About this property

The Sculptors' House In the Historic Centre Of Uzès

The 'Sculptor's House is in the 'Bourgades', district, a conservation area just off the circular boulevard. The Place aux Herbes with its lively markets is only a couple of minutes away, as is Boulevard Gambetta, its shops, restaurants and banks. At the same time the street is quiet compared with the boulevards or the market square. If you feel too tired to cook, one of the best restaurants in town is 20m up the road! The pedestrian street, mostly residential, is cobbled, but is easily accessed by car to load and unload luggage or shopping.
This town house, which dates back to the 18th century or perhaps earlier, was renovated and extended by a sculptor in the early nineties, then bought by another (the present owner's wife), in 2002. It retains its character as a family home, friendly and well equipped. If you are looking for somewhere completely made over and aseptic, it is perhaps not for you! There are original oil paintings, sculptures and other works of art throughout. Also plenty of books, records and board games.
The ground floor is a garage and storage area with its own street door and is not included in the rental. The front door opens onto a flight of stairs leading a to bedroom on the left. Straight ahead is the main living area with kitchen and dining room with a ceiling of exposed beams. At the far end there is a window the width of the house which slides open and almost turns the living room into a verandah. A glass door leads onto the terrace with marble bistrot tables and a parasol. From the living area an open plan hand crafted wooden staircase leads to the upper floor. There is a large bedroom with double bed, and a smaller one with two single beds, one of which is on stilts. They share a separate toilet and a bathroom equipped with two handbasins. The downstairs bedroom has its own bathroom and access to the toilet next door, which means that no one needs to wake anyone in the night! The entire house is very practically designed and heated or cooled by reversible air conditioning, a great asset in July and August when temperatures can be in the mid 30s C°. Free street parking can usually be had at the bottom of the road, or for greater security there is an underground car park just over five minutes walk away! You can arrive on any day of the week that suits you.

Rustic and homely charm Well placed and great home from home
Loved staying at this lovely house, so local for amenities and local attractions. Parking nearby was easy and free. Outside terrace was great & Olivier was fantastic at sorting a cot out for our baby. Only negative was that the bed upstairs was uncomfortable and the whole place could be modernised - however this could take away the charm of the place? Piano in the lounge area was superb and lovely to have. Communication with Oliver was great and reliable. Overall it’s been a fantastic week staying at Oliver’s house and couldn’t have asked for a better place. Thank you :)

A lovely sojourn in Uzes
Oliver's house is a lovely, interesting and conveniently located house to stay. It felt like a family home and was very suitable for our longer stay. Oliver was very welcoming and responsive, but had a good sense of when to 'out of the way'.

Back to a second home!
We stayed in this lovely house in 2013 and have since stayed in several of Oliver Bevans holiday rentals. Although the others are great the Sculptors House is really special. There is nothing you need that's not supplied. The Air Conditioning is first class and in the hot weather we had it was very very welcome. The house is across the road from Place aux Herbes and so it is a very central position. Most of all the host is extremely contactable and helpful with any and all queries. Very much recommended, we will definitely be back.

Thoroughly recommended
A spacious and well-equipped house which, with its beautiful artwork and large book collection, felt more like a real home than a holiday rental. Very convenient location right next to the historic centre, shops and bus services (and the Saturday and Wednesday markets - not to be missed) and within easy walking distance of country walks in the woods and by the river. Uzes is a lovely town and one week was not long enough. We hope to return and would certainly book one of Oliver's properties again next time - he was an excellent host.

Peace and tranquility in Uzes
We stayed two weeks in the Sculptor's House in Uzes in August along with our 3 year old grand-daughter. It was everything promised by the web-site's description and photographs. It is superbly positioned in Uzes, very comfortable, clean, well provided with utensils and equipment and delightfully decorated with lovely art and sculptures. The wonderful collection of books in English and French was impressive and enjoyed by my wife, myself and the children's section loved by our grand-daughter. Uzes is a beautiful small town with lots of good places to drink or eat, even with a three year old. There is lots to do in the surrounding countryside. Our only shock, especially as we live in Australia, was the local swimming pool in Uzes. Board shorts and tee shirts are not allowed to be worn in the pool and there is no shade provided in the pool area. A melanoma's delight as the temperature was in the mid-thirtys with a blue sky and a blazing sun. Oliver was a charming and helpful host and we would strongly recommend his delightful house.

My wife, the painter and sculptor Pat Thornton (1946 - 2009), bought this town house after moving from London, England. We both pursued our lives as working artists, exhibiting in the South of France and in the UK. I still continue and have a small permanent gallery in Uzes. To see what I do, you will find me easily via search engines.

Why they chose this property

We wanted at least one really big space, somewhere to eat out of doors, a property with character, and the charm of old architecture combined with modern comforts. After many frustrating months of search, this was clearly the one which matched our needs.

What makes this property unique

What grabbed us above all was the wall of sliding windows which link inside and outside. We liked the terrace being on the same level as the kitchen and dining area, and the big olive tree in the yard. As the generous kitchen space is part of the main living area, the cook is not cut off from guests and family. In addition thick walls provide sound insulation, and the house is calm. Its position in Uzès is very desirable; it is in a street of mostly 18th century stone houses, which has recently been restored and paved with cobbles. It now forms part of the historic conservation area and is just a few steps from the Place aux Herbes where the markets are held, with none of the inconvenience of noise which residents of the Place complain about. .
