Newly Restored Apartment With A Wonderful Terrace

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Dec-2016
Offers Captivating and Highly Individual Roof-space Surroundings for Up to Four

A marvelous newly restored ‘mansarda’ apartment with a wonderful ‘altana’ rooftop terrace offering exceptional views in the heart of Castello.

Moments on foot to the landmark leaning bell-tower of San Giorgio Dei Greci and to the 'Questura' office of Donna Leon's fictional crime-busting Commissario Guido Brunetti on the ‘Rio di San Lorenzo’ canal, Ca’ Del Pittore offers captivating and highly individual roof-space surroundings for up to four guests on the very top floor.

Within easy walking distance of all the must-see sights of St. Mark’s Square (including the Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the Clock Tower) yet away from the hustle and bustle, the apartment features a large main living space made cosy and characterful thanks to the preservation of its magnificently rustic roof and wall timbers, wooden plank flooring, attractive ‘sunken’ seating area and eclectic choice of furnishings.

This main room leads via an arched glazed doorway surrounded by pretty conservatory-style trompe de l’oeil decoration, to a bright and fully-equipped west-facing kitchen enjoying fabulous views from its two rear windows.

There are two double bedrooms, one on either side of the apartment - a light and airy double with splendid beams, built in wardrobes and a double bed, and a similarly beamed twin with two singles - a handy walk-in closet plus two stylish bathrooms - one with a small bath and chequer board flooring and another with w.c. and wash hand basin.

Air-conditioning, a washing machine and internet connection further transform Ca Del Pittore into a comfy, practical and convenient choice whatever the season or duration of your stay, while a short staircase from the living area rises to the furnished ‘altana’ terrace boasting breathtaking ‘never to be forgotten’ vistas over Venice, taking in the churches of San Francesco Della Vigna and San Giorgio Maggiore in the distance and the onion domes and bell-tower of St. Marks soaring above a superabundance of terracotta rooftops.

OUR COMMENT

An impressive conversion in a fabulous spot, recently completed by its Venice-loving owners.

A short walk to the atmospheric Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni and its wonderful Carpaccio paintings, the monumental Dominican Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo (one of the largest churches in Venice and burial place of no fewer than 25 Venetian Doges), and to Campo Santa Maria Formosa (site of the Querini Stampalia) passing Palazzo Grimani on the way.

And even closer to home - moments to the imposing façade of the cavernous Church of San Lorenzo (now closed to the public, the church was the supposed resting place of famous Venetian explorer Marco Polo (1255-1324) before his body was lost during its rebuilding) and to the Museo di Dipinti Sacri Byzanti (Museum of Icons) just along the canal.

Also within easy reach of the local Punto supermarket for easy self-catering and to the vaporetto (water bus) stop at San Zaccaria on the Riva Degli Schiavoni waterfront.

Upon arriving in Venezia, we were a little disappointed that the vaporetto (number 5.1) that VOV told us to take to the apartment went around the back of the island (via Canale Scomenzera) and did not transverse the Grand Canal as we were looking forward to enjoying the ride through the city as is customary when one arrives in Venice; I'd recommend taking the number 1 or 2 vaporetti instead which takes longer but is much more enjoyable. Once we arrived at the San Zaccaria stop, the VOV rep, Cristina, promptly met us and led us on the 5 min walk to the apartment in the less touristy Castello area. Once in the building and through the somewhat dreary entrance area, the apartment is on the top floor with no lift. This was not a problem for us but could be an issue for elderly or those with heavy luggage. What a wonderful space here, very interesting floor plan with lots of character! Bedrooms and kitchen are brightly lit with natural light from the windows. All very clean with a surprisingly large master bedroom. All beds and bedding were very comfortable; my daughter even said the pull out single bed she slept on in the living area was great. There's also a great roof deck with excellent views over the city. The apt has a wonderful well-equipped kitchen with a large table that served as a gathering point for my family of 5 (more so than the living area). The clothes washer worked well and came in handy after 5 days in the Cinque Terre. Also, it was hot our first day in Venice and the A/C worked great throughout the entire apartment. The apt is close to San Marco (5 min walk) but far enough away from the maddening crowds of cruise ship tourists; A brisk walk took me across the Academia bridge to the Dosudoro within 20 mins. Very good local restaurants nearby and a good supermarket with everything you need for a full meal or just a snack (fresh produce, bread, cured meats, cheeses, beer/wine, etc). We experienced some minor plumbing issues (downstairs shower drain was slow, kitchen faucet loose) but, overall, I highly recommend this apartment for families or a group of friends for a wonderful stay in Venice. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Well positioned two bed apartment

  • 4 of 5

We found the apartment along a quiet path, just off a busy area, full of restaurants, shops and bars. The apartment has a huge communal living area, a respite away from the sweltering heat of Venice in August. Of the two double rooms, one far bigger and more welcoming than the other, and a fresh lick of paint would make the second room less of short-straw option. It could also do with a mirror a wardrobe to make it feel less boarding school. The smaller bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, with a bath, sink and loo. The larger room has use of a shower room down a flight of stairs, which is clean and functional. A seperate loo is situated off the living area. The kitchen was large and pretty well stocked. There is no air conditioning in there, so not particularly the best place to eat. The roof terrace is what makes the apartment. We spent much of the evenings up there, playing cards, watching the sunset with a drink, and eating our evening meals al fresco. An umbrella would have been helpful, since during the day, there was no respite from the sun, and since the table is metal, it felt pretty hot! Overall, we loved the apartment, and would re-book in a heartbeat, if the second bedroom was given some tlc, and an umbrella was provided for the roof terrace. (We were informed that health and safety was the reason for this) It is worth bearing in mind, that whilst the apartment is advertised as sleeping up to 6, it is only really a 4 person apartment, as the sofa beds are in the communal living area, which lies between the two bedrooms, and has no privacy whatsoever!

Beautiful apartment in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Loved everything about this place - character filled apartment with every facility you could want including an amazing roof terrace. There are a lot of stairs and within the apartment so although we were fine with a 4 year old, any younger might be a struggle. The location was absolutely perfect - no more than 10 minutes easy walk to San Marco along gorgeous canals. Restaurants and bars are plentiful, together with some amazing shops. The staff at Views on Venice were also fantastic - they advised on the best way from the airport, met us at the boat stop, booked a taxi, and responded promptly on a Saturday morning when we were missing some bedding. Can't recommend highly enough.

Amazing Apartment!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved staying here. Great location, close to many places such as St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's palace, a few minutes walk to the vaporetto, and bonus of a local magic shop that the kids went to daily. Francesca and the team were incredibly helpful both before when organising the apartment and when we met her, and she arranged a water taxi to the airport. So fun to have a boat come to your front door! The apartment had good air conditioning, remarkable views from the upstairs patio and almost every room, a lovely fully stocked kitchen, and the two bedrooms had comfortable beds. The architecture in the apartment was intriguing and eye pleasing. Obviously it is on the top floor, and there is no elevator - not suitable for people with mobility issues. For everyone else - free gym exercise! Oh - and the WIFI was unlimited and fast.

Great place to come back to after a day tromping around Venice - honestly it was hard to get the hubbie and kids to leave the apartment at times! Would highly recommend to everyone.

Wonderful stay in stunning appartment!

  • 5 of 5

It all started with the confirmation of the booking; helpful information and quick responses on several questions we had up front: so we were already relaxed even before we left for Venice.

Like agreed Cristina of Views On Venice was waiting for us at the boat stop and within 5 minutes we arrived at the apartment. The entrance of the building isn’t that inviting but once inside it is a real hidden treasure. Good beds, super kitchen, clean bathrooms and everything well equipped. The view from the terrace is like the photo’s: impressing! You won’t feel more like a Venetian. Besides that the apartment is very well located in Castello: very close to everything you want to see but not as touristic and crowded.

We loved our stay: some tips: Osteria do Gobbi is the place to have a very nice diner and after that please go to the little Bar on the corner, we think it’s called Bacaro Risorto, for a last Grappa late in the evening. Both are within 200 metres of the apartment, you can’t miss them.

Next time we will definitely book again at Views On Venice: Biennale 2017, here we come!

À Venise, autrement!

  • 5 of 5
