FERNIE Mindrum - A Superb Property - Sleeps 12 - With Beautiful Views

Updated: 26-Oct-2016
Sleeps 12, 6 Bed, 4 Bath - Idyllic Getaway, Families & Groups, Outdoor Pursuits

A superb property in an outstanding setting with superb views over rolling farmland to the Cheviot Hills beyond, Fernie provides an idyllic destination for families, larger groups and lovers of the great outdoors to get away from it all and explore the magnificent surrounding countryside.

An impressive conversion of a barn and former shepherd’s cottage, the accommodation at Fernie is wonderfully light and bright with fabulous views from every room. The open plan living areas are ideal for large groups with a spacious kitchen and mezzanine level sitting room, more formal drawing room and separate dining room. Original exposed beams, working fireplaces, unusual antique items and interesting artwork and objets d’art add charm and character.

Fernie’s extensive outside space offers a choice of places to relax and enjoy the views and for children to play. To the front of the house is a south facing courtyard garden with outside seating area, barbecue and fish pond; perfect for that morning cup of coffee or cocktails in the evening with stunning views of the Cheviot Hills. To the rear of the house is a secluded walled garden, planted in traditional cottage style with old fashioned roses and hardy perennials which provides an idyllic spot for relaxing with a good book under the damson trees. Accessed from the walled garden through a pergola adorned with rambling roses and clematis flowering throughout the summer, a large flat lawn provides the ideal setting for a game of football or croquet.

To the rear of the house are two paddocks perfect for guests wishing to bring their own ponies and horses. Surrounding the paddocks is a woodland margin walk, planted 15 years ago by the existing owners with a mixture of cherry trees, hazel copses, birch as well as old fashioned roses and briars, with a blaze of daffodils during the spring; ideal for the early morning walk with the dogs.

Fernie sits on the stunning Mindrum estate which guests are welcome to explore. Midrum is situated in an enviable position on the northern edge of the Cheviot Hills, the rolling blanket of hillsides that slope and swell amidst the 400 square miles of Northumberland’s National Park. The estate encompasses a diverse range of landscapes including a meandering river valley, ancient wetlands, a celebrated quintessentially English country garden and dramatic rolling hills with magnificent views across the National Park.

There are fabulous walks from Fernie without needing to go near a road. From the house one can enjoy a bracing walk to the upland reaches of the estate where you will be rewarded with magnificent views across rolling Northumbrian countryside towards the heather-clad Cheviot Hills. Or walk through peaceful rolling farmland to the Bowmont Water, a pretty river perfect for picnics, paddling and learning to fish.

Wildlife lovers and photographers will be enthralled by the variety of birdlife that can be seen on the recently re-established ancient Mosses (wetlands) including skylarks, shelducks, plovers, and a wide range of songbirds, waders and waterfowl depending on the season. A range of river life such as kingfishers, dippers and otters can be seen on the Bowmont and the estate is also home to roe deer, hares, and red squirrels. During the spring, young guests in particular will enjoy seeing the new born lambs and calves in the fields around the farm.

Mindrum also boasts a magnificent garden which is regularly open to the public throughout the summer, described as “A magical combination of rose gardens, foxgloves, lawns, woods and water” it is a delightful spot to spend time on a summers day.

Superb walks from the doorstep range from leisurely rambles along the Bowmont Water and surrounding farmland to more challenging hill and moorland treks in the Cheviot Hills. With more than 600 miles of footpaths and bridleways to choose from in the National Park alone, walkers are spoilt for choice. Cyclists are equally well provided for with miles of marked routes and quiet country lanes to explore offering everything from meandering river valley saunters to wild open moorland blasts. Popular routes include the Pennine Cycleway and the Reivers Cycle Route, both of which run through the National Park.

The stables at Kimmerston just down the road offer riding in the Cheviot Hills as well as rides on the spectacular sandy beaches on nearby Holy Island. Stabling and grazing is available to guests wishing to bring their own ponies or horses at additional cost.

There is fishing by arrangement for grayling, sea trout and brown trout on the pretty Bowmont Water which runs through the estate. The cottage is only a ten minute drive from the River Till one of the area's best kept secrets with an impressive sea trout run each spring. The lower and bottom beats of the legendary River Tweed are also within easy driving distance. Other field sporting opportunities are available at Mindrum or in the immediate area subject to availability and at additional charge. Please contact us for further details.

Despite Mindrum’s rural location, the estate is remarkably accessible with good local amenities close by. The cottage is 11 miles from Cornhill on Tweed which offers an excellent village shop selling pies and delicious local goodies and the Collingwood Arms which has a lively bar and restaurant specialising in dishes prepared using the wealth of local produce on offer. More extensive shopping including a good range of independent shops, pubs and restaurants are available at Kelso and Wooler which are 21 and 23 miles respectively.

Some of the cleanest and emptiest beaches in England can be found on Northumberland's spectacular Heritage Coastline, half an hour’s drive from the cottage. One of our favourite spots is Bamburgh Beach, with miles of pristine sand nestled behind huge sand dunes. At low tide take a trip across the causeway to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne or take a boat to the Farne Islands to see the resident colonies of Grey Seals and an impressive array of birdlife including Puffins.

The stunning coastline provides the perfect opportunity to try your hand at kite surfing, sailing or coasteering. For something a little different, gliding is available at nearby Millfield. Clay pigeon shooting and archery is also available locally and beginners are very welcome.

The region’s rich and often bloody history is reflected in the magnificent chain of castles that punctuate the landscape. Those nearby the cottage include dramatic Bamburgh, perched high on its rocky outcrop, the vast, romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh, the palatial splendour of Floors, Chillingham, reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in England and home to the world’s only herd of wild cattle and foreboding Alnwick, made famous as the location for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films.

Mindrum is also close to Flodden Field, site of the infamous battle of 1513 between the Scots and the English the 500th Anniversary of which is commemorated this year with Britain’s first cross-border ecomuseum. Another favourite local attraction, popular with old and young alike, is the delightful miniature steam railway which runs from Heatherslaw to Etal.

Further afield, the magnificent city of Edinburgh is only about an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train from nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Fernie’s well-presented accommodation comprises the following:

Large farmhouse kitchen with stunning views of the hills and double French doors onto the south facing courtyard garden. The extensively-equipped kitchen includes a 4 oven Aga, 2 gas hobs and an electric oven, a full size fridge, freezer, dishwasher, kitchen island and a large breakfast table. Leading from the kitchen is a large larder with plenty of space for storage of food. NB a chest freezer is provided in the back kitchen.

Guests have a choice of relaxing in the drawing room with a large open fire, TV with Freeview and DVD, and built in drinks cabinet complete with fridge, or the mezzanine level sitting room both of which are accessed from the kitchen and offer comfortable seating and superb views.

A lovely house, with everything we needed.

The communal spaces, particularly the kitchen were all fantastic, and the bedrooms and bathrooms were all well equipped with quality bed linen etc,
