About this property

Private Oceanside Beach Retreat - Unplug and Relax

Unplug and relax in our open air palapa with an uninterrupted view of the wide open ocean and lush green coastline.

This is the ultimate off the grid getaway, with just enough conveniences (fridge, hot running water, solar power) to make you feel comfortable and right at home.

We are located an hour south of Puerto Vallarta in the Los Chonchos eco development which is a group of about 20 palapas spread out among the jungle hillsides and two sand beaches. A full time staff (English speaking) is onsite to welcome you when you arrive and help with anything that you need.

Los Chonchos has no roads and is best reached via water taxi which leaves twice a day from Boca de Tomatlan located 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. The 40 minute boat ride is a highlight of the trip as you cruise down the breathtaking Pacific coastline, stopping at several picturesque beach towns, including Yelapa. The nearby town of Chimo has roads and cars but is a 45 walk down the coast.

This eco-friendly palapa runs on solar power for the lights and fridge and has outlets to charge phones and laptops. We have running water from a mountain spring, and propane kitchen range and water heater for hot showers. Most visitors are able to get internet via cell service but it can be unreliable depending on the day and your service provider so it is good to plan on being "unplugged".

The palapa sleeps four comfortably (king bed plus loft) and larger groups can be accommodated if the couches and daybeds are utilized.

The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, glasses and utensils. Dining area with hand-hewn table/chairs with seating for four or more. Full bathroom with hot shower, sink, flush toilet.

What is there to do in Chonchos? Nothing or everything depending on your mood! Kayaking, fishing, sunbathing on one of two beaches, swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, hiking, whale watching, bird watching, day trip to Yelapa or just take a nap in the hammock!

Los Chonchos is truly an "off the grid" experience. There is no store so you will want to pick up groceries and supplies beforehand in Puerto Vallarta. There is a restaurant available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that can be arranged ahead of time. Just let Chef Alphonso know what your preferences are! Or order your meal to be delivered to your palapa. Fresh local fish; guacamole made from avocados just picked from the tree!

Chimo is a small town, a 45 minutes hike down the coast, where you can get basic groceries, beer, and tequila. It makes a great half-day trip as there are two fantastic restaurants catering to travelers, serving fresh caught seafood and ice cold beers.

The water taxi leaves from Boca de Tomatlan at 9:30am and 3:30pm. Many visitors spend a night in Puerto Vallarta before and/or after their trip depending on their flight timing.

Los Chonchos is a very special place but may not be perfect for every traveler. There are no medical facilities onsite. There is also no boat dock so the water taxi is a "wet feet" drop-off/pickup that may be difficult for those with mobility issues.

Our little slice of paradise is a hidden gem for those looking for a truly unforgettable escape. We look forward to sharing it with you!

We have recently taken ownership of this special place after visiting. For previous guest experiences (incuding ours!) please see the old listing here: https://www.vrbo.com/684037

One of a kind bliss
This was one of those rare VRBO experiences that is truly one of a kind - between the magic of this little palapa village’s unique private location perched on the coastline, to the palapa itself and its utterly epic, breathtaking views (inc whales, daily!) to the private beach with no one but you on it...it felt barefoot luxury even with everything being eco (solar). Casa Cactus is an unplug and rejuvenate kind of place that is equally charming as it is calming. There was decent wifi but you won’t want to touch your phone while there, you’re that relaxed. We cannot wait to come back. Also weather was divine, waves were on the calm side, and no bugs. And the village (20 min walk) has an authentic and great seafood restaurant and decent groceries. There’s a local guy to get fresh catch from also so you’re covered. And the other palapa owners and onsite staff are so sweet and helpful should you need anything.

Spectacular ocean views
The place is amazing. I thought about not writing a review because in a way I thing this place should be kept a secret. The palapa is beautiful, with spectacular ocean views. We could see the whales passing by all day long. The Palapa belongs to an ecological reserve with more palapas next to 2 beautiful beaches. The place is in the jungle so it is definitely not for everyone. If you are an explorer and true adventurer you can enjoy this place A LOT but if you are not a camping person or you like to have always services and common amenities this might not be for you. Since it is in a very remote location and in the jungle you have to go with an open mind and if something stops working just don't let it get to you, you are still in a beautiful place. During our stay it rained a lot, the ocean was very rough, and did not have a lot of sun but we found it beautiful anyways. We had a few issues with things that weren't properly working at the palapa (the fridge, the wifi, or running water) but the owners where very formal and they looked for a way of solving them. Also the staff at Chonchos helped us fixing what was on their hands. I really appreciate the owners response. Getting in and out of Chonchos can be an adventure since you depend on the ocean. For us it was very rough with huge waves, some of us decided to swim from the boat to the beach and some other guests had to go to Chimo and hike to Chonchos (beautiful hike btw but if you bring a lot of things, then you will need to hire a mula so pack light). The palapa has a lot of utensils to cook and make your own meals. They have solar power that makes the fridge work and lights at night but think of it as a place with no electricity when you plan your trip. Also, bring warm clothes for the night because the place is open to the jungle and it can get chilly. I love this place in the world and will come back on every opportunity that I can. Thank you for sharing it with more people!
