The Sculptors' House In the Historic Centre Of Uzès

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
A Modernised Stone House With Air Conditioning On Two Floors With Terrace

The 'Sculptor's house was a new rental in 2014 in the 'Bourgades', a conservation area just off the circular boulevard. The Place aux Herbes with its lively markets is only a couple of minutes away, as is Boulevard Gambetta, its shops, restaurants and banks. At the same time the street is quiet compared with the Boulevards or the Place aux Herbes. If you feel too tired to cook, one of the best restaurants in town is 20m up the road! Or order a pizza or pasta dish from a new restaurant opposite. The pedestrian street, mostly residential, is cobbled, but is easily accessed by car to load and unload luggage or groceries.

This town house, which dates back to the 18th century or perhaps earlier, was renovated and extended by a sculptor in the early nineties, then bought by another (the present owner's wife), in 2002. It retains its character as a family home, friendly and well equipped. If you are looking for somewhere completely made over and aseptic, it is perhaps not for you! There are original oil paintings, sculptures and other works of art throughout.

The ground floor is a garage/storage area with its own street door and is excluded from the let. The front door opens onto a flight of stairs leading to bedroom 1 on the left which looks onto the street, then straight ahead past the downstairs toilet to the main living area which comprises kitchen and dining room with exposed beamed ceiling. At the far end there is a window the width of the house which slides open and almost turns the living room into a verandah. A glass door leads onto the terrace with marble bistrot tables and a parasol. Steps down give access to the shady courtyard below. From the living area an open plan hand crafted wooden staircase leads to the upper floor. There is a large bedroom with double bed, and a smaller one with two single beds, one of which is on stilts. They share a separate toilet and a bathroom equipped with two handbasins. The downstairs bedroom has its own bathroom and access to the toilet next door, which means that no one needs to wake anyone in the night! The entire house is very practically designed and heated or cooled by reversible air conditioning, a great asset in July and August when temperatures can be in the mid 30s C°. Free street parking can usually be had at the bottom of the road, or for greater security there is the underground car park just over five minutes walk away. A weekly pass can be purchased for about 45€.

BUT please try to avoid arriving on a Sunday!

About the Owner

My wife, the painter and sculptor Pat Thornton (1946 - 2009), bought this town house after moving from London, England. We both pursued our lives as working artists, exhibiting in the South of France and in the UK. I still continue and have a small permanent gallery in Uzes. To see what I do, you will find me easily via search engines.

Peace and tranquility in Uzes

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two weeks in the Sculptor's House in Uzes in August along with our 3 year old grand-daughter.

It was everything promised by the web-site's description and photographs.

It is superbly positioned in Uzes, very comfortable, clean, well provided with utensils and equipment and delightfully decorated with lovely art and sculptures. The wonderful collection of books in English and French was impressive and enjoyed by my wife, myself and the children's section loved by our grand-daughter.

Uzes is a beautiful small town with lots of good places to drink or eat, even with a three year old. There is lots to do in the surrounding countryside.

Our only shock, especially as we live in Australia, was the local swimming pool in Uzes. Board shorts and tee shirts are not allowed to be worn in the pool and there is no shade provided in the pool area. A melanoma's delight as the temperature was in the mid-thirtys with a blue sky and a blazing sun.

Oliver was a charming and helpful host and we would strongly recommend his delightful house.

Owner's Response: I am delighted these visitors liked the studio, and I thank them for their helpful comments. I will check and replace any equipment that needs it, but as no one else has complained about the knives I had no idea they were blunt! As for the beam upstairs - there is a step on each side to help cross it and I added two cement blocks so that an octogenarian visitor could readily access his bed. You do not in fact have to be agile!

Beautifull home in Uzes France

  • 5 of 5

our stay was early June 2014 loved this house, exactly as the photos showed it is very close to the centre of town with a lovely little bakery straight across the street. Got up of a morning put the coffee on and went over to the bakery for our croissant lovely way to start the day. Our host Oliver was very helpful with hints, directions and advice, we had lots of day trips plenty to see a car is a must having said that there is plenty to do in and around the town, beautiful home, beautiful town, beautiful country loved every minute.

Booking was easy no issues at all spoke to owner a couple of times before arriving I would definitely recommend The Sculptors House to anyone wanting to stay in Uzes

Perfectly situated home from home

  • 4 of 5

We really appreciated the opportunity to stay in an interesting, artistically presented townhouse which is less than 5 minutes' walk from the beautiful main square of Uzès. The house is very well equipped and homely, with an impressive book collection. It was good to be on a pedestrianised street (though this doesn't guarantee peace and quiet) and we were lucky to find free parking for our under-used hire car nearby. Everything you could want is within walking distance and the shopping is touristy but tasteful. There is a huge choice of restaurants and we found the owner's recommendations better than our own choices. The house's terrace has no outward view but is very pleasant for dining. It was an ideal base for us and we were totally charmed by Uzès.

Great holiday house and location in beautiful Uzes

  • 5 of 5

The house had everything we needed from the coffee machine to the guide books and from the comfy beds to the light terrace. Oliver was very helpful and the location was perfect, so close to everything Uzes can offer. The secure parking 10 min walk was good value at 50 euro for the week. The only problem I had (I'm a light sleeper) was being woken by rubbish collection early each morning and my husband struggled with the heat at night but these things did not affect our overall very positive impressions of the house and we would recommend anyone stay here - especially if they have an interest in art.

Location

From the Owner

We wanted at least one really big space, somewhere to eat out of doors, a property with character, and the charm of old architecture combined with modern comforts. After many frustrating months of search, this was clearly the one which matched our needs.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Nimes (Garons) at 35 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : at 60 Metres Nearest Ferry : Sete to Tangiers, Nador, Barcelona at 140 Kilometres Nearest Golf : at 1.8 Kilometres Nearest Train : Nimes or Avignon at 29 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A9 Remoulins at 19 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : La Parenthèse at 50 Metres Nearest Beach : La Grande Motte at 55 Kilometres Car: recommended

Uzès is known throughout France as one of the most beautiful small towns in the country. It's Medieval and Renaissance architecture are breathtaking. Add to this a sunny climate, wonderful local produce sold in its markets, great wines, and gastronomic restaurants and you have a perfect holiday destination. Venturing out by car or bus you can reach the best preserved Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard in 15 minutes, Nimes in half an hour, Avignon in 40 minutes, Arles in 50 minutes and Montpellier in just over an hour. Uzès has a public swimming pool, but you can also swim in the sea at resorts like La Grande Motte or Grau du Roi, but if you prefer wilder scenery L'Espiguette, a huge beach fringed by dunes and pine trees is just over an hour's drive. Alternatively there are spectacular spots for river bathing like Collias by the Gardon, or Roque sur Cèze below the waterfalls. Uzes is wonderfully placed for exploring the walled city of Aigues Mortes, its salt pans and the Camargue (bird watching), or for the granite mountains of the Cevennes made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson. Start at Anduze with its bamboo garden, La Bambouseraie. You can visit wineries around Chateauneuf du Pape and many other areas.(I recommend Pic Saint Loup) There are stunning caves like the Aven D'Orgnac, river gorges, the Gardon and the Ardèche where you can kayak. The landscape is magnificent and you can explore it on foot via its many signposted paths. There are palaces and gardens to visit, plus art galleries and museums of international quality in Nimes, Avignon and Montpellier. I chose to live here to enjoy all these beautiful things.

Facilities

From the Owner

What grabbed us above all was the wall of sliding windows which link inside and outside. We liked the terrace being on the same level as the kitchen and dining area, and the big olive tree in the yard. As the generous kitchen space is part of the main living area, the cook is not cut off from guests and family. In addition thick walls provide sound insulation, and the house is calm. Its position in Uzès is very desirable; it is in a street of mostly 18th century stone houses, which has recently been restored and paved with cobbles. It now forms part of the historic conservation area and is just a few steps from the Place aux Herbes where the markets are held, with none of the inconvenience of noise which residents of the Place complain about. .
