Le Manoir de Canet d'Aude is a fully recently renovated and imposing Belle Epoque Maison de Maitre - 'Master's House of the Beautiful Era'

It was originally built in the 1830's, as a show of influence by one of the wealthiest farmers, landowners and Wine and Brandy producers - For many years later in its life it was home to the family of the Mayor of Narbonne.

*Le Manoir is the major part of a large former wine estate with a sister property called The Old Winery Canet that can sleep a further 8 people.

It is positioned rurally, on the edge of a Thriving Village, while still being close to all essential services and the Cathedral City of Narbonne, with its choice of High Quality Sandy Beaches.

To the rear it has a Large Shady Garden and a Large New Pool (With child's security barrier) and Sun Terrace.

It was Completely Renovated in early 2013, and retains all its Original Character and Patina but functions perfectly as a modern and practical property should.

There are 550 sq. meters of Flexible Air Conditioned* Accommodation, which would suit larger groups or 1-4 Families perfectly.......Or you could simply indulge yourself and further relax in all the space and grandeur with just a handful of close friends.

The house sits securely behind magnificent cast iron gates, with an imposing façade of golden quarried sandstone, as is the grand curved staircase and balustrade that rises to the front architectural balcony and terrace.

This terrace overlooks a Walled Courtyard and large gravelled Entertaining / BBQ Space, furnished with bright contemporary coloured Traditional French Cafe Style Tables and Chairs.

Heavy Full Height Wooden Doors open to the Main Entrance Hall, with it's marble staircase and walls still rendered in the Original 1830's Hand Painted Trompe-l'oeil, giving an aged marble effect.

Either side of the Hall are Double Doors that open into Two Large Comfortable Rooms (Salon and Dining Room), each with High Ceilings complete with Ornate Mouldings, Chandeliers and Marble Fireplaces - This gives you a clear choice of two areas to sit and relax, perhaps for young and old or whatever suits the mood best.

BOSE Sound Doc & Full Wifi access is available from this point all over the house.

The Main Hub of the Manor is the newly re fitted Dinning Room and fully equipped French Period Country Style Kitchen below - Then through the two double height French Doors you can access the outside again for Al Fresco Dinning - Multiple tables have been provided, that can be moved and joined together for 'Dining Under The Stars', on the Terraces, Front Courtyard or Huge Garden to the rear of the property.

From the front balcony you have views over the New Pool, Sun Terrace, Park Garden with its Shallow Brook and numerous Mature Shady Fruit Trees.

On the First Floor there are Four Well Proportioned Luxury Bedroom Suites, all with Double Beds, that can be easily be split into Two Single's - Each room has a En Suite with Hans Grohe Power Rain Shower and Double Sinks space permitting.

There are also Two Daybeds, that can be popped up and placed within the largest room suites for younger children + There are 2 Portable Cots and 2 High Chairs for Babies.

Well selected Farrow and Ball Paints and Osborne & Little Wall Papers have been used throughout to complete the French Contemporary Classic feel.

On the Third Top Floor there are Three Further Bedrooms and a large shared Family size WC, Shower Room with Double Sinks - One of the Bedrooms is arranged as a Non Splittable Double, the next a Splittable Double and the final one as a Two / Three Bed Dormitory.

On the Lower Ground Floor we have a recently refitted Contemporary Classic French Kitchen with Satellite TV and access to the outside front courtyard, next door is the Well Stocked 'Honesty Wine Cellar' / Utility Room with Washing Machine & Drying Facilities.

Next door to the Kitchen is 'The Games Room' - With a Full Size Quality Pool Table, Bar Style Table Foot Ball and Full Size Ping Pong Table - Yippie !

The House enjoys a position set East to West, with a large Park Land Garden - Part is laid to a Large Park Garden, planted with Mature Fruit Trees including: Figs, Olives, Cherries, Apples and Walnuts later in the year.

A shallow Brook carries all kinds of small fish through the back garden, giving opportunities for a Line and Hook or a Bucket for the younger amongst us.

There are many further on site activities including sheltered Private Areas to read a good book - Or just chill out in the Hammock or on one of the various Terraces - Perhaps take a Sun bed and find some shade in the Garden - Why go out and be a tourist...?

There is also plenty of Car Parking across the road.

We previously lived in the South of England, where it was easy to take The Tunnel or Ferry for day trips....Or the yearly Holiday further into France or beyond...But the trips were never long enough......

- The opportunity arose to make the move permanently and so we took it !

We bought the Le Manoir de Canet d'Aude early in 2013 - It is a stunning example of a Belle Epoque Mansion of 550+ square meters in size.

With my wife being an Interior Designer and myself as self appointed Project Manager, we have thoroughly enjoyed a year sympathetically renovating it back to it's former glory.

This has included completely renovating and redecorating it and the addition of 6 high quality luxury en suite Shower Rooms and one Large Family Bathroom / Shower Room, all with Marble Tiles and Hans Grohe fittings.

We used all quality materials including Farrow and Ball Paints and Osborne and Little Wallpapers to gain the right quality feel.

Stunning Mansion for big groups near Narbonne

Spent 2 wonderful weeks here with friends and family for my 60th birthday. Le Manoir and the Old Winery are two beautiful properties, lovingly and tastefully restored. We loved every minute – from the bright, airy rooms and crisp white linens to the pool and the lush gardens of fruit and flowers.

The first week we spread ourselves between both properties. The 2 houses work really well together with a simple connecting door between the Old Winery kitchen and the hallway of Le Manoir. The second week was a family group in Le Manoir only.

Melanie and Jay are such helpful and welcoming hosts. Local provisions awaited us on arrival – bread, wine, jam to get you started – and there is an honour system for buying the local wine in the cellar. Nothing is too much trouble and they go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Cots, high chairs and children’s toys are available. (NB the rooms vary considerably in size and amenities so I recommend consulting with Melanie and Jay prior to your arrival)

Consider Sharon Slaughter for in-house catering – she catered my birthday banquet and it was superb. She and her team also do a great job to make sure the house is clean and prepared for your arrival.

Canet is such a great location, just steps from the Canal du Midi and only a short drive to the coast, Carcassonne and Narbonne. It has a good pizza restaurant (we only used it for takeaways), an OK bar, a bakery and a small but well stocked supermarket. Ventenac is just down the road with 2 restaurants and the local wine cooperative.

Thank you Melanie and Jay - you really add the extra touch and make everything more special and we hope to return one day.

Perfect place for a holiday

Our stay in Le Manoir was fantastic. What a beautiful house with all the facilities you need to have a great holiday. The owners were attentive and helpful. Thank you Melanie and Jay. We loved the village, Canet d'Aude, which is in a great location for going out each day sightseeing. There is so much to see and do. The house itself was comfortable, clean and with beautiful decor. The garden and pool were a delight for the children and adults alike. We had a wonderful holiday and look forward to coming again.

Wonderful Time

Stayed with my family in July and had an excellent time.The property is an elegant Maison de Maitre with spacious, comfortable accommodation in an beautiful area of southern France. Truly excellent facilities, will definitely return but next time for two weeks!

Nice Chateau but Read to Avoid Surprises!

Disclaimer--as a very small part of my restaurant ownership I take people to wine country annually for a small profit. We are accustomed to staying in nice places complete with cooks, maid service, etc. This Chateau has a lot of charm and the couple who own it are working hard to make it a success, albeit, I believe they are accustomed to hosting families on vacation--not typically more sophisticated travelers who require a bit more comfort.

1. Impressive place, great renovation, nice dining room and courtyard. When we needed something the owners were timely & attentive.

2. Note this manor is located directly ON the street IN the town of Canet d'Aude. If you are sleeping with your windows open, you will hear cars running into the late evening and certainly beginning again prior to sunrise.

3. Pool pics online don't accurately show an unsightly child-proof barrier erected around the pool.

4. Your are provided 2 rolls of toilet paper / guest room. Just know that going in so there are no surprises if you are looking for that 3rd roll!

5. The air conditioning is broken so the package is not available--even if you are willing to pay a large weekly sum for it. During our stay, the weather was warmer than usual, and our guests staying on the 3rd floor were unable to properly open their windows. They were quite uncomfortable and hence quite unhappy.

6. They state in the agreement you will need to hand over a cash deposit the day of check-in. Instead, I suggest you pay for this in advance via wire transfer--and use HiFX for wiring as any other service may charge Le Manoir more fees. We found by using another wiring service that when their bank charged them additional fees, they insisted that we pay! Perhaps just a cultural shift. In the U.S., the vendor pays all customer transaction fees (usually from a credit card) as we believe it is privilege to do business with the customer, not the other way around.

In summary, as mentioned in the disclaimer, this is a nice summer place for families with children on holiday or a family reunion, etc. More seasoned travelers may have needs which may not be addressable at this level of rental.

Owner's Response: Owner's Response: Firstly let me thank you for your rating of 4 out of 5 stars. We live on a country lane in a rural and thriving Village , surrounded by fields of grapevines. Unfortunately during the period that you stayed, the grape harvests were underway, so apologies for any additional noise that caused. This is wine country. The weather that week was wonderfully hot, which is mainly the reason why people visit us here in the South of France . Regarding the "unsightly child proof barrier", under French Law we are obliged to supply child proof security. For parties with no children this can be quickly and easily removed. Le Manoir is a "Self-Catering Property" as are all others on Homeaway, we are not a hotel. This means that we provide enough consumables, like toilet paper to cover you for the first two or three days. Le Manoir is one of the very few properties of its size within the Languedoc that even has an additional air-conditioning package available. Each bedroom is equipped with a fan as standard and it would be up to, in this case the tour operator to ask for the air-conditioning package, as it is available at an additional cost. We simply don't believe in charging guests to use expensive facilities that they may not need at either end of the season. Due to the extreme heat that week, additional fans were provided immediately for the comfort of the guests on the top floor. For the ease of the traveller, under Homeaways new system they now take all payments directly from the traveller. Deposit, balance and bond.

Amazing beautiful Thank you !

This is a genuinely beautiful place of luxury in a gorgeous quiet sleepy village. The house is charming and well equipped with all the modern day facilities that you didn't even know you needed. 5 star bedrooms with lovely ensuites and huge comfy beds. The hosts were great and nothing was too much trouble. For a group of friends or families with discerning taste wishing to holiday together, then this is ideal.

Extremely stylish as well as welcoming

Our stay was enchanting from the moment we arrived. Mel and Jay were very attentive hosts and have done everything possible to ensure we had a wonderful holiday. The manoir has been skilfully transformed to create an impressive home that both respects the period details and provides contemporary, comfortable and beautifully furnished spaces. It is very well equipped, very clean and the owners have ensured that the facilities enabled us to feel very much at home. The lovely garden and generous pool contribute to the sense of peace which extends to the surrounding countryside and villages that fulfil classic images of French rural life. The Canal du Midi, with some very good restaurants, is very close and the towns of Narbonne and Caracasonne within very easy reach, as are the snow topped Pyrenees. It has been a wonderful, restorative break in a fabulous house that will draw us back many times and which we would wholeheartedly recommend.

It is a Spacious House with Flexible Accommodation, enjoying a position set East to West within 3 Hectares of Park Land - Part is laid to a Large Private Garden, planted with mature Fruit Trees including Figs, Olives, Cherries, Apples....with Walnuts later in the year.....The remainder flows into open Farmland with acres....and acres of Vineyards for endless Bike Riding and Country Walks - To complete the picture, a shallow Fish Bearing Brook runs through the garden, further adding to the tranquility.

There are various on site activities.....Most important is our Brand New 10m x 4m Swimming Pool with Sun Terrace and Full Childs Security Fence - Why not be the first to use it !

It is surrounded by many Shaded Peaceful Corners for Reading - We have a well stocked library of French and English Books with titles both Classic and New (Our oldest book is from the 1870's). Or perhaps just Sunbathing while listening to Music but above all Chilling Out.

Wine Tastings and Cooking Lessons in the Main Kitchen by an accredited Teacher.

Dinner Parties can be Fully Catered, if you fancy a whole evening off @ approx. 30 Euros per person (Wines additional, sadly).

We can organise a 'BBQ with Unlimited Vin De Table', followed by an Old French Film in the Courtyard at very reasonable cost per head - Again please let us know in advance and we can gear up for this.

* It is possible to arrange for your own selection of local wines to be pre stocked ready for your arrival (Please contact the owner in advance for the full list) - Perhaps a better idea than the usual 'Welcome Pack Dodgy Plonk' - Remember standard table wine here can be as little as only £1 a litre ! - It's cheaper than Water, which is reason enough to come and stay, think of the money you will save !

After all that, should you need to go out.....

Canet itself, is a highly regarded and thriving village that still retains a Mini Supermarket, Bakers, Butcher, Chemists, Tabac and Bar, amongst other businesses.

Being just 5 minutes from the Canal du Midi with its Views, Walks and Restaurants and only 15 minutes to the rear of The Cathedral City of Narbonne with it's choice of Sunny Sandy Beaches - The Sun Shines an average of 300+ days a year!, with Temperatures in the mid thirties in high Summer.

Taxi Company details for 'Non Sober Evenings' out are provided in the House Notes or just walk into the Village and wobble back.

Further Places of Interest / Suggested days out :

Top of the list is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Carcassonne which is just 40 minutes away - Great for a day trip but I feel a bit sorry for those who rent up there putting themselves further away from the Beaches, which you will want to visit far more regularly.

The City of Narbonne with its Cathedral, Shopping, Nightlife, Bars and Delicious Restaurants.

We have a Lake with all facilities nearby, for when the Beaches are too windy. This is at Homps where many of the Canal Boats can be hired from.

Cathar Country has more Castles and Churches than days of your holiday.

The Sigean Game Reserve - The largest outside of Africa at 700 Acres, near Porte-Nouvelle.

Le Abbaye de Fontfroide - Great Restaurant & Classical Music Venue.

The small and idyllic Villages of Minerve and Lagrasse have great charm.

Further afield the Beautiful Town of Pezenas, in the Herault Valley - With it's Saturday Flower Market and for being the home of French Writer Moliere.

Our personal favourite The Port of Collioure close by.

Each Bedroom is finished to a very high standard in the Period French Decorative Style with Many Original Features including Chandeliers, Tiled Floors and Marble Fireplaces. All but one of the Bedrooms have a Quality Large Double Bed, that can be Split Into Two Singles (By prior arrangement due to the different linen needed) - *Bedroom 5 has an un splittable Large Double. 2 Additional Single Relocatable Pop Up Beds & Cots available. Side Tables / Lamps / Fan. Electrical Charging Points. Iron & Ironing Board available. Quality Linen & Towels provided (Pool and Shower Towels). Hair Dryers available. *Bedroom Seven will be relocated by Summer 2016, from the Raised Ground Floor to the Third Floor, due to the ongoing refurbishment of this 200 year old Property.
