Sleeps 4, 2 Bed, 1 Bath - Ideal for Walking, Cycling, Fishing and Shooting

A charming, traditional cottage overlooking the River Whiteadder, Robber's Cottage is part of the Ellemford Estate, set amidst 3,000 acres of spectacular countryside on the edge of the Lammermuir Hills near Duns.

A very pretty, stone property, Robber's Cottage comes complete with roses around the door and fabulous views from the front of the house over the river to open countryside beyond. The cosy interior is light and cheerful with bright nautical colours and painted furniture set against earthy Farrow & Ball walls.

Guests have use of the wider estate which extends to some 3,000 acres. There is excellent walking from the house from gentle ambles in the hills or along the river to serious hikes following Scotland's Coast to Coast walk, the Southern Upland Way, which runs very close by the estate. Keen cyclists can enjoy exploring quiet lanes and miles of forest tracks. Walked up shooting and roe stalking can be arranged on the estate accompanied by the gamekeeper and clay pigeon shooting is available locally.

For golf enthusiasts, some of Scotland's most challenging golf courses are only an hour's drive from the estate. Links courses nearby include North Berwick, Luffness, Gullane, Muirfield, Archerfield, Goswick and Dunbar or go inland to the Championship Roxburghe course on the banks of the River Teviot.

Fishing can be arranged with the head keeper (at additional cost) on a two mile double bank stretch of the River White adder (a tributary of the River Tweed) which runs below the cottage. The typical pattern sees a run of spring fish from February through to the end of April. From May there is superb sea trout fishing at night with the occasional salmon running throughout the summer. The traditional main run of salmon is at the end of the season with the larger fish entering the river from September onwards. Prime Tweed fishing is within a 30 minute drive from the house.

The beautiful sandy beaches at St. Abbs and North Berwick are great for walking, swimming, sandcastles, beach cricket, surfing and mackerel fishing. The cliffs at nearby St. Abbs, a designated Nature Reserve, are the breeding and nesting grounds for thousands of sea birds, and seals are also common.

Ellemford is 6 miles from Duns, an attractive market town with a good range of local shops, cafes and pubs and a museum dedicated to local motor racing legend Jim Clark. Also nearby is Manderston, said to be the perfect example of an Edwardian country house and home to the only silver-staircase in the world. Edinburgh is just an hour's, very pretty, drive away.

Robber's Cottage is at the end of a row of terraced cottages. The accommodation benefits from oil central heating as well as an open fire, and is configured over two floors; details are below:

Ground floor

Sitting room with views over the White adder and a log burner (logs provided). TV with Freeview and wi fi.

Snug / reading room.

Kitchen with dining table (seats 4), electric oven with 4 ring hob, fridge with freezer box, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave.

Utility room.

First floor

Bedroom one with double bed.

Bedroom two with twin beds.

Bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and WC.

Please note that the stairs to the first floor are quite steep.

Mobile reception and land line

The mobile reception at Ellemford is poor or non-existent on most networks. A land line is provided and is free of charge for reasonable use.


There is an outside seating area at the front of the house with a bench overlooking the river. To the rear is a sloped lawn. There is off-road parking for two cars to the side of the house. Guests have use of the wider estate which extends to some 3,000 acres.


Dogs are welcome. They must be kept to the ground floor of the cottage. Dogs must be kept on a lead when walking on the estate between July and February.

Facilities for babies

A travel cot and high chair are usually available on request subject to availability.
