About the property

1 double & 1 single bedroom, 1 futon, 1 bathroom with shower, full kitchen

Enjoy accessible seclusion in a cottage with a beautiful Maskell's Harbour view and a small boat beaching area. Launch your kayak or canoe in the creek below the road and make your way through the alders into the salt marsh and then on into the harbour. There are good hiking/ cross country skiing trails up the hill behind the cottage. Maskell's Harbour is on the Gillis Point - Washabuck Road five miles east of Iona and the Highland Village and about an hour's drive from Baddeck, Sydney or Port Hawkesbury. The cottage is recently renovated, comfortable and full of natural light.

Off grid adventure

  • 4 of 5

We have visited Nova Scotia a few times and this year came specifically for the colours, both natural and Celtic festival. We were nicely placed in the cottage to reach Iona, Sydney and Baddeck. We were travelling as 4 adults and found this the maximum that felt comfortable in the cottage. We were advised at booking that we would be off grid. The gas lights add atmosphere but the photovoltaic panel provided enough power to actually run the electric lights if wanted plus the fridge comfortably. The jotel stove kept us warm on cold clear nights and the milky way was spectacular with no light pollution.

We were supplied with plenty of spring water in containers, the tap water is not potable. Overall we had a lovely time.

A couple of very small comments on a slightly negative front. The shower head would be a simple replacement as would a "plug" in the bathroom. Newer looking towels and bedding would give the place a more upmarket feel.

Thank you for letting us stay.

Owner's Response: Sarah, Thank you so much for your review and helpful comments. A replacement shower head and a plug in the bathroom are on order. Fresh towels and bedding would be much more cheerful. So glad you have an enjoyable stay. Diana Russell

Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Cabin was well off active traffic as well as off the grid. This was explained prior to our arrival, and the accommodations were more than adequate for two adults. We had considered having another adult couple with us, and that would have been a strain, but one or two children or teens would have been fine. Master bedroom was great as was the queen sized bed.

Arrangements and supplies could not have been better.

Ersatzunterkunft wegen Unwetter

  • 4 of 5
