L'Orangerie, is a magnificent, restored stone residence which lies in the medieval centre of the lively village of Calvisson at the heart of the Vaunage. Situated between the vibrant cosmopolitan towns of Nimes and Montpellier, Calvisson lies surrounded by vineyards, beautiful countryside and stunning scenery to the north and the vast sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coastline and the Camargue to the south. The village itself with all amenities is buzzing with people going about their everyday lives and there is the added treat of the busy market selling local produce, flowers and artisanal products, which takes place in the village square every Sunday morning.

L'Orangerie has been sympathetically rebuilt and restored around a magnificent central arch, a theme which is also reflected in three stunning windows in the living area and throughout the house.

The large outdoor terrace with pool provide a perfect oasis in which to relax and unwind in the heart of this lively village.

A playground of both culture and fun: From the Mont Aigoual, the highest point in the Cevennes, to the fine sands of the Mediterranean, without forgetting the famous Pont du Gard, the Gard offers a wide range of breathtaking sites and a varied and beautiful choice of heritage. Lush green forests, areas of wild garrigue and beautiful coastline have made this area, witness to 2,000 years of history and one of the main birthplaces of Roman civilisation, a stunning mosaic of the warm and dazzling sunlight of the Midi.

To list all the activities and attractions available to the visitor would take volumes. Suffice to say that whether you are looking for leisurely family entertainment which can be found lazing the day away on the long sandy beaches or in one of the numerous fun parks such as La Bouscarrasse or Espace Grand Bleu Water Parks near Uzès and La Grande Motte, or if you are more inclined to delve into the area’s rich cultural background, there is something to be found.

Gastronomic delights and endless wine tasting: A visit to the region would not be complete without visiting one of the many markets where pallets of local produce are displayed in glorious multicolour with aromas to entice, whilst the numerous fabulous restaurants also make use of the many Specialities of the Region on their menus such as:The Picholine Olive; Uzès Honey;The 'Pelardon' is the traditional goat's cheese of the Cevennes; The Uzège Truffle; Asparagus; Figs; Chestnuts; Camargue Rice; Shellfish. Dishes such as 'Boeuf à la Gardianne' and 'Brandade du Morue' should be tried and savoured!

Wine: Being a part of the largest wine producing region in France means that there is a wealth of expertise to be drawn on. Visit the numerous 'caves cooperatives' and private cellars and taste the various appellations such as St Gervais, Chusclan, Laudun, Pic St Loup and Regional Côtes du Rhône, Costières de Nimes and Tavel Rosé

From sports enthusiast to culture vulture: Both the climate and the landscape lend themselves to an outdoor lifestyle in this part of the South France. With the sea, rivers, mountains and endless rolling countryside never more than a short drive away and consistent sunshine throughout the spring and summer months, it is like a playground for the outdoor enthusiast. Enjoy activities such as: cycling and mountain biking, walking and hiking, horse riding and pony trekking, water based activities such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and canoeing; climbing and caving, golf, fishing, skiing and snow sports and airborne activities such as parachuting, ballooning and micro lighting.

Our nearest city is Nimes, a 20 min drive away, or 30 mins on the bus. Nimes is a thriving cosmopolitan city with chic, modern shops, restaurants and and galleries. It's pedestrianised centre is fascinating to wander round, with Roman and mediaeval architecture round every corner. It's Roman Ampitheatre (L'Arenes) is one of the most intact and impressive in Europe and is still used for sporting events and concerts. Nimes is also host to one of the best preserved Roman Temples in the world, right in the heart of the shopping centre. Just a few hundred yards from the shops is Nimes Jardin de Fontaines and overlooking this is the Roman Tour Magna with its magnificent panoramic views over the whole city and the surrounding region.

We are two families from Cheshire in the UK and we own and use L'Orangerie between us. We all enjoy walking, relaxing in the sun, exploring historic villages, good food and good wine. Where better to enjoy it than in the South of France! We have been renting out L'Orangerie (with rave reviews) for 2 years, using a property agency belonging to friends. Because the agency has now stopped its rental business we are renting out the property directly ourselves. Please talk to us. We would love you to enjoy it, as we do.

We've had a lovely 2weeks here. the home has been perfect for relaxing in and around the pool. We enjoyed making trips out to the surrounding area in which there is plenty to see and do.

In Calvisson itself we have enjoyed the Sunday market, The Creperie and also Friday  Jazz at Les Halles

Beautiful property in delightful village

We had a wonderful stay at L'Orangerie, Calvisson is the ideal location for a sleepy stay in France.

The house is well equipped with a lovely pool for boiling days. An ideal base for exploring the area.

The village has several places to eat, supermarket, bakers and a wonderful Sunday market.

Thoroughly recommend.

Beautiful house

Beautiful house in the pretty village of Calvisson. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The pool on the terrace was wonderful to come home to on a hot day. We found the water temperature to be perfect. The village has a small supermarket, bakery, restaurants etc all within walking distance. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to return. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous place to stay - comfortable and relaxed environment. Even the neighbours welcomed us! A lovely town and great location for day trips to Aigues Mortes, Uzes, Sommieres, Montpellier. Living spaces and outdoor areas were fantastic. The bedrooms were very comfortable, though air circulation in the lower floor could be improved with ceiling fans or evaporative air conditioning. Pool was a good for the brave hearts that can handle cold water!

Fantastic Accomodation in 'Sleepy French Village'

Set in the heart of the working village of Calvission, this amazing apartment is the perfect place to relax and chill after a day of wandering around the local area and cycling through the vineyards. The roof top terrace with pool was an excellent way to cool down and enjoy an early evening aperitif,watching the sunset or just to enjoy an evening meal .

The spacious apartment is furnished exquisitely, stone walls and arched windows give a very cool and bright feel to the main living area.

Bedrooms and en-suites superb! A two minute walk from the main square were there is a bar , restaurant and supermarket. The local bakery is excellent!

There is also pizza van and a market on Sunday.

A car is necessary.

Throughout the process of booking this property the owners were very supportive in providing information and ensuring we made the most of the area to enjoy our holiday.

Simply Gorgeous!

We have rented many holiday properties over the years and this house is definitely one of the best we have stayed in. It has been beautifully restored to a very high standard and has everything you could possibly want in a holiday home.

The booking process was smooth and any questions were answered promptly. The directions to the house were perfect; we didn't get lost and found the property easily. Parking in Calvisson was never a problem, we always found a space close by. Loved the pool, the table tennis table and the visiting pizza van!

A wonderful stay at l'Orangerie

The owners of l’Orangerie were excellent at responding to queries and providing tips before and during our stay. The details of the property were accurate but seeing it first hand is the only way to appreciate how good a property it is.

We stayed at l’Orangerie during May and had a wonderful time. We went for a wedding near Sommières and l’Orangerie was perfect for the pair of us, our son and his fiancée and our daughter. We had driven down to Calvisson and picked the children up from Montpellier airport at different times. L’Orangerie’s three double bedrooms each with its own bathroom/shower room was perfect and avoided any panic as we prepared for the wedding.

Our first week coincided with the Ascension Day public holiday and a lot of Calvisson had taken holidays too. Luckily Laurent, at Le Vaunageol restaurant wasn’t on his holidays and we had two terrific meals there. He has a small menu but prepares all the food himself rather than microwaving pre-cooked meals.

L’Orangerie was an ideal base to visit the local attractions: Nimes, Avignon, the Camargue and the Mediterranean beaches. And after that we could relax on the terrace at the l’Orangerie or in the sumptuous living room. We ate outside on the terrace or at the grand dining table if the mistral was too keen.

Calvisson is a lovely little town with a good walk up to the site of the former chateau and the trois moulins. The roads in the old part are very narrow but luckily they are very quiet.

This was our first visit to the south of France and l’Orangerie helped make it a huge success. We recommend it very highly and hope to return again one day.

Our house is ideally located for the things we enjoy doing on holiday. The rich cultural cities of Nimes and Montpelier are a short drive away to the East and West. The beaches of the Med are only 30 mins drive to the South and if you drive the same distance to the North you are in the wonderful Cevennes foothills. In between is rolling agricultural scenery with dozens of picturesque villages nestling between the vineyards and the hills. Calvisson itself is located in the vale known as Le Vaunage, which stretches from Calvisson to Nimes. Just a few kilometres from us is the town of Sommieres, home for 33 years to the writer Lawrence Durrell. Durrell claimed that he had seen 'nothing prettier' than Sommieres in all his travels. The old Roman bridge that crosses the river is still in use today and forms the centerpiece of Sommieres.

Situated between Nimes and Montpellier, Calvisson is an exceptional site close to both mountains and the sea. Within a short walk of the medieval heart of the village there are a number of small cafés and restaurants, a supermarket and tabac, bakers, a butcher, greengrocers, a patisserie, flower shops and hairdressers and beauty salons and a fabulous wine cave! The lovely Sunday morning market is a big attraction! For the sporty there are tennis courts, an outdoor public swimming pool and cycle hire facilities. Around and about there are attractions within an hour in all directions, such as the magnificent Papal City of Avignon; the lovely Duchy Town of Uzès with its honey-coloured stone buildings and its famous Saturday morning market; the majestic 2000 year old Pont du Gard, one of the most visited tourist sites in France; Arles, the celebrated Provençal town with its artistic connections to Van Gogh and Gaugin; and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, home of the exceptional Cotes du Rhone wine.

When we bought L'Orangerie, it was a ruin, with walls falling down, no floors and roofs open to the skies. We were fortunate to have a very sympathetic builder who shared our vision and has restored L'Orangerie to the luxurious holiday home it is today. All of our visitors have been ecstatic about the house and the area and we love reading their comments. We hope that you will come and enjoy it too.
