Guestbook comments from the manager

Villa Almendra was everything we that expected it to be. It was a very comfortable and clean home-from-home with the addition of the wonderful views. The pool was brilliant and well maintained. All 6 of us had an excellent time visiting local sights, restaurants and shops. In particular we enjoyed eating at Bar Cerezo and The Plaza in the centre of Canillas de Albaida. Lunch in Competa square is also a lovely experience. We went on some interesting walks, using the information in the 'House Book'. The goat-track to Competa was very useful. The villa is very secure and private with ample parking for 2 cars. The journey down (and back up again) when visiting the coast can feel a little long and winding but it has to be done to appreciate the wonderful views when up at the villa. Booking the villa was easy and the owners were helpful without being pushy. We have finally found somewhere that we would like to revisit. The only down-side was not realising that we needed to take our own beach/pool towels (it is not clear from the web site) and the washing machine was broken. We didn't let this spoil our enjoyment. Thank you to Brenda for her help. Margaret & Alan

Superb

We had 2 weeks here in Sept 2016. The property itself is very well maintained and in a beautiful, setting. The villages of Competa and Canilares are close by. Canilares is a 10 minute walk and has everything you need. The pool was excellent and totally private. The lady who looks after the property, Loli, made sure we had everything we needed and she did a great job. As a note to the owner, as there were only 2 of us we had ebough crockery, but I think you need to get some more for larger parties. Thank you for a fabulous holiday.

Very dissapointed

  • 1 of 5

We as a family of 5 ,including a 13yr girl, arrived on the 27th July late eve, meet by loli, who showed us around the villa, which was very clean and we'll presented,we were informed that there was a problem with the pool, the pool man came each day,but we could not use the pool till Saturday.?? This maybe should of been sorted before we arrived, all was fine at the villa until early morning of the 2nd of August, when I woke to see a tall we'll built figure of a man walking out of our main bedroom, being very startled by this,I sat on the bed watching for more movement, when the lamp was switched off ,and a head looked round the door, with this I switched the light on ,and we heard a door being locked,my husband and I went to investigate, to find all doors locked,???? My handbag had been moved from besides my bed and left in the lounge area, meaning this person had walked past my granddaughter room, and past myself to pickup my handbag, all cash was missing ,but not my travel money card,we were all very distressed by this, and what could of happen if I hadn't woke up and distrubed the intruder,we contacted Sam in England, and loli,we were told this was impossible to happen as the locks had been changed before our stay, because of problems, also loli told us it had never happen before,????? By the afternoon of the 2nd of August (my 60th birthday ) loli arrived and said she had retrieved the money from who she suspected,?? ,our holiday was totally ruined and we never left the villa again till we took our flight home,we asked for the police to finger print my handbag, purse,&lamp, but loli assured us that she had spoken to the police, such a shame as it's a lovely villa ,in a lovely area, after reading the recent review from Emma in Birmingham, encountering this experience in June,2017, there seems to be a security issue at the villa, and had we been informed we would of cancelled our booking.

Our holiday nightmare!

  • 1 of 5

On day four we got robbed! We believe someone used keys to enter the villa at night. We woke in a gut instinct terror early in the morning to the sound of the heavy metal front door banging closed. My husband checked all doors and windows and they were all locked up and couldn't see prowlers so we went back to sleep. Later that day after walking out locally for lunch we found all money had been taken from purse that had been left in lounge and we know it definitely had a few hundred euros in it when we went to bed. Police visited and were great but we didn't sleep very well after that even though Sam got two out of three locks changed within 24 hours.

On top of that we arrived to a thick green pool. Didn't worry about it for a couple of days as pool man comes every week the info says and management who showed us round must have seen it, so must be nothing to worry about. We only complained after feeling we didn't want to use it for the first three days and after looking at the blue pool pictures on the website. Then we had to endure the pool man EVERY DAY for the rest of our holiday, not what a relaxing villa holiday should involve. Very frustrating. Plus he just walked in unannounced making us jump evertime following our robbery experience, let alone privacy issues.

If we hadn't had these issues our review would have been something like.....villa with gorgeous view short walk from small white village with 2 or 3 good restaurants. Good master double bed mattress and linen but no bath mats and second set of towels and sheets would have been appreciated as we were a two week let. No welcome pack, not even a bottle of water. Although there was ample washing up liquid and some salt but the villa was strangely stripped bare and devoid of any of the things that usually make a villa special - oil, vinegar, herbs and spices that inevitably all guests leave. There was a pair of binoculars but literally only one book no games or pool equipment and no DVD connected (but there was a dusty one in a cupboard that might have worked), but there was good wifi, satellite TV with UK channels and a connection for our fire stick so we could get Netflix. We rented a Fiat Panda but would really order a bigger engine car to cope with the steep hills in the area.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you have had such a bad experience in my villa and I am extremely upset at reading such a damming review which I don't deserve. In response to the points that you make I would like to point out the following, First of all it is not our policy to provide our guests with a welcome pack. The villa is very reasonably priced i.e 50 euros per night per person and 10 euros for additional people of more than two. For other villas of the same standard you would be paying much higher fees. The reason for the swimming pool being discoloured is due to a number of factors, firstly the extremely high temperatures that Spain and Europe are experiencing this year, secondly despite requesting guests to shower before using the pool i.e to wash off sun lotion the majority don't do this causing the water to become green. In order to remedy this the maintenance man had to make frequent visits early in the morning so as not to disturb you and for you to be able to use the pool safely. Unfortunately I cannot control the weather and the temperatures!!! The incident concerning the theft- as soon as I heard about it I contacted the manager to arrange a locksmith to change two sets of locks as the kitchen door lock was brand new. What else could I have done to rectify the situation from the UK ?. The matter is now in the hands of police and the local Mayor and I shall be following up, having arranged a special trip to see them in the next few days. It really surprises me that the feedback that I had about your arrival at the villa which was so enthusiastic and positive( according to the manager) that you could write such a nasty negative review. Frankly I don't deserve this as my one aim is to ensure the safety and enjoyment of my guests, as you can see from previous reviews. It is quite clear that you have absolutely no moral conscience in trying to ruin my future bookings and to discourage others from coming to what is a beautiful area and a beautiful villa.

lovely spot between Competa and Canillas de Albeida

  • 4 of 5

Lovely views and quiet location. The pool was only for the brave in April but some of our number used it daily. Breakfast on the terrace was a daily ritual. The log-burning stove with an ample wood supply was excellent for the sometimes chilly evenings. Fine walking in the vicinity. Glorious spring flowers everywhere.

Peace perfect peace

If your looking to get away from it all this is the place. Great views of the countryside all the way to the sea. The walk into Competa is great but for the daytime only but you can get a Taxi back in the dark.

The villa itself was very clean and

Plenty of good food shops in Competa along with places to eat and drink. Sam, the owner was on hand, if required, to give help and advice. All and all a great few days and will probably return.
