Rue des Fontaines is a delightful 3 storey house lying in the mediaeval heart of a lively gardoise village. This beautifully decorated home boasts a Summer kitchen with a large second living area making alfresco eating both easy and so typically French. The adjoining courtyard has a bassin (small pool),where one can keep cool and enjoy a glass of champagne when the children are asleep from the exhaustion of the beach or from exploring the many hills which surround the home.

Calvisson itself is a buzz with local shops, cafes, restaurants, a local wine caveau, a new wine museum and a museum of boutis which is Provençal quilting. Sunday morning is a time when friends meet at the local market and enjoy a coffee or, more often, a glass of wine after buying locally produced fruit, vegetables, olives, cheeses, bread, fish or meat.

This is the second of our French houses and is adjacent to the house on Rue Baratier. There is a common lockable garden gate joining the courtyards, making it ideal for a large family to stay together or two families who wish to holiday together yet still retain their privacy. This house can also be rented totally independent as can Rue Baratier. Calvisson is situated between Nimes and Montpellier, it could be said that it is an exceptional site, in the countryside yet close to both mountains and the sea; a village which at the same time displays elements of beauty from its past, yet is functional; with a festive ambiance yet relaxing and with all the amenities to cater for all ages.

Within a short walk of the mediaeval heart of the village there are a number of small cafés and restaurants, a supermarket and tabac, bakers, a butcher, greengrocers, a patisserie, flower shops and hairdressers and beauty salons! There is also a delightful Sunday morning market which takes place in the main village square throughout the year and attracts people from all the surrounding villages to come to either stock up on the wonderful local produce or simply to collect and catch up on their news over morning coffee in the local cafés.

For the more sporty there are outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor public swimming pool and cycle hire facilities.

The village itself has a variety of attractions amongst which is the Maison de Boutis which has a permanent exhibition of pieces of work by the masters of the traditional 'boutis' (embroidered objects) from the 18th and 19th centuries; a visit to the Caveau (wine cave) which produces an excellent AOC Coteaux de Languedoc, wines of the Pays d'Oc and a Cartegène; and a walk up the hill to the site of 'Les Trois Moulins' reveals uninterrupted views over the plains of the Vaunage.

Around and about however is a list of attractions which could fall out of the pages of a glossy tourist magazine. Not to mention its close proximity to the cosmopolitan town of Montpellier and the Roman town of Nimes, within an hour in all directions are such delights as the magnificent once Papal City of Avignon; the lovely Duchy Town of Uzès with its honey-coloured stone buildings and its famous Saturday morning market; the majestic 2000 year old Pont du Gard, one of the most visited tourist sites in France; Arles, the celebrated Provençal town with its artistic connections to Van Gogh and Gaugin; and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, home of the exceptional Cotes du Rhone wine.

A brief history of the village.

Much can be said about the village of Calvisson, a lively, active place situated in the Mediterranean basin, very close to the important Roman town of Nimes. In Calvisson itself there are a number of ancient relics which belie its importance as a gallo-roman habitat dating back to the 2nd Century BC - indeed just on the periphery of the village is the Roman road linking Nimes to Sommières.

Nowadays the village of Calvisson is dotted with buildings and monuments, each in turn with a tale to tell about this historic and mediaeval village. The windmill at the top of the hill, transformed into a mausoleum after the religious wars of the 16th Century and the Church of Saint Saturnin, mentioned in archives dating back to 1016 and although much changed, still bear witness to curious passers-by.

Les Halles (originally a market place) and Le Mairie (the Town Hall), constructed in the 19TH Century are in relative terms fairly contemporary buildings, but all sit together to form the complex blend which makes up this active village.
