indoors, bake on the Everhot, enjoy a roaring fire in the lounge or toss a log on to the wood burner in the dining room. For the children there is plenty of space in the garden (and the house) for them to run around and indoors there is a full size bar football table and plenty of games. Whatever the season and weather Green Cottage has something special to offer.

The accommodation provides a great degree of flexibility. 3 bedrooms comprise of a family room and ensuite (sleeping up to 5); a twin room; a single room; a sofa bed in the sunroom and a camp bed that can be placed pretty much anywhere! It therefore comfortably sleeps 5-8.

Green Cottage is steeped in history. The original bread oven is still to be seen in the dining room. In 1914, Green Cottage was occupied by the Soul Family. Mrs Soul sent 5 sons to the First World War. It is said that Mrs Soul lit a candle each night in one window to guide her boys back but none ever returned. No British family lost more sons in the Great War. Great Rissington church contains pictures and details of the Soul brothers. There is also futher information in Green Cottage.

New for the 2013 season is an Everhot range cooker. Manufactured not far from Gloucester, this state of the art cooker provides a constant heat source together with three ovens, an induction hob as well as hotplates. It's perfect for hosting large parties or for those wanting to try out new cooking experiences. In addition, in the large garden to help energetic children (and Dads) run off their energy and develop silky football skills, a Samba 12ft x 6ft goal has been set up...so don't forget your football!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Worried about the road outside? Don't be. It's a village loop road and doesn't 'go' anywhere, so it's only used for access. When our car alarm went off one night (due to an open sunroof & yes it did rain!), we didn't even hear that. Although we did have to apologise to the neighbours - they don't build houses now, like they used to!!! Accommodating 5 people is an easy number, with 2 double rooms and one single bedroom. But due to the flexibility of the bed arrangements we can accommodate up to 8 people (PLEASE NOTE. Rental rates are for a maximum of 5 people. There is an additional charge for each extra person of £35/£50 depending on no. of nights / per week).

Kids will love the space indoors and outdoors that this cottage has to offer. With lots to occupy them with games, indoor playhouse & pretend cooking to a climbing frame with a slide and swing set in the large garden. [The garden does have a pond at the far end, which is screened off (we have youngsters, so we know the concerns!)]. If they need some down time, then there is a dvd player; some kids dvds available to watch; free view with cbeebies; WiFi is also available. If you have a little one, then there are some bath toys, a high chair and a travel cot to use. When the garden is in season, there are different fruits (apples, pear, rhubarb, gooseberries, black/red currants, plums, raspberries) & fresh herbs. Everyone loves a fresh bit of veg or fruit on their plates, picked by their own hand, so do help yourself. Unfortunately, we can't have pets of any kind, due to the owner being highly allergic.

Great for families, beautiful large garden, historic house

  • 5 of 5

My mother and I stayed here for six nights in May with my two children (ages three and one). The house was packed with toys, books and games. However, my daughter's favorite part of the house was the backgarden- she loved exploring and using the play equipment pretty much every day of our stay.

We spent two days exploring the Cotswolds (the house is well situated for this) and had great day trips to Oxford, Blenheim Palace, And Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The house has three bedrooms and could easily fit several more people. We had great weather on our trip and hope to be back soon!

Great for families!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was everything we could have wanted for our short stay. The kitchen was well equipped, comfortable beds and plenty of toys for our children (ages 3 and 1). The back garden was gorgeous! I would highly recommend Green Cottage to anyone looking for a nice break in the Cotswolds!

Unique and Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Green Cottage, and it certainly won't be our last. It's one of the most unique properties we've ever stayed in, with the part of the house dating back to the 1600's. And while much of the lovely Cotswold stone is preserved inside and out, all of the rooms are completely updated (particularly the kitchen and master bathroom). Anita and Jeremy, the owners, are absolutely lovely to work with. We met them on this trip and received a thorough tour of the cottage (along with its history) and the beautiful gardens.

The cottage has a spacious patio with plenty of furniture for lounging or eating al fresco, and a barbecue that we used several times. The garden has mature apple, plum and pear trees as well as lovely flowers and ferns, and the space seems to go on forever. The Lamb Inn, which is less than a block away, serves much more than just pub food and you should definitely go there at least once during your visit.

The cottage is so comfortable that you may not want to leave it, but there are so many incredible historical sites within a 30-to-90 minute drive: Stratford-Upon-Avon; Warwick Castle; the incredible ruins of Kenilworth and Sudeley Castles; the Roman ruins at Cirencester; Blenheim Palace; and the lovely town of Bourton-on-the-Water, which looks like something out of a Miss Marple mystery.

We have rented a number of places on our trips to England, and Green Cottage is probably the most unique and lovely place we've stayed.

Fantastic weekend cottage in lovely village

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at Green cottage. It was just as described and pictured -idyllic. Our children (4 and 8) kept themselves entertained the entire weekend - between the garden, toys, dvd's - we did not even have to leave the house. The location is fantastic as it is near all the Cotswold attractions. We are really looking forward to our next stay.

Owner's Response: As the review was such a lovely comment, we were unable to establish if the 3* was intended or given in error. We just wanted to add in the following, sent to us after our guests stay: "Thank you again for letting us stay at your cottage. It was very comfortable and perfect for our needs. The children loved the toys and garden toys and DVDs and I enjoyed cooking on the Everhot. Cotswolds is a lovely area. We had a lovely walk on Sherborne estate." We always love to receive feedback from our guests and if ever there are ways of improving our guests stay, we take them on board too.

This cosy cottage was well set up for a family.

  • 5 of 5

Our family, 2 adults and 4 children, had a wonderful time at Green Cottage. It was very well equipped, the duvets in particular were very cosy. We enjoyed walking around the village of Great Risington as well as venturing further afield to discover the other small villages close by. The Lamb Inn had great food and is only a couple of minutes walk from the cottage. We would highly recommend staying in Green Cottage.

Great Rissington is in the heart of the cotswolds located neatly between the three jewels of the Cotswolds, namely Stow on the Wold, Bourton on Water and Burford. There is so much to do and see. There's The Slaughters, Bourton on Water (Maze, Birdland, Model Village, Car Museum), Barringtons (Annual Gifford Circus), Batsford Arboretum, Cotswold Farm Park, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Bibury (Trout Farm). Or easy day trips to Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Stratford, Cheltenham (races), Warwick Castle, not forgetting the huge amount of Roman history in the area. Or perhaps old houses are your interest. There's Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle to name just a couple. And if you don't want to sightsee, the countryside lends itself to lots of wonderful walking - it's a great way to see and appreciate the Cotswold landscape and you can walk right from the front door of the cottage - no need to get in the car!
