An off the grid oasis
Property was very accurate in description. Hosts were great! Available if needed. Made suggestions for restaurants as there are very few in this area. The privacy and tranquility surpassed what we thought. Our phones got no reception and it was a great respite from everyday life with electronics. There is a phone in the cottage should you need it. The only negative which would not apply to everyone would be the stairs leading to the sleeping quarters. They are steep and narrow and there is no bathroom or toliet on that floor. However, we chose to sleep downstairs on the queen size sofa sleeper which was surprisingly very comfortable for two adults.....so it all worked for us! We plan to return again - hopefully this Fall! We would highly recommend!

Weekend Getaway...
This was a beautiful quiet secluded property, great for a quiet weekend together and away from the rat race. Everything we needed was there, and we had a great relaxing weekend. The hosts were wonderful, and the place was very clean, organized and well equipped. My impression was that the hosts care and take great pride in this property.

Beautiful secluded cabin
We stayed here in the winter to be close to hiking trails in the Adirondacks. The owner Dan was very helpful and provided us with plenty of area trail maps. The cabin is extremely dog friendly and clean. We had everything we needed for our stay.

Lil slice of heaven and the hosts are angels
Perfection. Seriously. The cabin was so cozy and I felt completely at ease as soon as I stepped foot inside. It was very clean and it had every amenity we possibly could have needed (seriously... several points we thought "Dang, we should've bought x at the store" and every time it was in the house, like even dog nail clippers and a pizza slicer. The property was spectacular -- we got there at night when the lake was still liquid, and then the next morning we were greeted with light snowfall and it was beginning to freeze over. Super cool! We could see the beaver tracks going across the pond (at least I assume it was the beaver family that the guestbook talks about going back generations... wonder if it's the same family?). There was plenty of firewood, and puzzles and movies if we got bored, but my partner and I ended up not even utilizing either and instead just talked and listened to the surrounding acres of woodland at the amazing firepit. Incredible experience. Best vacation of my life up until this point. Seriously. And Carol is the sweetest human being ever, as all the other reviews mention. Just perfection. BOOK (but not in November of any year bc that's when we'll be back again ;) ).

About the host

Hosted by Carol or Dan Empie #315 376 4433

Host profile image
We live 2 miles up from the cottage on Number Four Rd and have been at that residence for 30 years. Dan is a forester and went to ESF at Syracuse University. He also has his realtor license and works for Timberland Realty. The focus is on listing wooded parcels and some have camps, houses or other structures. To inquire about his listings you can email him at dempie@timberlandrealty.net. Dan,also, does private consulting for forestry & land management.
Carol has been an RN for over 30 years which has led to a very varied set of work skills. She also had a wellness & fitness center in Lowville for 11 years. Currently she is focusing on the cottage, looking into other business ventures and works at a medium security prison as an RN.

Why they chose this property

We took care of the property for the 'long distant' owner for years before it became available for sale almost to the day of Carol closing her fitness center. There was a 'land developer' that was interested in the property also. Dr Fritelli was the current owner & had purchased the cottage and pond from Minnie Peck previously, who raised 5 children there. Dr Fritelli loved the property & entrusted much of the care, maintenance and management to Carol & Dan. He had it for his own private use. The developer (whom shall remain nameless) offered Dr Fritelli a fair market price for the cottage & land. Since the Empies had 'first refusal' we were able to match his offer to Dr Fritelli. Of course, the developer came back with a much more substantial offer. We could not match that. Dr Fritelli decided to sell the property to us at the first price and refused the developers. As stated earlier, he loved the property & knew we would take good care of it & share it with others without exploiting it. So, love of the land won against development and 'greener (money) pastures. Way to go Dr Fritelli...if only Ethan Allen & other business used you as an example!
We fixed up the cottage to share with others and, also, so we could afford it. We keep the rent very reasonable because we believe everyone should be able to enjoy the serenity of nature.
It was a lot of work but we enjoy work (crazy, huh!). Dr Fritelli would be proud. In our guest book he has a portion dedicated to his saying 'good bye' to his much loved land.
Our belief is to keep it affordable and always give more than what is expected.
