Horseshoe Cottages is one of a pair of traditional Cotswold stone cottages, located in the heart of the peaceful village of Lower Swell. The village has a traditional Cotswold pub, The Golden Ball Inn, and is surrounded by stunning countryside, as well as being just a mile away from the famous market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. Lower Swell is well placed for visiting the many beautiful towns and villages of the Cotswolds, as well as further afield places, such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Blenheim Palace.
The cottage has traditional character features, including some exposed Cotswold stone walls and oak beams, window seats and a large wood and coal burning stove. The character of the cottage is complemented by its modern facilities, including wireless internet access, two TVs and a well presented kitchen.
The cottage sleeps a maximum of five people, in three bedrooms, with one bathroom. There is a large, enclosed garden and free on street parking is readily available. Horseshoe Cottages is an ideal location for friends, couples or a family, seeking peaceful tranquillity in the heart of the Cotswolds.
Booking and payment
Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own or manage any of the cottages listed on our website. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.
For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.
All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.
Security deposits are not required (please note that guests are still liable for any damage or additional cleaning required as a result of their actions).
The maximum occupancy of the property, including its grounds, is five guests, at any point during your stay. Unauthorised over occupancy is a breach of our terms and conditions and may result in the cancellation of your booking and additional charges. Please consult us prior to booking if you wish to discuss the possibility of having more than five guests at the property.
Up to two medium sized dogs are accepted, at a cost of £20 per dog per booking. Please note that, although the property's garden is large, the cottage itself is relatively small.
For the comfort of future guests, we ask that dogs remain downstairs, stay off the furniture and that no trace of a dog remains after your departure.
The property has a large, enclosed garden, however, it is possible that an unsupervised dog could try to get out onto the road by the cottage.
Bed linen and towels
Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.
Arrival and departure times
Arrival time is after 3pm and departure time is by 10am. Access is via a hidden key, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.
Bed sizes and configurations
Bedroom 1: Double bed;
Bedroom 2: 2x single beds;
Bedroom 3: Single bed.
Family bathroom: Bath with overhead shower, wash basin and toilet.
Heating, fuel and logs
The property has an oil fired central heating system.
Electricity and oil are included in the letting price. There is a multi-fuel stove in the living room and an initial basket of logs is provided between October and April. Further logs are available locally.
The property has free wireless internet access and a Freeview TV with DVD player.
There is no telephone at the property, however, mobile phone reception is generally OK.
Free on street parking is readily available next to the cottage.
Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.
Child friendly facilities
A travel cot (without linen) and a high chair are provided. There are also a bed guard and a fire guard available. There is no stair gate, however, the ground floor of the cottage can be enclosed by closing the living room door.
The property's large garden is enclosed, however, please note that the main areas of the garden are not visible from the house.
A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, milk, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.
Accessibility, health and safety
This is an old property and has character features, including relatively narrow and steep stairs, low beams and door heights, and two floors, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.
The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.
Horseshoe Cottages is located on the B4068, which is the primary road through the village. Whilst it is not a major road, it can experience increased traffic at certain times of the day, due to its proximity to nearby farms. Guests with children and pets should take particular care to ensure that the front door to the cottage is not left open, as there are only a few metres between the front door and the road.
No smoking is permitted throughout the property.

Car: Lower Swell is easily accessible by car, being one mile from Stow, which is located at the junction of seven roads, including the A429 (Fosse Way).
Train: The nearest railway station to Lower Swell is Kingham (approximately 6 miles away), which has regular, direct services to London Paddington, with a typical journey time of approximately 90 minutes.
Plane: Birmingham International Airport: 45 miles, approximately 60 minute drive; Heathrow International Airport: 75 miles, approximately 90 minute drive; Bristol International Airport: 70 miles, approximately 90 minute drive.
