About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

In the pretty village of Change, situated just 2 minutes from Nolay in the Valley de la Cozanne, and on the ‘Route des Vignobles de Beaune à Cluny’, you will find this very comfortable 3 bedroom former winemaker’s house.

Built at the turn of the 19th Century it was one of the traditional houses of the longstanding winemaker ‘Domaine Georges Guérin’ in Change. The lower level served as a ‘Cave’ holding large barrels of wine, and the first floor was used as the living area with access to the rear garden and its unique ‘pigeonnier’.

100 years later, Gérard Martini, fell in love with the house and gave it a new name, ‘Le Pigeonnier’. He has completely restored the property, conserving much of the original charm & antique furniture but at the same time has created a well equipped home with a delightful bathroom & cleverly designed kitchen, satelite TV, Audio and free Wi-fi. You will enjoy original ‘Art Noveau’ elements such as floral and geometric floor tiles, the rosace, stained glass. Now recently the property has been bought by Karl and christine De Bruyne who will keep the spirit of the house intact who have decided to open up the attic exposing the original beams and typical stone wall.

Outside: You arrive at the walled courtyard and double gates. There is ample parking for 2 cars here in the courtyard. An original well has been turned into a pretty fountain feature.

Wide steps lead to the upper garden and outdoor dining area. A wooden table and 6 chairs under metal framed gazebo with outdoor kitchen and BBQ provide the perfect ambiance for al-fresco dining. A wood store can be found by the back door – wood supplied for those cooler summer evenings.

The garden is fully enclosed and has many flower and shrub borders.

At the rear of the property you will see 'Le Pigeonnier' (giving the name to the property) which has been nicely restored. Next to it there is the swimming pool and the little spa with, sauna, shower and gym with a professional fitness bike. In the court-yard you can play table tennis, petanque

Biking and hiking: The 'Pigeonnier' is ideally located for your biking and hiking activities. There is detailed information in the house where to bike and hike.

Behind the property you find the recently opened 'VOIE VERTE' (Green Way') built on the old railway track: ideal for hiking, biking and even roller skating. When you go to the right you pass the beautiful Maranges vinyards ( UNESCO world heritage), you come down to Santenay with it's nice Castles, you can turn right again and continue along the 'Canal du Centre'.

EXTRA: there are 8 (!) Bikes for your use (free of charge): 4 mountain bikes for adults, 1 city bike, 2 MTB's for children of different ages and one little bike with supporting wheels for a real 'youngster'. We provide 2 bike-baby-seats plus enough helmets.

Wine and wine making: Our neighbours 'the Monnots' are vintners (Domaine Monnot-Roche). If you are interested, Christophe can explain a lot about the wines and wine making. Of course you can taste his Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru, Chardonnay, Aligoté...

About Karl De Bruyne

We are Christine and Karl De Bruyne, married for about 25years with 2 daughters Hannah (23) and Emma (21). We live in Belgium in a village near Antwerp.

Karl De Bruyne purchased this house in 2014

Why Karl De Bruyne chose Saone-et-Loire

Burgundy is a region we have been visiting numerous times over the years, usually returning home with a trunk full of delicious wines. In July 2013 we started thinking of buying a house in Burgundy and started our search which lasted about 8 months and took as several drives up and down. We were on the verge of abandoning our search when we fell upon “Le Pigeonnier”. It was love at first sight and by the end of the next week the deal was sealed.

What makes this house unique

wonderfully situated amidst hills, vineyards ( UNESCO "climats") in a very quiet village not far away from towns with restaurants and commerces within cycling distance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived Wednesday evening after a flight from NYC thru London to Paris and a four hour drive to Change.

Christine and Gerard greeted us in front of your gite and showed us around.

They are very kind.

Have been on a "whirlwind" touring the area. The Cote de Beaune villages are so scenic and way beyond our expectations. We have toured many areas of France, but this is fantastic in its beauty and superb food and wine.

After exhausting ourselves for the first two days we decided to cook in tonight..which gave a chance to really enjoy our home.

We now understand why you fell in love with the Pigeonnier and Change. We have too.

Wish we had arranged to say longer.

Thanks for letting us stay in your lovely country home.

Nice place with character

  • 5 of 5

Our holiday was perfect thanks to Karl and Christine. House is very nice and on the very calm place, close to the main vineyards of Beaune region. House was clean and big enough for the group of 6 people. Pool and sauna was great also. We recommend the property and hope will come back again. Thank you!

Charming home

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this charming home and appreciated fantastic communication with the owner. We had a problem with ants, not uncommon in an old farmhouse I suppose, and the owner responded promptly to remedy the situation.

Upon our arrival, the woman that checked us in discovered that the house was not completely clean. There were dirty towels in one of the bathrooms and no clean ones. Again, she promptly took care of that. I would have given 5 stars except for these 2 things.

The location was convenient for exploring the area. The listing description is accurate. I would gladly stay here again.

Nice, spacious home with well equipped kitchen

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 were very comfortable in this cute, rustic home. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking our meals. The second small refrigerator was appreciated, one would not have been enough.

The amenities were great - we enjoyed the sauna, the fireplace, the espresso maker, the good Wi-Fi, and were able to park two cars in the spacious courtyard.

The location was good for wine tasting - it's about 30 minutes to Beaune. The area was nice and quiet, but we found ourselves getting in the car to go to the bakery or grocery store. Someone younger and more ambitious could walk or ride the bikes to Nolay (2 km).

Be aware that one of the upstairs bedrooms is not completely closed off -so there is a little less privacy in that room.

Overall, we had a great time and appreciated all that this home offered. Good value for the money, too!

Lovely Cottage in Wine Country

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this apartment in Burgundy. The location was tucked away, yet very close to the charming town of Nolay. Having the bikes was a real plus, as we could ride almost anywhere we wanted on the charming bike bath and rolling country roads. A few of them were not functioning when we got there, but after a quick call to the caretakers of the property (a sweet couple who live down the street), the bike was fixed and returned to us.

The house was very clean, except for a few dishes which we were able to throw into the dishwasher prior to use. The yard is wonderful to sit out in. We did not use the pool or the sauna, but they looked clean and wonderful. Make sure you visit Christophe and Fredrique at Domaine Minnot Roche next door for a tasting of their fabulous wines. The visit to their cellar was the highlight of our trip!

First time in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

First stay in Burgundy, only 6 hours away from home and I didn't know the area is so nice for hiking, bicycle tours, visits of the nice little towns and taste/buy the wine at the local vinyards. This holiday house made the nice holiday complete. Lovely house (in a little friendly village) with all the comfort and decorated in the style of the former winery. The swimming pool was an advantage to refresh after a warm day. There is plenty of space to sit outside in the sun or in the shadow as you want yourself. Kithchen is well-equipment with bbq outside for long nice evenings. We will come back !

Change is a charming little village, home to 8 winemakers! In the heart of Hautes Côtes de Beaune (one of the climats of burgundy which are in the Unesco World Heritage list), 20km south west of Beaune (Wine capital of Burgundy), 28km North west of Chalon (large town on the River Saone) and 25 km east of Autun (roman town and gateway to the Morvan Natural parc), Change is perfectly situated for exploring the best that Burgundy has to offer. The Canal du centre is just a few minutes away, where you can walk, cycle and horse ride along the bridle paths. Hikers can start in Change, either from the ‘Circuit de Trois Monts’ or the famous GR7. From the top of Mont des Trois Croix you will find a fantastic view. The 4(!) mountain bikes at the house will help you to experience the surrounding natural beauty that Change has to offer. For those who like a little bit of ‘Las Vegas’, Santenay with its castles and famous casino is just 5 km away.
