About this property

Riverbank House, a UK-owned 5 Bedroom 5 bathroom serviced villa for10 with pool.

Star features of your stay include our local manager Khyry (who will meet you at the airport and be available to act as your guide) and the delicious meals provided by our cook Mahmood and the services of our helpful housekeeper Sayeed (who do not live in the Villa, so that you have exclusive use of the whole property).

The Roof Terrace has unparalleled views of a wide sweep of the Nile and its constant river activity, whilst below you may still see local life with its donkey carts and camels little changed for centuries. Behind is an extensive view inland with the backcloth of the mountains containing the Valley of Kings and other nearby sites of ancient Thebes.

From the front garden gate on river bank, steps lead up to a wide veranda. As you enter there is a well equipped kitchen on the left and a comfortable seating area on the right. A spacious hallway leads to two bedrooms, one large double and one twin, each with en-suite bath/shower rooms. A side door lets out to the surrounding garden.

A marble staircase leads to the first floor with a magnificent twin-domed sitting room extending across the entire width of the villa, with large windows overlooking the Nile. At one end is a comfortable seating area, whilst at the other end there is a magnificent inlaid table, easily accommodating 10. On this floor there are two more bedrooms, one large double, one twin, both with en-suite facilities, and a view to the Nile. On the roof terrace is the fifth bedroom and separate shower-room, a small kitchen, and comfortable seating in sun or shade.

Under the large open dome you can have full Egyptian breakfasts and other delicious meals served to you. Breakfasts include coffee or tea, freshly squeezed seasonal fruit juices, omelettes and pancakes, yogurt, freshly prepared fruit salad, feta cheese, falafels and local bread. If you choose to have dinner prepared by our chef, you will have a wide choice of meat or vegetarian dishes cooked to your liking. All food is freshly prepared.

Prices are currently as follows:
Breakfasts GB£ 6 or US$7 or Euros 7
Dinners GB £12 or US$ 14 or Euros 14
Children under 12 half price.

Egyptian red and white wines can be ordered and gin and other spirits can be bought on the East bank. A general store next to the villa can supply tonic water, other soft drinks and snacks. Mineral water is plentiful and cheap.

Behind the Villa (separated by a narrow lane) is our large walled garden, with a 12m by 4m swimming pool, with jacuzzi, a partitioned shallow play area for small children. There are showers and changing facilities, with swimming towels provided, plus sun-beds and other seating.

Khyry, will be happy to advise and assist you, as required. He is a qualified Egyptian Guide and knows the area intimately. He can arrange transport in our 13 seater-minibus and/or 7-seater car, as well as river transport, including our own motor launch, Sirius. However, you will of course be completely free to choose how you want to spend your time.

In our view the information currently given by this agency "About the area" and Location (including the map provided) is very out-of-date and misleading. Also, we can take no responsibility for the restaurants recommended. We can provide an up-to-date map showing the proximity of the Villa to the places you will want to visit by road or river. transport. Following the construction of a new road bridge, the villa is now only 20 minutes from the airport. There is also a public ferry to the wonderful Luxor Museum.

A beautiful Egyptian style house on the Nile with a swimming pool and close to all Luxor sites
I am a seasoned traveller but Egypt had so far remained outside my radar so it was with great excitement I accepted an invitation to spend a week at Riverbank House in Luxor. It turned out to be a truly memorable trip in every way...The house is very beautiful with domed brick ceilings, gorgeous carved wooden doors, lovely floor tiles, spacious high ceilinged ensuite rooms with ceiling fans, latticed arched wooden windows in traditional Egyptian style, exquisite dining room furniture in wood and mother pearl , everything in the house has been designed with taste and refinement. The roof terrace where we had our breakfast in the sun every morning, has a wonderful view of the Nile and its feluccas, dahabyas, small colourful boats and huge steam ships ... The Valley of the Kings and the balloons that hang over it can be seen from the back windows. The Eastern bank with the Winter Palace , Luxor and Karnak temples is just a short and very pleasant boat ride away... And there is Khyry. Khyry , the Egyptian friend of Pamela and Christopher who with his good humour and intelligence will resolve any problems, organize your outings, camel rides, tomb visits - where he can be your knowledgeable guide - , take you to the nicest restaurants, protect you from persistent touts... he really is your key to Luxor! And opposite the house there is a beautiful , secluded swimming pool with a small garden , an oasis of calm and sunshine... I was forgetting to mention the food, the heavenly food cooked by Mahmoud... Guava or strawberry and banana juices, wonderful falafels, delicious tahina, fish from the Nile , stuffed pidgeons... Real feasts at breakfast and dinner! As I was invited by one of Pamela's sisters, I had the luck of meeting her and Christopher, two of the best hosts I have ever met as well as two of the nicest. To have built two houses as gorgeous as River Bank and Villa Rosamund from scratch is amazing, I really admire their passion for Egypt, for Luxor and for making the stay of whoever rents their beautiful houses a unique experience... one that I was lucky to have been able to enjoy and I would love to share some day with my family... maybe renting the house for a few days and then sailing down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan on their dahabiya, stopping at villages on the way , watching sunsets and full moons on the river... I truly can not think of many more enjoyable ways of spending a week in Egypt away from the crowds...This is the one!

Wonderful place to stay in Luxor!
This is a beautiful house in a wonderful location - you will enjoy sitting on the roof and listening to the sounds of the muezzin calling to prayer as the sun sets, and watching the life on the river. Khyry is a real 'fixer' and made all aspects of our stay very easy. He arranged for our trips to the tombs, organised a morning of camel riding, and even horse and carriage rides around Luxor. As much or as little as you want, he will facilitate and advise.

What a amazing experience!!
Our family of 5 have had a wonderful stay in this most gloriously designed and well facilitated property. Riverbank is a subtle icon in its own right, located right on the bank of the Nile (opposite King Farook's Winter Palace and the Ancient Luxor Temple itself). The views from the roof terrace and the first floor of the Nile are wonderful, we spent most mornings from 5am onwards watching the sun rise, the early fishermen in their little rowboats and the hot air balloons rising above this calm arterial river. Turn around to look to the rear of The Riverbank and you see the stunning views of the desert mountains, Valley of the Queens, the village, the banana plantations. So much greenery met by the dry desert mountains in the distance. Really Stunning! Everything was perfect during our 4 week stay, I realise that this is a 'statement' but Khyry who takes care of the guests was waiting at Luxor airport with an a/c vehicle and a meal waiting for us at the villa. Khyry understands hospitality, but he offers this naturally and genuinely. He is now a friend, whom I would l hope to keep in touch with. Highly recommended are the optional meals that were offered to us purely as an additional service for our convenience. Mehmood is an excellent chef with lots of experience and culinary ideas and Saeed his assistant was always on the ready to help, accommodating in every way. Overall a great trip in a great villa which is superbly placed to explore Luxor and enjoy its greatest asset the Nile. Oh and I can't forget the new swimming pool in its own grounds and facilities also the local stables for very affordable horse riding. The Dahabiyah cruise, which is also available is out of this world, tranquil, mystical sailing from Luxor to Aswan with historic temple and site stops at Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Silsila Island ending in Aswan. I could go on.... :-) Thank you Christopher, Pamela, Khyry and his team.

A memorable and outstanding holiday
Forget cruising on the Nile - if you really want to see Egypt in all its many facets, stay at Riverbank House. It's a most beautiful home, light and airy, with a simplicity and faithfulness to its Egyptian design and detail, with fantastic views across the Nile to the Temple at Luxor and the Winter Palace to the front, and the mountain at the back. It is so peaceful, and with Mahdi and Sayid preparing wonderful meals, and Khyry organising all our excursions, wherever we wanted to go, nothing could be more relaxing. Partly because he accompanied us, and also because the local people are so warm and welcoming, we felt entirely safe. We adored the trip up the Nile in the dahabiya, and the richness of the bird life in the shallow waters of the banks is a joy for anyone interested in ornithology. Visiting the temple at Esna was a bonus - it was fascinating to see how the Greeks and Romans adapted their own religion to incorporate Egyptian gods and goddesses. More locally, there is plenty to do. We enjoyed swimming in the hotel outdoor pool, set in pleasant gardens, just a short walk away, and it was interesting walking through the village and along the paths by the banks of the Nile, seeing how the local people make use of the fertile soil to grow crops and feed cattle, a little glimpse into true Egyptian life. Of course, if you want to visit Egyptian tombs and the Valley of the Kings, these are right on your doorstep. Altogether, I cannot think of a more lovely place to stay, looked after by such attentive people, and with such varied and interesting things to do and see: a perfect and memorable holiday.

About the host

Hosted by Khyry with Christopher and Pamela

Host profile image
It was in December 2003 that we had a chance meeting with Khyry on the corniche by the Nile. He had just returned from military service in the north of Egypt to his West Bank village, where his family have a sugar plantation and a small farm. Within a short time a bond of friendship and trust was formed between us and when an opportunity arose, we were able to purchase some land in a wonderful position by the Nile.
This was the foundation of a collaboration to build our two beautiful large villas, employing only local labour and craftsmanship. We had together studied some of the designs of Hassan Fahty, the Egyptian architect famed for his domed buildings and we were able to engage the son of one of his team, who had learned the craft from his father. We also visited a number of older local buildings for inspiration on internal floor patterns and other features. Most of the brickwork, all the ornamental ironwork and the woodwork, including doors and furniture were made locally.
Khyry has a wealth of local knowledge and contacts, and this joint enterprise could never have been achieved without him. The association between us has extended to members of our families and this has been an interesting and very rewarding meeting of cultures. Together, we now have a team which excels in providing an individualised and memorable holiday experience.

Delicious and healthy breakfasts and other meals can be provided by our acclaimed cook Mahmood and served to you by Sayeed either on the long table on the first floor or under the open dome on the roof terrace.

Why they chose this property

Riverbank House, completed in 2013, is a beautiful and distinctive property, situated on a quiet stretch of the West Bank, directly opposite the Old Winter Palace hotel. The villa has unparalleled views of the Nile, both from its large roof terrace and from the magnificent long room overlooking the river on its first floor. The Nile can also be glimpsed from the bedrooms.

In addition to the small gated garden surrounding the villa and the large walled garden, there is our privately owned land leading right to the water's edge.

What makes this property unique

Khyry will be there to meet you at the airport and he and his team will ensure that you are looked after throughout your stay. They will offer you a full Egyptian breakfast your first morning, during which you can discuss how you might want to spend your time. The choices are wide: there is so much to see in this unique World Heritage Site, said to be the greatest open-air museum in the World.

As well as the Valleys of the Kings, Queens and Nobles, (all easily reached by road from your villa) our motor launch can take you to the East Bank to the stupendous temple at Karnak, with an English, French or German speaking guide if you wish, perhaps stopping off on the way back at the exquisite Luxor Museum or Luxor Temple.

You will also have opportunities to visit local villages (by donkey, camel, car or on foot) and see something of life unchanged for centuries and to experience sunsets from the desert or from a felucca on the Nile; visit the house of Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutenkamun, as well as other monuments off the beaten track, where discoveries are still being made today. You can also be taken to the edge of the desert
A balloon ride staring in the early morning will provide an unforgettable experience and wonderful photo opportunities.

After an active day you will be ready to enjoy a meal freshly prepared by our wonderful chef. Some nights you may like to visit some some very special restaurants (though most of the ones along the river front would not be recommended.)

You may, of course, just want to relax in the sunshine and gaze at the views from the roof terrace, and perhaps end the day with a barbecue under the stars.

Longer excursions in our minibus can be arranged at short notice. You can even hire a luxurious two-masted Dahabya, Queen Tiye, for an overnight stay at its mooring on the West Bank or a five-day sail along the Nile.

Whatever you decide, we promise you an unforgettable time free from the constraints of a package tour.
