Hatchwell House is set in a beautiful rural location near Widecombe-in-the-Moor, probably the most famous village in the National Park.

The park itself covers 368 sq miles of wild rugged landscape, characterized by towering granite tors, paths and tracks winding through the heather and the stunning River Dart that gave the moor its name. It is therefore a favourite place of walkers, cyclists and riders, with access to The Two Moors Way and the Templar Way, as well as many other marked routes to suit all users.

The tors provide 'letter boxing' and geocaching, or simply just a wonderful vantage point to enjoy views all the way to the sea.

For the adventurous there is rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing, also angling. Plenty of information is available about how to access all activities, the main Visitor Centres being Princetown, Postbridge and Haytor.

The area is steeped in history, folklore and legend abound, revolving around the tin-mines, the remnants of bronze-age villages, the famous granite long houses and the infamous Dartmoor Prison. Small wonder the Moor has inspired so many of our best known authors and produced such great works of literature.

Wildlife and animal lovers can enjoy the sight of sheep, cattle and Dartmoor ponies roaming free, and take advantage of the work of the many artists and photographers who exhibit in the local area.

There are many great places to eat and drink, from cosy, welcoming pubs with pretty gardens to tea rooms and village cafés. Widecombe itself is well served by two excellent pubs, charming cafés and a local shop, as well as the 16th century church whose imposing architecture can be seen from miles around and has given it the title 'cathedral of the moor'. On the second Tuesday of September every year the village opens its arms to visitors from all over the world who come to experience the famous Widecombe Fair, where rural crafts, livestock, local food, drink and music are all on display as well as Uncle Tom Cobley and his legendary grey mare.

The unique atmosphere of the Moor with its ever-changing moods cannot fail to enchant, but should the visitor wish a different experience, the rest of glorious Devon is on offer, the only county in Britain with two contrasting coasts, the south tranquil and calm, the north wild and untamed, home of excellent surfing.

Devon has everything to offer, from peaceful thatched cottage villages to vibrant towns with night-life and fine dining, Dartmoor standing out as the ancient shining jewel in its crown.

Quirky gem on the moor

  • 4 of 5

A rambling old lady but with lots to offer to the imagination. We will fondly remember our break on the moor, the wild life positively enchanting and breathtaking views. Not for those expecting mod cons or a walk to the 'local' this is more for the complete 'getting away from it' senerio and the aga proved to be a challenge which we succeeded in cracking. This old lady was a tad chilly at times but wood was on hand for the log burners and Rose the manager is only a phone call away if needed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for appreciating the splendor of the Grade 2 14th century Hall house cum Devon Long house, ful of characterful quirky delights one would expect in an old lady of her age...s I am sorry you found it chilly as the newly installed central heating is on 18 degrees as standard in the summer, the Aga pumps out heat too, ( I hope you found the Aga instructions provided!?) and we have provided additional heaters log fires , hot water bottles an electric blankets throughout for those that feel the chill, which I do. We are always happy to turn the heat up instantly if requested, never a problem. ( We had some Australians staying who were not happy until the heating was at 30 degrees...in the summer!) However I must object to "mod cons" comment as a tad inaccurate, as the ONLY place in all Dartmoor that gets a phone signal, we boast high-speed broadband, ipod docking station, 5 televisions/ 2 DVD washing machine/ dryer, dishwasher etc etc..which is why we are five star.. Maybe a "mod con" is a pub you can walk to ..there are a delightful selection of pubs ( cafes, shops, postoffice, etc) in Widecombe are only a 1/2 mile walk over the hill. Indeed, most people dont want to leave because of the Halls ambiance...but then I am biased!

A beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Charming and atmospheric.

  • 4 of 5

Fitted two families well with plenty of space for 4 young children to play and an amazing garden. Plenty of bathrooms and the furniture is quality rather than 'rental'.

Excellent location for a rural getaway with stunning moor walks on the doorstep.

Only criticism would be that some of the appliances need upgrading - the fridges are small and beginning. To hang on their hinges.

Learning to cook on an Aga was interesting though the roast chicken was accepted as one of he best ever.

Would recommend to anyone.

What a wonderful place for a family party!

  • 5 of 5

With very clear instructions and direction we found Hatchwell Hall easily and our initial impressions were very positive, bathed in evening sunshine it was delightful. As the rest of the family arrived we explored all the facilities and could not fault it. Everything seemed to have been thought of and our four night stay was excellent. We have nice weather for most of the visit and we're able to enjoy Widecombe, the moors and Tors and visit all my childhood haunts around Meavy, Sheepstor and up the Plym valley as well as explore Hayworth, Hound Tor and Grimspound. Everything went well and my children and grandchildren now understand my enthusiasm for Dartmoor and rambling reminiscences of childhood

Lovely secluded cottage

  • 5 of 5

Really nice dwelling. There were 4 adults and 2 children in our party

Very spacious and everything had been thought of.

Would not hesitate to use again. If there's only two of you take a look at The Lodge next door

Lovely holiday

A lovely and characterful place to stay - recommended.

  • 5 of 5

We had a very cold weekend, (with snow!) nonetheless the house was cozy particularly with the woodburners on. Everything is very uneven and with low beams, wonky stairs and one exceptionally low doorway - delightful for our group but the more decrepit might find the upstairs rooms rather hard work, particularly with the very high four-posters, though the downstairs bedroom is perfect. There is a definite skill in aga cooking, and the uninitiated - like us - need to remember the problems of meals that require a hot oven and using the hotplates at the same time! But wonderful to have so many ovens to keep stuff warm in. We had a lovely snowy walk along the top and then down through grimspound and abandoned tin mines to Warren House Inn - not the most glamorous of pubs but friendly and with very adequate and speedy pub food. Would definitely consider coming again.

Hatchwell Hall

  • 5 of 5

Delightful property which lived up to the description on the website. Well appointed and equipped as well as being clean and well maintained. There were a few minor initial difficulties with the heating and the AGA but once these were sorted out everything was fine. Thank you for the thoughtful welcoming gifts they were much appreciated. The location on Dartmoor was perfect. We would not hesitate to recommend the property to friends and relatives.
