This is a three-bedroom log-built house set in woodland on the outskirts of the historic village of Kirkmichael, in the vale of Strathardle in the hills between Pitlochry and Blairgowrie.

It has a large kitchen/dining/living area with a well-stocked kitchen with oven/hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge & freezer and washing machine (plus a tumble dryer in the en-suite bathroom).

The living room includes ample seating around an open log fire, a TV with Free-sat channels and DVD/Blu-Ray player, plus CD player. There are books, games & DVDs on the shelves, so help yourself, and pictures and other personal touches to give it a sense of home. And the whole looks out through large french windows onto a paved patio, the fire pit with its log stools, and the open woodland beyond.

There are three bedrooms: a spacious master bedroom with a super-king bed (which can be detached to make two singles), a living flame fire for extra mood, and an en-suite bathroom (with under floor heating for your comfort); a twin room; and a bunk-bed room with additional pull-out bed (all full single-sized), plus further games & toys for the children. All have generous cupboard/hanging space.

There is an additional shower-bathroom off the main corridor.

Outside there is a large gravel driveway and car port with ample parking space (and more nearby). There is a paved patio area with a large picnic table, an outdoor fire pit, and also a small children's play house.

It's set in a 4.4 acre site with a mix of grass, rocks, trees and shrubs running down to a stream, shading over into a large area of open woods and moorland around.

About the Owner

I lived with my family in Glasgow for 13 years. Work brought us up to Scotland - we worked at the University in Glasgow - and work took us away again - we're now a long way away down on the North Kent coast. We would happily have stayed for this place if we could.

We loved Glasgow; we loved living in Scotland, not least the Highlands, and wanted, if we could, to get a place up here, and finally we got the chance.

We bought this place as a retreat from the working week, an adventure for our young son, and a place to host our friends and their kids. Once we'd got it, we wished we'd had it years earlier and could keep it for years after. It's the kind of place families will spend every Christmas and every Summer holiday: which is exactly what the previous owners did, and many of the neighboring families do as well.

Sadly, we had to move away but we're trying to keep it as a special place for us and we hope you can see that when you visit. Our son still loves his log house, and friends who've visited know why we love it so much, and I hope you can see why.

Brilliant getaway lodge

We stayed at the lodge in early spring for a long weekend, initially attracted by the flexible dates and good price for a larger group. But we were very surprised at how lovely the cabin is; very spacious, stylish furnishing and all the ambiance that a real log cabin gives.

The cabin is based on a shared site, but there's loads of space and trees between each cabin that you would only see another one if you go on a walk through the woods (even then, they are far away). Walks to the local village with a great pub and the end of the road (just outside the village but keep walking around the corner) and the village also links into wider walks across the hills near Pitlochry. We are hoping to come up again soon with our young family - the garden area would be perfect for them to play in. It's also very near Glenshee, so we might look into this next time we plan some skiing!

Peaceful & calm, great central location

The house was very spacious, clean and in a very quiet and peaceful setting.

Very close to the Cairngorms and ideal location to visit the central Highlands. Nearby there was lots to visit, like the lovely town of Pitlochry and Dunkeld. Lots of trails nearby and in the region, we wished we had had time to do them all!

We very much enjoyed our stay and would consider staying there again.

Owner's Response: This highlights the advantages of the location: it's a good base for a large swathe of the highlands as well as Tayside and the lowland areas to the south (even, longer day trips to Edinburgh and Glasgow are not out of the question). Plenty for a busy week and quite enough for longer.

peaceful place

I stayed here with my mum, dad ,partner and two children. The cabin has the wow factor for sure, thats the first word my partner said when he walked in, its got everything you need, plenty of space (although just that little bit more food storage space would be good), i love the smell you get as you walk in of the woodburner although we never needed to use it , the surroundings are beautiful and peaceful just what we wanted, for once i could actually let the kids run around without worrying too much about them because hardly any traffic maybe the odd car, there are nice walks up the hill ,there is a nice walk down to the village and nice friendly people at the village shop, it stocks quite alot of things that you wouldn't expect, there is a walk alongside the river from the village and paths that take you on the cateran trail. Good places to walk are the hermitage, killiecrankie and craigvinean forest, beautiful scenery, overall we had a lovely holiday at the cabin and would do it again .

Fabulous escape!

This is such an incredible setting for an escape or getaway. It is a very generous size and the 8 of us couldn't have been more comfortable.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Actually, that doesn’t even cover it. We had such an amazing time there. All of us benefiting greatly from no wifi and no phone signal. It was what we all needed.

The open fire, bbq area, outside table, huge living and kitchen area and spacious bedrooms just added to our great weekend!

I would highly recommend this to any group of friends who need a great time away!!!

Owner's Response: Yes, a lot of people comment on that: the sense of escape you get when you're at the house. Even though places to drink, eat and the village shop are actually close enough by, you feel away from it. You can get mobile signal depending on network and where you stand in the house, or just pop outside or up to the Log Cabin Hotel and you should be fine. We haven't yet got wifi; when we lived in Glasgow and went up there all the time, we never even had a telly, but that's a bit too much for many people. But you do get the sense of escape...

Wonderful family holiday at Glen Derby

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the log house – what a beautiful setting with a welcoming, homely atmosphere. It was our first holiday with our 8 month old baby and the log house had everything we needed for him (high chair, travel cot etc.) which in turn made our stay really relaxed. He saw his first deer – just in front of the patio!

This was an ideal place for our family holiday but we can also imagine it would adapt perfectly to larger groups too – the log house itself is spacious and it has great facilities out on the patio with the fire pit and big picnic table. The log burner in the front room is another excellent feature for days when perhaps the sun isn’t at its best. You’ll also be hard pushed to find a more thorough and witty information booklet than the one you’ll use during your stay!

The owner has taken great care to ensure that interior of their home retains its log cabin character and it was a pleasure to stay here – now we just need an excuse to come back.

Beautiful house, beautiful surroundings :)

The property impressed from the moment we arrived! The house was homely and kept very clean and comfortable. There were 10 of us (all aged between 20-23) and we still had plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably. The log fire was a fantastic addition to the cabin and kept us all very cosy :) I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone who was willing to show it the respect it deserved :)

Owner's Response: Thanks indeed. As in other reviews, it's nice to hear the cleanliness getting a mention: I'll pass this on to the house keeper who makes it her labour of love. The homeliness too is good to hear: nice to know the house has got that character as well; not a completely de-personalised self-catering facility. And I like the last line 'show it the respect it deserves'. It's always a little nerve-wracking to rent out your 'home', especially to larger parties, but these (and nearly all) visitors have respected it, and that's appreciated.

Location

From the Owner

As soon as we saw the log walls and turf roof (beginning of May, 2011) we wanted the place. Visiting it (and the lovely drive over the pass from Pitlochry, and passing through the village, and lunching in the Log Cabin Hotel nearby) clinched it. For us it was a whole combination of things: it's accessible but still secluded; the area is historic but not twee; you get the convenience of a holiday 'site' while still feeling you've got away from other people; the country around is beautiful but not bleak; being on the East side of Scotland the weather is dryer; and you can easily get to other places around about, so you won't exhaust the possibilities in one stay.

As a place to stay, from a weekend’s skiing or walking to a family summer holiday, it couldn’t be better located.

It’s accessible: 20 mins from Pitlochry/A9; 50 mins Perth; 1.5hrs from Edinburgh, 30mins more to Glasgow

It’s scenic: it lies in the beautiful and historic vale of Strathardle which is peppered with prehistoric remains—there’s the ruins of a castle visible across the valley, the remains of old farms and field systems can be seen when you walk up Glen Derby into the forest and heather moorlands beyond; the 60 mile (100 km) Cateran Trail runs along the valley (you can join it 10 mins. down the hill from the house); the peaks of the Grampian Highlands are visible around (with snow on in season), and Glen Shee with its walking and skiing are a short drive away (or the hills of Central Highlands a drive in the opposite direction), Braemar and southern approaches to the Cairngorms a lovely drive beyond that. Picturesque & historic towns abound in the area—Pitlochry, Blairgowrie, Dunkeld and Perth to name a few—plus other scenic & historic sites around those.

It’s convenient: the Log Cabin Hotel is close by for drinks and a bite to eat (and for booking adventure sports); the village of Kirkmichael is just down the hill with another pub and a restaurant and a great little shop; and you’re just 20 mins. in either direction from Pitlochry or Blairgowrie for more services, so you don’t have to plan your holiday around long journeys to resupply with food & drink—it’s all on your doorstep.

And it’s secluded: nights can be soundless (we’ve never slept better), and you’ll see deer, grouse and red squirrel (yes, they’re still around here) and much more in the woodland and moorland around.

Oh, and the weather: the beauty of the eastern Highlands is the same remote hills and mountains, but also... less rain (and in the right season, more snow), and in Summer, fewer midges. We like the East! And in fairness, it's a different kind of landscape as well: if you know the western Highlands (beautiful to be sure) try the eastern hills as well; a quite different character. Walking is generally firmer under foot but the hills just as remote and quiet.

Drive over the pass from Pitlochry or up the valley from Blairgowrie; drive into the village, over the river, up the hill and into the woods and park up at the house. Stop: listen. It's so quiet. At night it's truly dark. You go in and you smell the wood and the background smoke from the log fire in the living room, which of course you light... During the day you may see a red squirrel in the trees outside (yes they still have red squirrel here), or deer walking past the back window. And the next day you've slept in because it's so quiet. And after breakfast - maybe in good weather you've already opened up the patio door and sat outside - you walk down to the village to stock up on a few things, and the view when you walk down is a tonic in itself.
